I found that whacking the bearing with a hammer to get it off was putting a lot of pressure on my struts, which are already on their way out. Also it was loud and annoying and took forever! Plus being on the ground I ended up hitting the side of my car too, it was a bit of a disaster. I figured though that another way to get it off was to attach the wheel back onto the bearing as if I was going to drive off...not torqued down but snug lug nuts. I then proceeded to kick the tire around the edges of the rubber and within a few good thumps it came off! I then took off the lug nuts and proceeded with the job. Some good ol physics for ya! I assume you could do the same with an old rotor as well, but the tire worked like a charm. I did it for the other bearings too and it was awesome.

It's because he pushed in the pads before. I usually use a c clamp afterwards against a pad but hes probably smart for bleeding it a bit. If he wasn't doing it on video he probably could do it way faster

He did it because he was going to have to anyway. He replaced the rotors. I would have replaced the calipers as well on this vehicle. I've never had to remove the axle out of the way. I just have been able to turn the steering to one side or the other to reach the 4 bolts on the hub assembly. And usually done in 20 minutes.

I just make sure the brake fluid isn't full so it doesn't overflow when I push the caliper piston back in. It is a good idea to periodically flush your brake fluid or use your bleeders so they're less likely to seize from rust. Wish they put copper antiseize on the threads of the bleeder screws for the cars in the rust belt.

Thanks for this video. Your detailed description made the job much easier. I did a bearing before by trying to wing it and spent a lot of hours on it, frustrating. I do have some comments though: Like many others, I don't have a lift. I only jacked up one side of the car. That way you can skip the crowbar trick since your wheel is not going to spin with the other front tire on the ground. Marking the alignment pin with chalk didn't work for me. After some fumbling with the pin, the markings disappeared on me. Permanent marker seems like a better idea. I also never bleed the brakes after a job like that. And: once everything is back together, also make sure to pump the brakes AFTER starting the engine while still in park to make sure your caliper pistons grab onto your brake pads. I did it with the engine off and the pedal sunk to the ground as soon as I started up. Scary moment when you back out of your garage without brakes...

I just did this repair on my wife's 2008 Impreza. I didn't have to remove the knuckle to strut bolts. I was able to push the axle out of the hub by hand making room for a socket to get to the hub to knuckle bolts. Haynes repair manual says to use a puller to push the axle out if it's stuck. No mention of disconnecting the knuckle from the strut. Also, from personal experience, whenever you remove the knuckle from the strut have the car aligned.

I had a wobble in the front left. Thought it was the cv axel so I replaced it. Helped a little but not completely. Found the hub to also be loose just as you showed so I replaced that too. It was fine for about 15 miles then the wobble came back. The new hub has the same free play as the worn one and spins a bit easier than out of the box. What would cause immediate premature wear like that? The axel nut was torqued to spec.

I have movement in my front passenger wheel, so plan on doing this as soon as possible. Thank you for the great detailed video, and including the torque specs. One question I have, when doing the one, do I also have to replace the other side too? Since I’m doing the passenger I’m wondering if it’s necessary to do the driver even though I don’t notice any play in that one.

When you do this work, make sure you buy four new bolts. 1A's hub, and pretty much everyone else's, doesn't include the bolts. If you're in the rust belt, you should assume they're trash, and if you're not in the rust belt, it's still a good idea. The bolts are subaru 901000238 (or 901000285). When you're removing those bolts (he glossed over that a bit) if you're in the rust belt, you should also assume you're going to need a torch to break those bolts free. Use at least propane. I just did this, and his video is excellent, except for the bolts. I worked the first one loose, then sheared the second (one of the bottom ones. I got out the torch for the other two, and I *really* needed it for the second bottom one. That one that sheared made the hub not want to come out either. Oy.

I did it this weekend, for sure if you don't replace the rotors there are many operations here you don't need to do ! Remove the complete caliper assembly by removing the two screws, you can unscrew the 4 bolts of the hub without removing anything else, and then reverse. No need to whack like mad like this either...

I have a question on the final removal of the bearing. I have seen a lot of similar videos where they take a small sledge and beat on the bearing to get it loose. It has worked in each video. However I hit mine about 5 times and the bearing came apart. So now I have one part of the bearing laying on the ground with the back part of the hub still stuck to the wheel. My question is why do I suck at working on cars and how do I get the other part of the bearing out of the knuckle??

Just remove the caliper, no reason to bleed it down, just rock it back and forth a little while removing it.

Good idea to remove the strut bolts. 17 year old Subaru here in Vermont. There is no way I was going to get those 14s off with hand tools. I was able to fit a 1/2" 14mm in there with the knuckle off.

Nice job and very informative. But you don't turn any bolt left/right. Maybe clockwise/counterclockwise, or open/close, but definitely not left or right. I also hate the American way to put "okay" in every sentence. Sounds stupid.

1. Pull center cap and loosen axle nut. 2. Loosen lug nuts. 3. Jack up your car and take lug nuts/wheel off. 4. More wrenches for leverage if your not a caveman lol. 5. No need to bleed brake or press in pistons all the way, just take bolts off that hold caliper bracket and brake, then pry it off of the rotor. 6. Hub grappler + slide hammer + wheel bearing removal tool = easy win for anyone not using a press.

1AAuto usually has great videos, this isn't one of em. He needs more practice working, and a lot less talking. Just torque your alignment bolt, no need to align. What a waste of time. Someone help him with the difference between a hub and a bearing.
