Hey I just wanna say thank you!!. Just finished changing my dad’s front brakes , and the only downside was I broke the screw that holds the driver’s side rotor, so hopefully nothing bad happens lol. Other than that I just followed step by step and made it easy to install. The old man was really happy after the dealership asked him for $500 to do the job.

C- clamp and an old brake pad is the best way to push a piston back in. Vise grips don't apply even pressure on the piston and is a good way to break or damage it

+peter lockwood Thanks for checking us out! You may need to cycle the vehicle by turning it on, seeing the lights and then turning it off, waiting for about 15-20 seconds and then turning it back on. This also may indicate that there is an issue somewhere in the electronics with the braking system. A replacement of pads and rotors should typically not give these types of warning lights.

I have never had the luxury of having a lift as a DIY’er, nor KZfaq to show me how to do the job. I only had a High School Vo-Tech Class, where I thought at one time that I had only learned 1 thing in the 2 year program, which was “Not to be an Auto Mechanic”! I was wrong after saving $1,000’s over time. Ok, I love to see a Female in the business, which I believe brings an empathy towards the customer which is invaluable, after it took me 20 years to find an honest Auto Mechanic. She is correct about the Anti-Lock brake damage, as it took 2 of my cars to figure that one out. Also, she has the fluid down perfectly, as I have never seen the nice clean yellow fluid as described, but could never seem to do a good brake flush either, without getting air in the lines which is a big no-no. So, by now you have guessed that all my vehicles must have been older cars, and you would be correct, except a New Plymouth Voyager for my Wife, while she had our most precious cargo in our Children. That 1994 Voyager was terrible with the Breaks and definitely had inner faults not of my doing, because I always bought the high end brake products. A week before a long trip, I did the 1st Front Break job due to shaky steering upon stopping, and found the fluid Brown. I broke off both Caliper bolts while trying to use a Torque Wrench to properly tighten them (though my torque wrench could have been bad) and because I couldn’t get the bolts anywhere else, I had to pay $12 each for the bolts! Lightbulb in my head, are New cars really worth it? My one suggestion (Tip for older car cylinder retraction) that our Female Mechanic is no doing is to use the C- Clamp on a flat piece of solid wood to make sure that the Caliper Cylinder retracts evenly! I’ve learned this the hard way, as she said that the brown oil corrodes the internal metal and rubber, which if working on older cars will give you bad results at times. Another Tech-Tip, if replacing your Calipers because one of the 2 front breaks locked up! This is more then likely due to a bad flexible house connection! The power assisted breaks will push the fluid through the tubing under pressure, but when they are to retract normally just a fraction of an inch, but won’t, is typically due to an inside collapse of the flexible tubing that you will not see from the outside of the tubing and creates a type of Check Valve. I cut the line on each end until I was at the middle where the house clamp is & sure enough, the house was collapsed internally, without any change to the look of the outer side of the tubing. That was by far my toughest mechanical conundrum I came across. Take it from a very tough “Lessons Learned”, that you could replace your Flexible Break Tubing every 100,000 miles or less often if you put a ton of miles on your car from highway driving. Hope this helps someone out there.

Okay so the metal tin pieces that are on the original calipers, do those not get transferred to new pads? I did that with mine but I have a noise that I can’t figure out. It is an intermittent squeak/grind that is pulsating and only at low speeds and only with light braking. I have replaced the front pads, hardware, and rotors. The bearings are good and do not have any play and do not make noise. The only thing I can think of is the tin piece. I use the CRC disc brake quiet and it goes away for a little while then comes back. Bad pads?

Okay well how about answer my question about the tin pieces between the caliper and pad? I actually fixed the issue last night I had a seized guide pin, but I removed the that tin piece from both sides because it was not shown applied to the new pads. And I have done many brake jobs that did not have such a piece. I’m curious what it’s purpose is

140 ft/lbs on those caliper mounting bolts and you still need to locktite them also? WTH GM?
@BlisterBang
@BlisterBang 2 жыл бұрын
She specifies 140 ft-lbf for the caliper bracket bots and the lug nuts. These bolts are larger on the front than on the rear. The rear caliper bracket bolt torque is 92 ft-lbf. The caliper slider bolts are 20 ft-lbf on both front and rear. The expansion and contraction of repeated heating and cooling cycles can cause a bolt, especially one that has little stretch during torque to begin with, to loosen. Use LockTite so when the torque drops on a temperature cycle, the bolt doesn't loosen at all. She used the (removable) blue - the right stuff for this. The red is a 'permanent' LocTite that you would probably need a torch to get off.
