I grew up undiagnosed, school was really hard, I didn’t like it, no body understood my struggles, I was also undiagnosed dyslexic. So all in all school was not easy, but I did ok over all and then went on to qualify as a nursery nurse. We have come so far in our understanding of Autism which is so good I was eventually diagnosed as dyslexic at college and ASD when I was 56. I’m sure Simon will do really well, he was so excited! Loved seeing him fiddle with your hair, so sweet. I had long hair as a child, I loved playing with it and I also liked to bit down on it, not chewing it, just bitting the end of the plates between my teeth, it made a lovely sound and feeling in my mouth. I’d probable still do it if I had long hair!

Simon will do fine with other children his age in preschool, look at him on his first day of school. Was he excited on his first day of school? Mom, he did well on his first day of preschool. Simon is a big boy now, and he goes to school now. Your daughter is a great big sister to him, that’s what this world needs right now a family like yours.😊😊😊

Simon did better than I did when I started school for the first time. I was 2 and went to nursery school and I would cry when mom left than go have a nap in the corner with my teddy bear. I did it for the first month or so.

Looks like Simon enjoyed his first day of school. No crying when Mom left as he found toys he liked. I was a preschool teacher and first days were hard as the three of us would be trying to comfort 2-3 kids each as it was their first time away from home. My first year I had a student that was a Spanish speaker only. By the end of the school year he was a fluent English speaker and you had no idea that he was an ESL child. I hope Simon's language takes off and he is able to verbally express himself more.

On the subject of vocabulary development and verbal skills in general and one or two things to be ready for: I was visiting the friend of mine who has two grandsons who are on the spectrum earlier today and the younger one (with level two/moderate autism) who is in either his second or third year of kindergarten (age six, almost seven) and usually has verbal skills about on par with where Simon is currently has just recently learned his first “four letter word”. Today he was jumping on the couch in his grandmother’s living room and the cushion was uneven and he almost fell off the couch and caught himself at the last moment. In any case when he fell he said the word “Oh” followed by an expletive beginning with a letter near the end of the alphabet. I am mentioning this because with his level of verbal development (similar to Simon’s) it seems likely that Simon could begin using his first “four-letter words” at literally any time in the next six to twelve months (if not sooner) if his verbal development continues at its current rate. Therefore you will need to think about how to deal with this situation when it comes up (bearing in mind that he might not really understand those words yet when he begins using them). When I started using those words (around age four) it was another year or two before I really started to understand them. Regarding another verbal development to prepare for: By now, Simon is likely learning basic words for “head”,”shoulders”,”knees”,”toes” like in the song. With time he will learn more advanced words. This can lead to awkward situations later on when he eventually learns from his father or an older sibling how to “go” in the toilet standing up. This will almost certainly lead to Simon pointing and asking a “what’s that called?” question that the person he asks might not feel ready to answer yet. This happened to me when I was four-and-a-half years old and I asked my father that question. Not knowing what he should say in the moment he made up an answer any said “This is your heart!” For about one-and-a-half to two years I had no reason to question that answer. Then one day when I went from the regular kindergarten class to the special education one (this was back around 1982) the teacher said to the class “We are going to learn the Pledge of Allegiance, put your hand on your heart.” After I responded to this in the way you might expect she asked me “Do you have to go potty?” I said “no” and she told me to put my hand on my heart again and this sequence repeated maybe three or four times before she told me that it was time for me to head to the boys room. I did and came back a short time later. I did not get in any trouble for this but she did call my parents and my father had to explain what he told me and how this sequence of events happened. My parents are now able to look back and laugh about this but at the time it was pretty awkward for them (as they frequently mention when they talk about it) and it is a good example of how not to handle a situation like this. I think this pretty much sums up my observations and memories on this topic for the time being.

I can tell that Simon’s growing up quite a bit here. Not only is he talking more, but in addition I just noticed how big his hands are getting (especially in the scene right after he finished his first day at preschool when you were asking him questions about his day).

