The video is AMAZING. Still I've got some questions to ask. "shoot for the stars" Do you have extremly close idioms to this one in American English?
@EnglishLikeANative
@EnglishLikeANative Жыл бұрын
You could check these colloquial expressions in American English: 1. Aim high (be ambitious) 2. Go for broke (to try as hard as you can to get or achieve something, even if this involves taking risks or doing dangerous things) 3. Go for it! (to make the maximum effort to achieve a particular goal) 4. Bet the farm (when not achieving the goal would have serious consequences) 5. All in (to be totally committed to something.)

Could I say that "To sow the seeds for success" means - 'prepare'?
@EnglishLikeANative
@EnglishLikeANative Жыл бұрын
It DOES mean "to prepare," to do the little things that are necessary for later success. (Many) plants grow from seeds. Typically, after plowing the soil to soften it, the farmer sows the seeds. "Sow" is pronounced exactly the same as the words "so" or "sew." To "sow" seeds means to scatter them on the soil. You sow the seeds now, so that they will grow into plants later. "To sow the seeds" is often used figuratively to mean "to prepare." It refers to early preparation. It means to do something that seems small, like drop a tiny seed on the ground, that may grow into something enormous later.

The phrase "take a chill pill" is slang and it means to calm down. I personally don't use it or hear many people say it in Canada because it sounds a bit rude. I would only use it with a close friend, if they were being annoying.

Hi dear Anna Thanks so much for this lesson Is this idiom an American idiom or british? "To hang sb out to dry" Thanks in advance❤❤❤
@fabrice9252
@fabrice9252 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that one that I didn't know yet. According to my researches, it doesn't seem to be specially an American one but belongs to 'general English idioms' and in use for decades! and probably both sides of the pond. :-)
@EnglishLikeANative
@EnglishLikeANative Жыл бұрын
If I hang someone out to dry, I leave them in a bad situation when I could potentially help them. There are many possible situations where we would use this, but perhaps most commonly we use this when someone's trust is betrayed. For example, I ate the last piece of cheesecake, secretly. Only my sister knew. And then later on, when everyone was looking for the cheesecake, my sister told them that I ate it. "Way to hang me out to dry!" I said. So now, I am hung out to dry-the bad situation for me is that everyone can blame me for eating all the cheesecake. I would say this is American English.
@liudmylabondarenko6499
@liudmylabondarenko6499 Жыл бұрын
I also agree that it is American English which means to get someone into trouble, especially by making them take the blame for a bad situation.

My Secret Love My soul has a secret and its mystery: One love, eternal, in a moment conceived... The grief is hopeless, I kept it silently And she, who made it, never knew about it Alas! I would have gone by her, unnoticed Always by her side, yet always apart And I shall have my time 'till the end on earth Daring to ask naught n' having naught received For her, although life made her tender, sweet, She follows her path, distraite, with no heed For whispers of love from another homeland At austere duty, piously faithful, She'll say reading my verse, of her all full: "Who might be this girl?"... and won't understand. F.D. 17/09/21.

What does the phrase 'silver lining' literally mean?
@EnglishLikeANative
@EnglishLikeANative Жыл бұрын
A silver lining is literally something which covers the inside of something and is either made of silver or is silver in colour. For example, the inside of a jacket is covered in a thin, slightly shiny material. This is the lining. You can say the jacket has a silk lining or it has a blue lining. A lining is the cloth on the inside of, for example, a purse. (I think of a lining as silky material, but it doesn't have to be.) The saying means that you can't see it from the outside, but there is something valuable or desirable there. BTW, the saying has nothing to do with the linings of clothing, etc. Imagine (or actually go outside and look) that there is a cloud blocking the sun. The sunlight behind the cloud makes the edges of the cloud look bright, i.e. silver. If you google: cloud silver lining and look at the images you'll see what I mean.
