In this video I show why you should never use Seafoam. I give three reasons right at the beginning. I also give reasons why you SHOULD use Seafoam. Hint: I use Seafoam and in my experience, the stuff works! Also, it's a pretty fun product to use with a super satisfying plume of white smoke after the 'hot soak.'
Newest version SeaFoam: amzn.to/2E8UI0n
In this video you'll see me use Seafoam on my 1995 GMC Truck Suburban otherwise known as the GMT-400 or K1500. This truck is the same as the Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon and even Escalade.

To really get that cloud of smoke you want, you have to spray the throttle body so much that you stall the engine. When you finish the can and have your assistant switch off the key IMMEDIATELY when the can goes empty. Do not delay this step. Then let it heat soak. You will then get your billowing cloud of smoke.

I used that sea foam spray in a 2001 Honda Odyssey and I completely fogged my entire neighborhood. It was incredible. 218k miles before treatment. I have done it twice on two years and get the same reaction. Also spraying directly into the intake with a straw on is scary. I learned that lesson on my Silverado. Straw flew in and it never came back out. Never took the intake manifold off to look. I guess the valves nibbled it away. It did no damage. Scary but funny.

Seafoam just performed it's second miracle for me. $200 195,000 mile '99 Accord. 'Check engine' light P0401 on for low flow in EGR system. Car was running fine. Engine warm, I removed the power brake booster hose from the booster. I poured about 6 ounces of Seafoam in a cup. I started the engine and used the brake booster hose and let it suck in the Seafoam. It was sucking too fast, so I regulated it a bit by partially obstructing the opening with my thumb and I did not fully submerge the end of the hose. Not revving the engine at all, just letting it barely idle and suck in the fluid. Small amounts of smoke started coming out of the exhaust, and even a little bit from between the exhaust manifold and pipe, and other places that don't normally leak. I continued adding the fluid. When the fluid was almost gone, I let the engine suck in enough to stall it. Not too much, I did not want to hydro-lock it. I then let it sit for about 2 hours. I started it and made a big billowing cloud of very dense white smoke, which did in fact arouse the curiosity of at least one neighbor. I drove it hard and varied the engine speed and load for a couple of miles. On hard acceleration, it made even more thick clouds of smoke. I thought it was running fine before, but now the idle is smoother. I used an $18 ebay scan tool to turn off the 'check engine' light. A little bit of driving and a day later, and the light has not come back on. Turning off a 'check engine' light for a few bucks is obviously a great deal, but for the other cars on the road keeping such a wide distance away from me, the nosy neighbor and of course the huge puffy clouds of smoke - might make Seafoam worth the eight bucks just for the entertainment value alone.

You didn't kill the engine with the spray. I can hear your engine still running in the background while you're holding the empty can. You should lower your rpms and spray until it kills the engine when you feel the can is almost empty. That way you'll actually hot SOAK the engine. Once you shut off your engine most of the sea foam had probably already been burnt off. If you do it right, your neighbours should be looking out their windows and the fire department should arrive shortly after.

I would recommend doing this BEFORE you change your oil. Do the Seafoam thing, do your post-Seafoam drive, then do your oil change. At this point, you might want to also hit the MAF with some MAF cleaner, as part of this maintenance scenario. This is the sequence I would do, If I was going to use Seafoam to turn carbon into big billowing epic white clouds of smoke, while making my engine cleaner inside.
@mitch9509

Why clean MAF after doing this in particular. You inject this an inch away from throttle plate in throttle body. The MAF is up near air cleaner. I mean the MAF should be cleaned with MAF cleaner every now and then. But not after this in particular

I tried seafoam on a ford 302 that was running rough, one thing I noticed is that the lifters quieted down, also the idle was much smoother, and it misfired a lot less and overall just sounded much smoother when driving. Your truck was already running good before you put the seafoam in, on an engine that runs rough, seafoam is definitely worth a try.

Your videos are fun Jimmy. Couple of points. The smoke you seem so interested in is really Seafoam that is not completely burned, so not getting a ton of "smoke" is not only OK, it is preferred by the method you are using (my guess is your neighbors agree with me also). You have "throttle body injection", your injectors are in your throttle body so the distinction you were making was unnecessary. And alternate way to do this is to find a manifold vacuum source, disconnect whatever it's going to at the manifold and rig a separate vacuum hose to it long enough to facilitate you dipping it in and out of a regular can (non-aerosol)of Seafoam. I prefer this method and it does produce more "smoke" at momentary intervals. This way you can get more in at a time with each dip. You'll have to be on your game with the throttle if you are in a hurry but.....if the engine stalls, let it sit for a minute +/- and soak a bit. This way is a bit more nuanced and takes a little more time but IMO it's more effective. I can't prove it but logic says to me that the more product I can get in there at once, let it dwell and then repeat several times should remove more carbon and goo from your intake and combustion chambers. OK, fire away wise guys. LoL

So you're saying, if you have a tbi engine like my 88 chevy Silverado 5.7 v8, less smoke is better when spraying it directly into throttle body?
@x-man5056
@x-man5056 Жыл бұрын
@@chaddavid9897 No. With Seafoam, I get the can that has a screw top, not the spray. Find a good manifold vacuum source and tap a short (2-3ft) rubber vacuum hose by whatever means required, start the motor and bring it up to 2K rpm and try to keep it around there as you dip the vacuum tube into the Seafoam intermittently. You'll get bigger gulps of Seafoam that way and its easy to gauge how long of shot to use. Try to make it stall with each gulp but keep it running.