I don’t know how far into the toilet training process Simon was when this video was filmed but it’s very good that he told you that he needed to be changed (even if he needed some prompting). It’s even better that he’s completely daytime trained now.

Seeing the garage in this video reminds me that I think I learned the word “garage” some time before I turned five. I think I already knew that word at age four-and-three quarters on the trip to Old Saybrook, Connecticut. I already knew the word “water” at that point. During that trip I learned the words “sand”, “beach”, “ocean”, and I learned about laundromats and indoor and outdoor showers. I might have been a bit older when I learned certain other words (like “seagull”), though. I might have been as old as nine or ten years old on a family trip to Rockport, Massachusetts when I learned to say that word.

Autism People is Very Special I’m Autism 15 years old boy

I could not quite tell whether Ezra was nervous about riding in the SUV or whether he’s excited to see Simon but I just noticed for the first time that he seems to be doing a hand stim more than I usually remember him doing.

I remember doing the same thing with my cup that Simon almost did when I had my first vanilla bean Frappuccino from Starbucks a number of years ago and getting some of the Frappuccino all over my shirt, etc. I was about thirty years older than Simon is here so that was pretty embarrassing.

Simon looked pretty tired when he was drinking his smoothie (or whatever it is). Maybe that’s part of the reason why he took care of his “bathroom break” in his diaper while sitting on your lap (perhaps while pretending to be on the toilet) instead of asking for a bathroom break.

Oh my goodness I see his Jammies were on backwards we have to do that with both my kids as well 😂

I had a really tough time in school I wish I had my school days back just talk to a really good friend who's autistic and he says he wish he had him back too talk to him for about 3 hours not too long ago I just got off the phone with him about an hour ago I was on the phone from Williams to 3 hours. Toward the end of the video I noticed Simon drinking his smoothie (or whatever it is) with the straw mostly in the middle or on the right side of his mouth. When I was younger I had to do this because due to a right hemisphere condition it was difficult (or even nearly impossible) for me to drink from a straw if it was on the left side of my mouth. If Simon also struggles with this you will probably want to mention it to at least one of his doctors. They could get a referral for a neurological appointment if needed.

Your two boys are amazing and helped me realize a lot of things about myself too, im 16 though so i have to wait but I am going into med school sooner than later and I have devoted my life to it when I was pretty young and im still pushing even if i may be slightly illiterate.

He is adorable and I love how calm he is even though he must had missed mommy at school. I recently started a job working with autistic kids at school and they have tantrums when they are told to follow schedule and wait. My kiddo started to kick the door when he knew he cannot just grab his backpack and go home.

Both my brother and I also went to an autism preschool when we were little. Except in my 2nd preschool year I was at a regular preschool part of the time as well, I had my aid with me though same thing for kindergarten. My brother graduated 2 years ago and now pretty much is with his caregiver family all day every day. I just graduated high school this year and am going into a vocational program where I live that’s for people with mild developmental disabilities the skills to find and keep a job. It’s a 1 year program but we can go back for another year if we need more support.

