Thanks, I try to get the distances and hog sizes recorded most of the time. It is interesting to see how the ammo works at various ranges. Sometimes, we just end up with a pile of hogs and I am not certain (come video editing time) which hogs were shot at what distances, hence why some data were missing.

While I see where you are coming from, having to shoot a hog more than once is sort of bad form in many cases. HOWEVER, showing some well placed shots that required follow-ups might be good for an educational video. That will take some time to research. I have lots of videos.

First time watching. I am all for eradication of invasive species. What do you do with your harvest? That's a lot of meat to process for one family. Keep up the good work.
@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 3 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the channel, David! I wish we could do eradication. At best we spot-check/kill hogs to help mitigate the damage that they do on the particular properties that I hunt. As a result, the hogs we are killing mostly do not live on the properties that I hunt and instead come into feed from surrounding properties where they have safer refuge as there is less hunting on them. I don't eat feral hogs any more. If a landowner or friend asks for feral hog meat, I will get them some. Otherwise, we split open their bellies and leave them for the buzzards.

@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 3 жыл бұрын
I know I put bullets into 386 recovered hogs. Some were solely shot by me. Some were jointly shot. Ben probably shot 75-100. Some of those overlap with mine, but from my small area in north Texas, I would guess we took out more than 450 (recovered) hogs. That does not include any lost in thick brush or that managed to run off property.

Awesome shooting. I'd like y'all take a trip to South Africa and put paid to a bunch of baboons. It's open season all year with no bag limit and they are nasty and destructive. Glad to see an effort to thin the herd. Here in Montana we are starting to get an infux from Ca-na-da eh? and our fish and game is more interested in eradicating EVERY WOLF IN THE COUNTRY. Can't wait until they start tearing up crops and farms.

Thank you!!! In Texas, it is illegal to sell hogs that haven't gone through a 2 part inspection process which includes inspection while alive. So hunted hogs cannot be sold in Texas. @CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 3 жыл бұрын
I noted the date in the video, LOL. Before that, I was not using anything cheap. I am a fan of quality gear. A good barrel and a good trigger are critical to good shooting in my book. That is probably because I need all the help I can get. Combine that with a good BGC and maybe a piston system and life is good. Don't get me wrong, some of the cheap stuff is still pretty good and some is outstanding. I just haven't experimented with it an nobody has offered to sponsor me with it. Lone Star Armory offered to let me use one of their rifles, no restrictions (I told them that things get messy in the field!). It has been a delight. It is a quality piece of kit and they really stand behind their work.

@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 3 жыл бұрын
I don't eat feral hog anymore. So, yep, about 99% gets left for the coyotes, buzzards, and worms. I will gladly donate a complete carcass to somebody local that wants it, but no longer cut up hogs for people that say they "need" the meat. Most of those people really just want free butchered, bagged, labeled, and refrigerated meat that they can access at their convenience, during a reasonable hour of the day. That puts a lot of undue time and expense on me when my job is supposed to be killing hogs doing damage to people's properties.

I've seen quite a few of these hog blasting videos. Looks like a great deal of fun and I'm all for it. But I do have a question: is the goal to eradicate the hogs, or have fun shooting them a few at a time without impacting the population? The news claims there are more every year, and they are spreading. It seems to call for the old Australian approach to rabbits; using a combination of fences, driven mass hunts and biological warfare if required. With 2 or three passes of tens of thousands of recruits walking in lines driving the pigs into kill zones, it would seem one could wipe them out county-by-county in a sweeping line, in fairly short order. Use the army; live ammunition war game... A nice infrastructure project. This has been done before. There's nothing like the USA for taking a simple concept and scaling it up, so I just wonder why this hasn't been attempted.
@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 3 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, neither. We don't do "eradication" and we aren't doing it as some sort of managed fun hunting regiment to maintain the population. We are doing mitigation, plain and simple. Why mitigation and not eradication? Eradication implies killing of all the hogs, which would be great, but we only get access to small parcels of land. We can't kill the hogs on the properties we don't hunt. However, we make a difference to the properties we hunt by killing the hogs we can and driving off hogs that we can't. That reduces the destruction on the properties we hunt and our goal is attained. I am out doing this 3 nights a week. Yes, the Australian rabbit scenario. Interesting case study. You do realize that they failed to accomplish their goal. Despite the fences, drives, and introducing rabbit hemorrhagic fever into the population, there is still a rabbit problem today. www.thoughtco.com/feral-rabbits-in-australia-1434350#:~:text=Currently,%20the%20rabbit%20inhabits%20around%202.5%20million%20square,continent%20has%20is%20now%20threatened%20by%20the%20rabbits.
@markhoopertr
@markhoopertr 3 жыл бұрын
@@CarpeSus Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Eradication would definitely require a government initiative, to gain access to all properties at once. I see those vids of farmers' fields full of pigs and I wonder that any of them (the farmers that is) can sleep at night, with all their product being chewed up. Unless they can charge enough for hunting rights and make it a business.
@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 3 жыл бұрын
@@markhoopertr There are so many issues involved. On any given field I hunt, deer do more crop damage than hogs, but we can't shoot deer for being pest. Hogs do a different kind of damage (rooting) in addition to eating crops and such. Government? They are so good at such things, LOL. Remember, there are still well over 200 million rabbits in Australia.

I never claimed to make a dent in the population. When you treat for roaches or termites in your home, you don't make a dent in the population. I am mitigating the damage done on the properties I protect, however. I can't control hogs on other properties anymore than you can control bugs outside of the area you treat.