Took it for a drive and didn’t get any smoke through my neighborhood, but I do granny it through the neighborhood (I’m considerate like that). We live near a school so traffic turning out onto the main road as super backed up. As soon as someone let me out, I stomped it. Engine bogged down like crazy, like it wasn’t getting any fuel, and I thought I had screwed something up...but that didn’t stop me from keeping it on the floor just to see what happened. A few seconds later everything went back to normal and I just happened to glance in my side mirror and it looked like someone had set off a bomb in the middle of the road. I will say I have not seen any performance or fuel economy increased since I’ve done it.

The way to do it is similar to Wal-Mart: Basically, have a way to meter the intake side of the engine, using the brake booster hose (it's like using a vacuum pump to bring in the Sea Foam directly into the intake system). Then, use half of the can and run it through your fuel system -- and keep the car running at idle the whole time in Neutral (manual) or Park (automatic).

Used Seafood on our 256K mile Ford Explorer. Used one can of Seafoam, which is hard to do, as the throttle is drive-by-wire. Got the engine to stall just before the can ran out. Let her heat soak 15 minutes. Started the engine back up, got some smoke. Put her in gear, gave it some gas, and she stalled right away. Got her started again an slowly, slowly drove off. The smoke show began. 250,000 plus miles of carbon, and PCV residue in the intake came off. Hitting the expressway at 45 mph was a fog show. The truck now no longer shudders at part throttle, and idles super smooth.

I have been using a can of Seafoam in the tank about every third fill-up and it is keeping things mice and clean (as far as I can tell). I also use it in my motorcycle and it has improved the mileage there. When I get back to the States I will put Seafoam in my gas again as it has sat for two years and I do not like to run nasty old gas through my carburetor. I don't use the spray. Use the liquid. The instead of spraying into the TB, pour it into you Vacuum Brake Booster hose.(disconnect it from the booster, I attach a small funnel to help pour it in). Pour about 1/2 can. Just fast enough but keep it running. As you get close to a 1/2 can mark. You will have to keep the engine in a high idle. Pour in faster to the point it starts to flood the engine. Turn off the engine right away and let it hot soak the 10-15 mins. The start up and watch the smoke. You really have to flood the intake take and valves to get the smoke. Good luck.

I have a 1988 C1500 with the 5.7 350 TBI V8 and it seems like from time to time it has engine hesitation problems. Like when I'm driving it, sometimes it acts like it doesn't want to get up to acceleration when I have my foot on the gas pedal and it drives like it's not getting enough fuel to allow it to drive smoothly. I've had those problems twice back in May, and both times I used Autozone's Carburetor Cleaner to fix it. Now just yesterday the problem has returned, and I used the carb cleaner again. This time it didn't fix the problem. Do you think Seafoam can fix it?

@jerryg50
@jerryg50 5 жыл бұрын
On a 4 stroke gasoline or Diesel engine I don't believe it does any good. This would be a lot of work but before using this treatment pull off the heads and examine the valves and valve seats. Also examine the piston tops. Take a good quality photo of each valve, valve seat, and each piston top. Examine the exhaust valve ports on the head. Document everything in detail. Now re-assemble the motor with the new gaskets and etc. Put back the original oil. Do a viscosity and purity test of the engine oil to grade its condition. Before pulling apart the engine get an emissions test. Have the cat converter tested. Now do the treatment. After finishing, run the vehicle for a few thousand miles. Now pull everything apart again. Do a detailed examination and photo document. Also test the oil. Do a detailed comparison for before and after. I bet no improvement at all. I would expect some damage to the emissions system especially the cat converter. I would never do such a thing to any engine. I remember something about running some water spray through a hot engine to clean out carbon. With any of these sprays going in to a hot engine there is risk of cracking valve seals or the valves. Also possible damage to rings. This has to do with washing away some lubricant affect of the oil. If you have carbon buildup to the point where there is a performance change this means there can be bad valves or bad valve seals. Maybe some problems with piston rings. Sometimes carbon accumulates at a spot on a valve seal causing a hot spot and burning the valve surface or the seal. Only a rebuild of the head will properly fix this. This will happen with a warn valve or using too low an octane fuel or poor quality oil, or not doing the oil changes when due. Also having many miles on an engine. If the engine output is good, the engine idles as smooth as it should, and the fuel usage is normal for the type of vehicle and engine, it should be okay. If you really want to know more then do a compression test. Get a diagnostics done for the timing, fuel pressure, vacuum levels, timing advance with RPM change, fuel flow rate, high voltage to the spark plugs, and etc. As for myself, if the engine is running smoothly, there are no unusual sounds from the engine, acceleration feels normal, and the fuel consumption is normal, there should not be anything wrong. When I was in my 20's up to my early 30's I was building muscle car engines. I was building engines up in to the 600 HP range with 4 speeds for on the street. This is why I know something about engines. As for the new tech vehicles I did not keep up so well. As for the basics of a gasoline engine there has not been that much change in the principle physics of how it works. I am nearly 70 years old today. I had my times with this...