In Simon’s preschool are they working on present, past, or future tense with Simon or any of the other students? I noticed toward the end of the video when Simon was pooping in his diaper while sitting on your lap that while the caption read “I went poo poo” what he actually said was less clear. While I have some difficulty reading body language in many situations even today I have had enough experience observing younger cousins in situations like this (as well as a memorable TV commercial or two I have seen over the years) to recognize the body language that occurs in this type of situation. You will notice if you rewatch the very end of the video that Simon sort of does a partial fist clench while playing with your hair (just before you ask Simon the question) and he later does a full fist clench shortly before the video fades to black (even after you asked the question). Also Simon seemed to be concentrating (based on his facial expressions) until the end of the video much like the kid in the Clorox ad (simply titled “Daddy”) whose father was too busy talking about his new minivan to notice what his son needed (with predictable results). Also years ago Pampers had an ad campaign (Their infamous and controversial “poo face” commercials) and many of the toddlers in those videos had similar expressions to the one Simon had here in that last scene. Therefore even though the caption read “I went poo poo” I think he may have actually been trying to say something more along the lines of “Yes, I’m going poo-poo!”. Only Simon knows for sure what he was actually trying to say, though. Maybe when his communication skills improve he can watch the clip and communicate what he was trying to say at that moment (Or you can make some guesses and he can tell you which one is correct when his communication reaches that point some time in the future). By the way I don’t think it’s likely that Marie is on the spectrum. The fact that she was laughing at Simon when he pooped tells me that she is probably neurotypical. That’s not one hundred percent certain, though. My sister (who is level one) was able to laugh at me around her age when I did anything that was not considered to be age appropriate. You could always have her tested if there’s any concern, but in light of how she did on the tests in one of your recent videos I would be more likely to question the accuracy of the online tests that she and most of the family took in that recent video. One final note about communication and tenses: You will want to make sure that Simon has an adequate understanding of past,present,and future tenses before enrolling him in kindergarten whether that ends up being next year or the year after (If kindergarten students today are expected to know this). You may want to begin reading up on what kids are currently expected to know and be able to do before beginning kindergarten (if you are not already doing this).

It’s good that Simon already knows how to say the word “hot” here (and understands it). If my sister (who is level one like Simon) had speech therapy when she was this young she might have learned certain concepts (such as “hot” and “cold”) months (or even years) earlier.

That’s so sweet of Simon enjoying his first day, mind if I ask, when did Simon first started talking?

I was just looking at the Wikipedia page for Dunstan Baby Language. I noticed that two of the sounds that Simon made were similar to the ones mentioned on that page. The first example was toward the beginning of the video when Simon was first waking up and he was sort of yawning I guess. The second example was near the end of the video in the scene when he was drinking his smoothie (or whatever it was). These sounds are easier to notice if you watch the video with headphones on. I realize that Simon’s not a baby anymore here, but since (at this point) he’s just learning to talk it looks like he’s still going back and forth between speech and earlier forms of communication. You might want to observe Ezra and see if he makes any of the sounds referenced in the Wikipedia article. Dunstan Baby Language has not been scientifically reviewed yet but if there does happen to be anything to it then maybe the observations in the article above will help you to notice some of what Ezra needs (in terms of hunger, etc). Also if Ezra makes a sound when he needs to “go” similar to the sounds that Simon made before he was trained then observing that might help to get Ezra trained if you are using the “bowel training first” method with him. Urine training might take a bit longer but the use of cueing noises (like in elimination communication) or the use of basic words or phrases (like “pee-pee” or even just “pee” or longer phrases like “go pee-pee” could help with that). To begin with you can use the sound, word, or phrase whenever you notice Ezra “going”. After a number of days (or maybe a bit longer) you might start seeing results by using the appropriate sounds, words, or phrases when he is in a place where you want him to “go” (in either fashion). Wikipedia also has an article on Elimination Communication that summarizes some of the basics. You can try some of the methods outlined in article right away (if you aren’t already) and see if you get any results. While Wikipedia is not one hundred percent accurate (by any stretch) these specific ideas are fairly easy to test out. Also, one thing that Wikipedia has going for it is that it’s still free. By the way for anyone who doubts that Simon has autism he seems to go back and forth between “baby language” (of a sort), echolalia, and relatively traditional speech depending of mood, level of alertness, stress levels, and maybe some other factors that I haven’t thought of yet (as illustrated in this video). I have also noticed this in other kids that I have observed over the years with either level one or level two autism. Also given where I was developmentally (level two when I was growing up, level one now) it’s pretty much a forgone conclusion that I also did this when I was younger. My family didn’t make any home movies (that I know of) so I can’t give any specific examples right now.

