2003 SS 3.8 litter motor Chevy Monte Carlo axil nut is not a 35 millimeter. It is a 33 millimeter. 2003 has an ABS sensor wire connection that not shown or mentioned in this video as well.

I’ve done the removal part over the weekend. The job is very straightforward, but that axle nut is something else! It can turn this job from a beginner-intermediate one to an absolute nightmare. If your vehicle happens to be from an area where salt is used during the winter, don’t be surprised if repair shops will pass up on a job like this. Especially if the nut is heavily corroded or rounded off. You absolutely need the proper axle nut socket for this one. Don’t even think about substituting a slightly larger socket!!! The nut is so shallow, that you can easily round it off doing that, and then you’re truly screwed!

To anyone having to do this and are aprehensive about it as I was, it isn't that bad. The hardest thing is getting enough torque to losen the bolts. They should be on there good as your life does depend on it. It is just like the video and I did it in the driveway in full sun and it was hot. Be safe and be proud, you can do it.

I'm replacing the control arm the wheel hub and the cv axel and was wondering if I need to put lubricant if any and what type on certain places on any of the new parts, or any preventive care such as on the wheel hub where it contacts with the tire rim?

So I need new wheel bearings on both the front driver and passenger wheels and I was looking at parts online and saw bearings both with and without abs sensors. Would I need the ones with the abs sensors instead of the ones with out because of the traction control on my 2003 Monte Carlo ss? Price wise there's like a 6 buck difference so it's not too big of a deal I just don't want to order the wrong parts

Thanks for the great video! I had forgotten how easy it is to change one of these. I changed one on my '02 M.C. SS on a dirt driveway about 6 years ago. Now my '04 SS needs one, and I have a paved yard, and way better equipment, so I just needed a 'refresher' before I undertook the job. Thanks again.

I'm in the process of replacing both front wheel hubs on my 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo w/ABS. I got the right hub assembly off by just knocking it with a sledge hammer but I'm having a lot of difficulty with the driver side hub assembly. I read in the service manual that a hub removal tool was suggested but noticed that you didn't use one yourself on top of the ease I had taking off the passenger-side hub assembly. Any suggestions? Great videos btw, especially since they're specific to my my model. You've been a great DIY asset.

You could try some penetrating oil on it too such as PB Blaster. If everything is off that holds the bearing on, it should come off with a 2-3 LBD sledge hammer. We carry new wheal bearing hub assemblies on our website, here's a link to them. www.1aauto.com/2002-chevy-monte-carlo-front-wheel-bearings-and-hubs/y-mo-c/2002-31-66?KZfaq&KZfaq&ATony

I'd just like to check something about the torque of the axle nut because the manual says they are only 118 ft-bs
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 8 жыл бұрын
Well, it's pretty rare that you find an error in the repair manuals, and 118 ft-lbs sounds about right for a sedan. But it wouldn't hurt anything if you wanted to take it up to 140 just to be sure. In previous years they had it spec'd at 159 ft-lbs if that gives you any point of reference. I typically stick to whatever my repair manual specifies though. Good luck! 1aauto.com 866-403-3393

Just curious if you used Timkin bearings or another brand? I've heard that if you don't use Timkin that they won't last as long....What are your thoughts on this please?
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 7 жыл бұрын
We didn't use a Timkin here, we used our own parts. There's no two ways around it, Timkin makes really great parts. In terms of longevity, they're always worth the extra investment. Though our alternatives are also covered under a two year warranty, so if they do wear out early, we'll send you some new ones at no charge. Here's a link to the ones we stock on our site. www.1aauto.com/search?model=31&q=wheel%20bearing&year=2004&abTestingValue=OFF&KZfaq&ATony&CTA%20Comment

I have the same repair coming up, and the process looks fairly straightforward (though doing the job will always have curveballs in store). One question, though. 275ft-lbs for the caliper slide bolts? WTF??? I have no repair manual, but no friggin way those bolts require that kind of torque! Certainly, in the video the gentleman doing the job doesn't appear to be putting anywhere near that amount of torque on the wrench. Quick googling reports anywhere between 70 and 100ft-lbs, which is more reasonable given the grease on the threads...

I can’t get the bolt out that’s holding the hub on, what should i do? I’ve used WD-40 to try and loosen them... help me pleass
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 6 жыл бұрын
+tony stevens Those bolts can be frozen on pretty good depending on the condition. We recommend trying to soak them with penetrating oil like white lithium first. You will have to shock it off by using a hammer like in the video, but if that does not work you may need to use a slide hammer, or use a torch to heat up the bolts. 1aauto.com

You really should retorque the hub nut after 20 miles to ensure proper life out of the bearing. More than once I've had new wheel bearings fail in only a few hundred miles, and my mechanic friend told me it was because I didn't retorque them. Ever since I started doing the way he told me, I have never had a new FWD wheel bearing fail.
