Turn the old brake pad over and use it with the C clamp to press the piston back in. If you remove the caliper from the mounting bracket when you take things apart, all of this is easier. Remember to tighten the (dry) caliper mounting bolts with a torque wrench to factory specs to avoid brake problems when driving the vehicle. The caliper sliding pins need to be removed, cleaned and carefully lubricated with synthetic brake grease when reinstalled. Likewise, the contact points between the new brake pads and the new clips need to be lightly lubricated with synthetic brake grease to prevent binding and chatter. Many mechanics lightly lubricate the backs of the new pads with synthetic brake grease to prevent chatter and other brake noise. Those who are very picky take more steps to insure a perfect brake job, but for most people, the steps illustrated are all you need, provided the caliper mounting and caliper sliding pin bolts are tightened to factory torque specs. The lug nuts for each wheel also have be tightened to factory specs. (The money saved by doing a brake job yourself will more than pay for a decent torque wrench, but get one that goes up to at least 125 to 150 ft.-lbs.). Your video is very informative, to the point, not overly talkative, and well-produced; thanks for making it!

Awesome tips. I love when the pros are willing to offer up some tips of the trade to amateur "DIY" mechanics like myself. Thanks for sharing!

Good video and a very good reply. I just did my brakes and I couldn't get the pads on without removing the caliper from the mounting bracket. Also, put never seize on the stupid t30 torx that holds the rotor on.

Thank you so much. Was confident doing this after watching your video. Completed in about 2h because I had to drill these stupid screws out. Thank you.

Just got a 2012 equinox. First GM product in 30 years. Nice video. I believe that screw that you say holds the rotor on is actually for removing the rotor. Remove the screw and put a longer one in and keep screwing until the rotor pops off. Light tapping with a hammer helps. My 2 cents.

The recommendation is to open up the bleeder screw so that you don't drive the brake fluid in reverse and cause damage to the ABS module.

Good work. Some helpful tips: remove the caliper first from the caliper mounting bracket to make the reinstall much easier. This can be done by removing the two bolts that have a spring under them on the back of the caliper. Upon reinstalling the pads slide it not the mounting bracket and your caliper slides on easily. Also you can use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension. Then torque the caliper bolts to 20 ft pounds and the caliper mounting bracket bolts to 140 ft pounds. And the screw in the middle of the hub is referred to as a torx screw. Lastly your wheel lug nuts are torqued to 140 ft pound. Please use a torque wrench especially on safety pieces such as brakes.

Great video but telling us the size of the bolts and the torx would be really helpful. Is it metric or standard? Either way I wanna say thanks I appreciate it!

I am about to change mine. Is it better to clean the rust behind the rotor? Just curious. It looks kinda funky
@Altoelder
@Altoelder 6 жыл бұрын
Le Chevalier Savage are you replacing the rotors? Or just the pads? Replacing the rotors will obviously get rid of a lot of the rust on the backside of those rotors. Otherwise, it definitely wouldn't hurt to spray the back of the rotor with brake cleaner as well

Altoelder : I was reffering to the mount. Not the rotor. Mine has a rubbing sound when I apply the breaks. I am going to check my brakes first before I get a new set of rotors.

Le Chevalier Savage gotcha. I understand now. You can go ahead and spray that with brake cleaner. It wouldn't hurt. It isn't necessary though. Depending on what the sound is, you may need to replace or regrease your bearings.

Hi thanks for sharing is it the same for the back brakes...?

Depends on the year of the car. But for his year yes. It will be the same, though the rotors are larger in the center (bowl area) because it covers the parking brake

There's no need to clean the rotor all that gets filthy as soon as you drive it in the rain

2:10 if that hose is soooooooooo delicate why do they use it on such a critical part of the car?
@Altoelder

You can be as rough on that hose as you'd like. Just be aware that if you crack or tear it, your car won't stop. Up to you.

Best to hang the caliber with a bungee cord.

Good call. I'll add them to the description in this video. The caliper bolts are a 14mm socket. I believe the rotor screw is a T30 Torx head.

You gotta spray it with WD-40 first and let it soak in for a few minutes then before you reassemble it all back together every bolt or screw needs to be painted with anti-seize it will save you alot of headaches and time and money