I think Simon probably used his diaper while sitting on your lap (and drinking a smoothie (or whatever it is)) because he was still pretty stressed out after his first day of preschool and doing this was probably relaxing for him. If you already started with Simon’s potty training at this point in time (which seems logical from watching the potty training video from a few days back (plus the fact that he’s completely daytime trained now)) then it is likely given the way he is wiggling on your lap and apparently pushing given the hand movements that might qualify as a slight fist clench (and some of the sounds he made) that he is perhaps pretending to be on the toilet for a few moments (after noticing that he needs to “go”). This practice of (one might say) “using a pretend potty for a real potty break” is actually a very common behavior for toddlers who are just learning to use the toilet. It is a safe way for them to get some toilet training practice in without the fear of falling in or the fear of the sound of the toilet flushing. Therefore while it is technically an “on purpose” rather than a true accident I still wouldn’t classify it as misbehavior deserving of any punishment (including a time out) like a temper tantrum would be because it is not done for manipulation or out of anger or spite. It’s instead (it would seem) rather a form of mental rehearsal that actually helps with the toilet training process given how quickly Simon finished training after this. Mild regressions like this are actually pretty common (and a normal part of the toilet training process) and not anything to be concerned about even with some kids as old as kindergarten age in stressful situations. A first day of preschool would definitely qualify as stressful. I remember that my own response to my first day of preschool was pretty much the same as what Simon does here even though I was five-and-a-half years old at the time.

This is like the first time I didn't embarrass myself It was a good day, that's a good first for everything. I always knew Koi was mine but I was scared taking the test. I was just looking at a web site earlier this morning and remembering back to when I was about Simon’s age (or slightly younger). Due to a combination of right hemisphere damage from a stroke when I was born and other complications of a premature birth my mother had to use her fingers to keep the left side of my mouth closed so I could suck formula or juice out of a baby bottle effectively. I sometimes notice that Simon’s mouth seems to move in a similar way to how my mouth moves (especially in the scenes at the beginning of this video in the early morning the right side of his mouth moves more than than the left side of his mouth (just like how my mouth moves when I talk (even now in my late 40s))(I can see this whenever I watch myself talk in the mirror or on video) and I wonder if he had the type of feeding difficulty that I referred to above when he was younger. If so you might want to ask one of his doctors if an appointment with a neurologist might be in order. If he does have a right hemisphere condition of some type they have at least a year to address it (perhaps even a couple of years), but dealing with it early is best because the brain is more flexible when you are younger (There is more neuroplasticity). Simon is still young enough for this to be addressed through any necessary modifications to his speech therapy and perhaps the addition of some physical therapy as well. Simon will still be autistic after this but his speech and social skills will likely be better than they would be otherwise. The feeding and drinking difficulties that I alluded to above made it such that I always preferred sippy cups to bottles (Since I could easily drink out of a sippy cup myself). When a sippy cup was not available I preferred a drinking straw to either a baby bottle or a regular cup because I could manage this most effectively when it came to drinking juice, etc. it’s usually easier to reposition a drinking straw than an entire bottle or sippy cup.

Ivan hasn't been feeling well lately so I got him a kitten I almost brought 2 kittens home but these kittens are only 3 weeks old and should be with their mother a little bit more, but they become lovable when you take them away from your mother and they're very good, Pat's just kitten is so lovable, she's so cute. I'm in love with him so it's it makes me happy when my kids don't feel good and I go get them a kitten and make me feel like a big man when my kids have something they want and. Cause I loved. I loved kittens when I was little kittens and my favorite animals. I have a 16 year old cat. She's getting app there because she's in good shape. She still goes out chasing chipmunks and bunnies out of the yard.❤😸

At first my son loved going to early education, but all of a sudden he would start hyperventilating and throwing up as soon as he saw the parking lot. He refuses to go to the point I took him out. The teacher has an autistic child as well, but for some reason my son doesn’t want to be near that place. So I’ve been “homeschooling” the best I can for now. Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to understand what we are trying to do. And I was stationed at MHAFB, I can agree it gets hot there!

