9:46 : My poor dad installed locks on his filing cabinet to keep me from pulling out the drawers and possibly having the cabinet get out of balance and fall over on me. I started playing with the locks (little bolts like the one on the door on the bottom right) and had them open within minutes. I stimmed with those locks for my entire childhood, and they're still there 3 decades later (though less well lubricated than they were), but never served any purpose but as a fidget toy. Our newer filing cabinet has no locks.

I think I was at least four years old before I knew how to blow out a birthday candle. Does Simon know how to ask questions yet? If not then maybe you and his speech therapist can begin working on this if you haven’t already. The first time I remember being able to ask any questions I was around four-and-a-half. With enough work on everyone’s part I think this should be achievable by around that time or at least by age five. Some basic questions one might start with are “Why?” and “What’s that?” and any simple variations of these that one can think of. It’s good to see that Simon is officially toilet trained during the day. As Simon’s speech improves one useful skill that ties in with that is to be able to ask where the bathrooms are in an unfamiliar location. On a related note when I was in school (until about first grade) I could often find a bathroom without much difficulty but I would sometimes get the boys rooms and girls rooms mixed up. Back in the 1980s this was interpreted as a disciplinary issue when in fact I was genuinely confused for maybe the first month or two of the school year in kindergarten (in one school) and then first grade (in another school). By the time Simon gets to kindergarten (some time in the next year or two) you will want to make sure that he can do these things.

Regarding communication: Today on the way back from dinner I saw a mother teaching her kid (who seemed to be somewhere in the three to four year old age range) about traffic lights. She was pointing to some traffic lights and asking him which one they were waiting to see turn green before they can cross. She used the question “This one or that one?” and waited for an answer. To do the same thing with Simon (if you aren’t already doing it) he will need to know (at least) the words “traffic light”,”red”,”yellow”,”green”,”stop”,and “go” (as well as “and”,”or”,and what they mean). You will also want to make sure that Simon understands that the word “go” has more than one meaning. With Simon being toilet trained so recently it would not be unusual for confusion and possible toilet accidents to occur while you are instructing Simon on this (due to some possible confusion about word meanings in a given context). I had difficulties with this myself at least until I was five-and-half years old in preschool. Fortunately with Simon being level one/mild any confusion he might have in this area will likely last for much less time than mine did. I was confused about this for a year or more. And confusion that Simon might potentially have on this would likely only last weeks to months (at the most).

The owner of the place I go to for my weekly autistic adult social group tried starting one of these sensory gyms, but the revenue coming in from it was not enough to cover the $6k monthly rent and it shut down as a result. I think she is planning on trying again down the road in another location.
@7Aheadfamily
@7Aheadfamily Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is the tough part. Matt and Heather, the owners of this gym, I don’t think make really any money on it. It’s more a charitable donation to the community and we are thankful they are so generous!

@JonBrase

I might have been obsessed if it had been out then, though I was obsessed enough with mechanical details that a car might regard the kind of movie I really wanted to see as a brutal horror film. My Halloween costume at age 8 was a V8 engine (well, really, a cross section of a V2 hand-drawn by an 8 year old with questionable motor skills and *labeled* as a V8, with real spark plugs glued onto the drawing at the cylinder heads. Oh, and a grody used carburetor for a hat).

It will be interesting to hear over the next year or two if Simon comes up with any unique words or phrases like those from today’s video on Matt Rose’s KZfaq channel titled “Kids not knowing the words for stuff” That video has some interesting examples of words that kids come up with for “icicles” and other things that adults know the words for but kids often don’t because they are not often used in everyday conversation.
