Thank you for this information. They look so much easier to manage with a little more time to prevent swarming of a new mated queen than the tiny little styrofoam boxes or queen castles plus the frames are interchangeable! Fantastic in every way.

David I think I asked you this before but how long would you think it would be before I can take a frame from each of my nucs I will be getting to make a split and either add a purchased queen or maybe have them make a queen? I know there's so many variables to say for sure but just an estimate? Would it be say June/July? How long do you keep Queens for sale ?

Great video! If you wanted to move that 2-frame nuc that is up against the bee shed to another location in your apiary, how would you do it to minimize the loss of foragers? I cannot imagine having to move it two feet at a time. Do you have a favorite method of moving hives within the same apiary?

I like these 2 frame nucs, however last year I had trouble when I tried to go from 2 frames to a 5 frame nuc. When I transfered the 2 frames to a 5 frame box with all that extra space the hive beetles got bad. I fought em but those hives did poorly. IDK what I did wrong.
@hornbakeracres9650

I would say the population was not large enough when you made the transfer. I know Barnyard Bees sells "beetle barns" that appear to work well. Fortunately here in Arizona hive beetles are not much of a concern.

David do you use pollen patties in your hives? I have been using pollen sub power like you do, but it gets cold her most of the time her close to Baltimore, Maryland in the winter. This past week it got down to 2 degrees, which is colder than normal for use in Maryland and this week its going to be in the mid 50"s. My goal is to build up the Nuc's so I can do splits in the spring. I am going to put my pollen bucket feeder out this week while they can fly. Do you have anymore advice for me?

I have a question. I got in my hives today and one of them had a little mold on the side of the hive, which I know is a moisture problem, and thank God the hive is still doing great and strong. Should I swap the box out and remove the frame with mold on the wax and clean it up? Or will the bees clean up the mess?
@beestinger881
@beestinger881 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That's what I plan on doing. It was strange both hives are set up the same and only one did that. That was the strongest one and full of worker brood. Think I will swap the box out and see if there is something wrong with that box and clean it up and also remove that one frame and clean it up. When is the earliest you would start making splits? I live in southeast Texas and we have been having pretty warm weather here, today was almost 80. I know we usually have a cool snap around Mardi gras time and right before Easter. I don't want to get in to big of a hurry but would like to start asap building up. Keep up the videos, love em. Missed ya on Joe May's chat. Hope you make the next one. Thanks again!

The comb that they are buildin between the frames can be avoided if the interior space of the box is reduced from 3.5" to 3" or 3 1/8".

I just built 4 of these 2 frame nucs using your instructions Dave with the same dimensions for the feeders. My question is how to handle the ventilation in winter(30f or summer 105f)?
@jonathanswoboda
@jonathanswoboda 5 жыл бұрын
I built six the other day. I routed out a ~1/8th" by 3" recess in the top of the back. This forms a 1/8th" x 3" vent at the top of the back. I also added sides to my roof to keep it from warping that should keep the gap small and stop bees from entering.

I try it with no insulation, in direct wind, no snow coverage, almost made it in the worst condition 👍 im sure only one Factor , food or insulation would have save them on the coldsnap and long winter.

Just in general, how long does it take before the 2 frames are full and ready to be moved to a 5 frame? I know they fill smaller space quicker but not sure how close I need to watch a 2 frame. I built about 4 of them for this year to try. Just trying to get an idea of how quickly I need to have some 5 frame nucs ready to move them to. I've also been toying with the idea of trying to build a 5 frame nuc that has a 5 frame deep on top in hopes of taking advantage of the queens desire to lay up and down versus going sideways. However, got to get my hive numbers up first incase they decide they don't like it and decide to find another location...lol.
@hornbakeracres9650
@hornbakeracres9650 5 жыл бұрын
As far as how fast they will build out the 2 frame mating nuc, that unfortunately is entirely dependent upon several factors. Quality of bee stock, how many bees were initially placed in the mating nuc, availability of food sources, weather, etc. I know you asked "in general", but time frames can vary drastically based on the above factors. My suggestion would be to have the 5 frame nucs ready prior to building any mating nucs just to be sure. Bees don't like to wait for a beekeeper to be "ready." Good luck and happy beekeeping!

This year my wife wants to do commercial honey. My issue is a massive shortage of bees and money. So this year my plan is to create as many 2 frame nucs as I can and start making queens ASAP. To make bees I need queens. The more queens the more bees. After watching your videos I believe you probably have the most efficient queen mating and growth possibilities. Then I am going to combine that with Ian Steppler at Canadian bee keeping blog's ideas for equalizing before the flow. I'll take my 5 frame nucs and build queens then I'll split them amongst the 2 frame mini mating nucs to Get those queen cells emerged and bred. Then I will skim the excess brood from those mini nucs to amalgamate back directly to 10 frame hives. It's gonna be hard and I have no clue how much success I'll have due to our short season up here in Saskatchewan Canada. But if I can get 6 extra 10 frames out of this plan by the end of June then I doubled the hives by main flow I would have had and will have nucs coming out the rear end for next year. Gonna be a damn interesting experiment. It's funny. I literally have more offers from people to keep some bees on their farms then I have hives even at one each. Crossing my fingers!!!!

If you are Zone 8,9 or 10 you can split sooner and if you're Zone 4,5,6 you will probably be splitting your colonies later. but also look at your bees. I grew up with bees down here. We were far away from any docs back then. If I got stung granny just spit some snuff on to the spot and rubbed it in. Which I believe was just to toughen me up. In other words, move on boy and go play. It also depends if you're allergic to any bee stings. And depends on one's pain threshold if not allergic. Cuts, scrapes, we just grinned and bore it. LOL plus after a few times of granny spitting snuff crap on you, i didn't go back for anymore pain adjustments. I think that was her plan all along. You either adapt or continue to get spat upon. Boy! Did you just get stung? No granny! Puff!! I was outa site and heerin! Now I work with my bees like David, short thin pants, short sleeve shirt and tenni shoes. I wouldn't be wearing them shoes but my wife says otherwise. Too Country fied she let me know right away. What if the Reverend and his family came by fer a visit, I dee clar man. Clunk! These Nuc's would bee too small for the nectar flow in Hawaii . Nuc's from a split need more room here , 5 frame size is about right . In most of my 9 bee yards across the 40,000 acres I had to work , the nectar flow was very strong and if they ran out of room before you got back to them , you would lost them to swarming . At my 'strongest 2 yards , I only keep 10 hives each for my Honeybee Control Project at 2 hotels . These hives yielded every 2 weeks , 60 pounds of honey ,year round or roughly 2,4 pounds everyday . A nuc could never last very long at these special yards .