I noticed towards the beginning of this video that Simon’s smile (At least I think it’s a smile) is uneven. The right side of his mouth seems to be moving a bit more than the left. I also have this. For me it was a result of a right hemisphere stroke at birth. It’s possible that if Simon has something like this (in addition to his autism) that they might need to add some physical therapy onto his weekly routine over the next couple of years. You may want to ask one of his doctors about this. I noticed this because I am watching this video on my TV in 1080p. I usually watch these videos on my iPhone or iPad and details are less noticeable on those devices.

That's awesome he went. Emmalina I'm not going to send she's not even potty trained and she's non verbal. She actually freaks out when me or my mom are gone. I know she wouldn't do well in a school . For her I think someone coming to my house and her on cyber school taking her cues is how she actually learns best. I wish Simon best of luck. He looks like he had fun

I learned a lot of things in school but I wasn't a very good student but I had good opportunities especially in the special needs rooms in high school. I did very good in high school because II loved the kids you know I was like a teacher's aid to Moses kids. I had a lot of fun doing that, but it was time for me to stop going to school because I was. 22 years old had kids. My daughter almost was in school before I was. They gave me a lot of chances but I messed them up in special Ed in high school.

If Simon does not yet know how to put his own socks on you might have him begin working on this. Simon is now officially toilet trained and he should be able to also manage this soon if he isn’t already.

Hey Holly, does or has Simon ever had stranger anxiety? I would love for my nephew to do this but his stranger anxiety due to Autism is quite bad it takes few meetings with someone familiar present to get him to stop crying and being scared. Do you think schools/daycares would be open to at least allowing caregivers present in the beginning and slowly waning their presence so that a child could adjust to the new environment/ppl?

Simon seems to prefer eating with his fingers. If he is struggling with using a spoon (from a coordination standpoint) you might have him do some work on this with his therapist. He may develop skills in this area more quickly if he sometimes practices eating foods that he enjoys eating with a spoon instead of his fingers.

It looks like Simon might have been calling Marie “Da Da” here but I couldn’t quite understand what he was saying. Does Simon understand the concept of gender yet? For example does he know the words “boy”,”girl”,”brother”, or “sister”. If not he should probably learn those words either in his preschool class or from his speech therapist before he is eventually enrolled in kindergarten some time in the next year or two.

I was not starting at a school for kid with autism until 6:th grade, amazing that Simon does this early :) Just a random thing by the way I have noticed that you maybe dont now, your surname Anderson sounds very swedish. Here is that one of the absolutly most common names and a name from the very old Sweden then kids got their fathers first name (like John or Anders) and the ending ”-son” or ”-dotter” (dauther) based on the gender as surname. This makes me a bit curious about if your family have any connections to the enormous migration from Sweden to USA that happend during 1850-1920 then a fifth of al swedes emigrated to USA :)

They tell them they haven't really had time diagnosing coy with autism, and so they're gonna test him when he turns 9 years old again, they're gonna give him a little test before then, but just a little test work with him a litthe middle. Test cause he I i I don't think he's autistic

I'm a moma of twins waiting essesments your son Simon reminds me allot of my son Asher. My Asher is such a sweet boy too and loves hair. Both my boys have problems sleeping they thrash and headbang may I ask what are those 2 different sleeping things you have for your son? The black one on the bed and the blue one. If I didn't drop out of school, I wouldn't like love to bend a special needs. Teacher hands-on cause. I wanna been so good at that cause. I did it so many good things for the special needs. Kids in high school that I knew when I was sense. I was in preschool I'm getting in touch with some of them right now. One of them's a truck driver, he was gonna be D room. And we were best friends in school. We talked a lot about what we did. You know back in the day?

Decide to move because it's hard to stay in a state where all your friends turned it back on you that happens so many times with me, but we're all cool a lot of them are in Florida. But I'm not gonna say in contact with him because they still do what they do I dobut everything's gonna be cool. I talked to a lot of women they said maybe we meet up just you and us. Cause I don't want to Because I told him I don't want them anywhere near my kids. I don't want you to have mutual respect for each other. But it's hard but I have a lot of good friends that I do trust around them especially my special. My youngest, that was very hard for me losing all my friends.