Seafoam is a petroleum based product so just the use of it will cause smoke until all of it is completely burnt off. If its being used on the intake side and being directly introduced to the cylinders without being diluted in the gas tank it will most definitely produce smoke.

Seafoam - SEA-FOAM - designed for use with 2 cycle marine engines, also useful for other 2 cycle engines like lawnmowers. It only works if it sits on the cylinder to soak in and help break up the deposits, otherwise it is 99.9% useless. The smoke is just the seafom burning. It also causes problems with catalytic converters.

Those old T-body engines have fuel constantly cleaning the inner surfaces of the intake manifold and runners. Newer injection system designs never see fuel up in the intake, just a mixture of air and crank case vapors, which equals more crud build up in the intake stream compared to your old truck. Newer isn't always 100% better . You'd be better off just dumping the cleaner in the fuel tank and drive as usual.

I bought a 2000 ram 2500 a few years back and ran the seafoam both in the gas and crankcase and then used the spray bottle in the intake manifold, this product restored horsepower, gave better gas mileage and also had a better low end on throttle response making the truck able to get in and out of traffic while entering and exiting the highway on/off ramps. Yes there was a bunch of smoke but it depends on the types of fuel you use. Essentially if you're using a fuel with good detergents in it at purchase you are continually cleaning those said deposits from your engine shell V power fuel is all I run in my truck after a experience of hesitation and power loss I used shell Vpower and the old ram ram like a whole different truck prior to using sea foam

This is the process for my oil changes. I have a 95 GMC K1500HD 350/5.7L GMT400 and love it! I run a 350/5.7L TBI, S10 2.2L, and Merc Mountaineer 302/5.0L and do the same thing for all of them. Seafoam in the oil crank case and fuel tank about a week before I schedule the oil change. A cup of kerosene in the oil before you change it. Then the I put a cup of kerosene in the crank case run for about 5 minutes after running it on the drive home from work or the store or better to do it just sitting in the drive way after you get back and let it work without a load. Your engine now is stripped so you have to rebuild the lubricity of the engine. I used to use Zmax but after watching (Project Farm) his tests are great and I understand it is just mineral oil, which I thought it was and just went with it but now I use Lucas Synthetic with a heavy oil (Summer 20W50 no additive or 10w 30 with additive for winter if I am running for a long drive (Md, WV, to Fla). Around the house depends on the vehicle but the S10/2.2L 5w-20 Syn Change every 5k, Small blocks 10w30 in winter only additive for the long hauls and 10w40 for summer with additive and 20W50 for hot summer long hauls. So far 230k on the 95 K1500 5.7L, 200+k on the Merc 302/5.0L, and 210k on the S10/2.2. The S10 is known for head gaskets every 90k it has had one replaced and a new head at 180k but I run that lil truck like NASCAR and still runs great! Currently got a 95 k1500 suburban white in color too. I get tons of smoke from mine every time I throw a can down her throat. I generally do it 2-3 times a year depending on how the truck is running. A few things that I noticed you doing that I've found to be less effective and create very little smoke from burning the seafoam too quickly. Dont use the spray either dump it slowly or preferably use a vacuum line the pcv or brake booster works great. Dont rev constantly suck in seafoam till its almost stalls plug vacuum line with finger and use the throttle to keep it from stalling. When u get to the last 1/4 or less of the can proceed to feed it seafoam till it stalls. I like to give it some throttle as I give the last drink so it will pull to all cylinders as it stalls out. Whatever is left in the can I just dump down the throttle body to sit. I generally let it sit 30-60 minutes before I even bother trying to start it. Once it starts be ready for the fire department to show up at full speed hoses ready. One thing I do extra is after its back up to temp and I have taken it out and beat it like a red headed step child is I do a steam cleaning. I use 4 bottles of water and just like the seafoam slowly feed it to the engine keeping it from stalling by gently revving it once I've got the last of the water fed I put it back together and then go for a nice 40-60 mile hard run and just feed it all the fuel and abuse i can. The water rinse helps remove alot more carbon deposits than seafoam alone
