I actually love playing 2nd violin. It¡s where you actually hear the music from all the different instruments, not just the melody, like 1st violins do. From a playing point of view, 1st is more interesting. From a musical point of view, 2nd is more interesting. Except if you play Radetzky march. Then 2nd violin is deadly.

Same here! Third violin has several violinists playing way worse than me, but I didn't get to join third violin because fourth would fall apart otherwise. I know it sounds arrogant saying this but the conductor even apoligized to me explaining it like that. I don't mind though, I actually enjoy providing harmonic support by simply playing some notes in tune although I'd - of course! - like third or second violin better

1st violin is the main melody (when there is no solo part) 2nd violin accompanies the rest of the orchestra as background noise. composers in the classical era, aka me, made it very clear on what is the main tune and what the audience should be looking at. now you can see why there was drama in the music world and the elitist mentality of being 1st seat of any instrument. they just were given significantly better parts. in the modern era of equality, this mentality is looked down upon, but back in the good old days, it forced musicians to be kept at a higher standard to fight hard for the top spots, thus having an overall better performance as a whole.

I’ve been in both sections. All through middle school, I was 1st violin. Then when I was a freshman in high school, they put me in the 2nd violin section. At first I was all down on myself because I thought that it meant I wasn’t as good as the 1st violinists. Then when I started playing it, I realized how challenging it was to play harmony. I later went back to 1st violin section, and I had to re-learn those songs I learned when I was in 2nd violin. Anyway... The experience gave me a higher appreciation for both sections.

This video belongs in the Hall of Fame of Brett's Deadpan Looks. There's the envious deadpan, the murderous deadpan, the "my soul has left my body" deadpan, AND the murder-envy-soulless deadpan.

I was recently switched to second violin and I actually like it. We get to be different from the first violins and make the song sound more unique. We also get the melody sometimes.

most annoying thing ever. shouldn't it be harder to be a 2nd? we have the harmony and thats hard most of the time!! but ppl make it like we are the worse players. I hate this system #2ndviolinstruggles

Wonder Girl Well, if it was too complicated, the piece would get too confusing, as the melody is carried by the firsts.

@@isaaccook2877 how do you expect them to be better in the areas where violins shine (high notes), when the teachers exclusively assign 2nd pieces that consist of low notes.

If you’re sick of being a second....work harder than the 1st to get the spot you want, being a 1st violin is just more difficult.....so of course they’re gonna get more recognition

*Before a concert when I was 7 years old* ROM means: *Random older musician* ROM: Do you play the first or the second violin? Me: I have only one violin. ROM: No that's not what I mean. You are dueting with your friend right? Me: No. What does first and second violin mean anyways? ROM: I see. To put it simply, it means the main and the backup? Me: huh? ROM: Still don't get it? Me: I don't care about first or second. I am a soloist. ROM: *Facepalm*

In my orchestra i have to play 2nd violin because im one of the best in the orchestra and someone has to carry 2nd violin. Even better there are only 3 good 1st Even more better 2nds outnumber the rest of the strings yet only the first 2 stands play and im the only one consistently playing the right note and... sorry I got carried away basically 2nd violin sucks and i have to carry them.(at least I get a 2 note solo (if you’re wondering its 2 dotted half notes; b and d))

QuaTsar finally someone that understands me just that I do truly love the 2nds and couldn’t left them and go first cuz if I do the thing would be worts and basically there are just two stands that actually plays (I’m at the first stand)