You might want to cut back on your use of words like “num-nums” when you are talking to Ezra. He’s not a baby (or a toddler for that matter) anymore. You don’t need to necessarily completely stop this just yet but you should probably introduce him to some of the actual words so he can learn to communicate in those terms using either sign language or his iPad initially. I think Ezra is probably far enough along cognitively to begin learning the meaning of some of the actual words in connection with his morning routine like ”food”,”cereal”,or maybe even “breakfast”. I don’t know exactly where Ezra is cognitively but an assumption of competence might help in situations like this (to some degree). On a different note: Here’s another idea (albeit unconventional) that you might consider for introducing both Ezra and Simon to basic words and phrases for certain miscellaneous subjects. A number of years ago I bought the book 6000+ Essential Spanish Words from the Living Language series published in 2004. For the purpose of what you will be doing right now you will be skipping the Spanish words completely and focusing entirely on teaching the English words. This book is divided into the General Subject areas of 1.General Descriptive Words and Phrases, 2.People,3.Feelings & Thoughts,4.Actions,5. The Five Senses, 6. Family and Relationships, 7. Clothing,8. Health, Hygiene & Safety, 9.Human Society, 10. Money & Economy, 11. Politics and Government, 12. Social Problems & Controversial Issues, 13. Food & Cooking, 14. Around the House - The Home and Home Activities, 15. Around Town - The Town and Daily Town Activities, 16. Transportation, 17. School, 18. Work, 19. Computers & Internet, 20. Sports & Leisure, 21. Entertainment & Media, 22. Vacation, 23. The Natural World That book was $18.95 new at Barnes & Noble when it first came out. You can probably find your own copy on Amazon, eBay, or perhaps even from a used (or other) bookstore in your area over in the foreign languages section. If you can’t find the Spanish book you might find a similar book for French, Italian, or just about any other language that will work just as well for your purposes since for current purposes you will only be teaching the English phrases by subject and skipping over the foreign ones for the time being. This can be a useful way to get a fairly comprehensive word list by subject to help with Simon and Ezra’s vocabulary development and to help them to use language functionally and perhaps one day fluently with any method that they are capable of learning (speech and perhaps some signing as well (if needed) for Simon, and Signing and his iPad for Ezra. If Ezra can eventually be taught to speak as well (even if just “yes” and “no”, and perhaps his first name) that would also be good. On a related note you might want to ask Ezra’s therapist and/or someone at his school about any specific sign language books that they recommend (if you have not already done so). This pretty much sums up my observations and advice on this subject for now (both conventional and unconventional).

In Italia una scuola per bambini autistici non è nemmeno pensabile. A parte i soldi, che nn ci sono credo, ma soprattutto per 'impostazione mentale'. Sono insegnante di sostegno da 13 anni, qui da noi ogni bambino, qualsiasi tipo di disabilità abbia, é inserito nella scuola statale (a meno che i genitori non vogliano una scuola privata, normalmente presente solo in città molto grandi e gestita quasi sempre da religiosi) Voi penserete: tutti insieme! Meraviglioso! Inclusivo! Ecco....a volte, anzi spesso lo è. Ma in certi casi io sento che questi bambini avrebbero bisogno di altro. Bambini cerebrolesi gravi, spesso in aula sostegno con la loro maestra...bene, ma se esistesse una scuola, un posto, per impegnarli in fisioterapia o terapie occupazionali(non i 45minuti di terapia dopo scuola, dove devono essere accompagnati dai genitori) La mensa.. molto bello mangiare tutti insieme! Ma chi calcola il bombardamento sensoriale per un bambino autistico: luci, rumori, gusto e profumo del cibo! Non possono mangiare 100 bambini in silenzio come i frati!
