This video covers how to replace heat shields and fuel injectors when fixing the Heat Soak cylinder 3 misfire problem on Jeep 4.0 L engines. I'm not a certified mechanic, but this is A WAY to do this project.

Great video. Thanks. I just bought my first Jeep last month and am learning the ropes of how to work on it. I have a intermittent cyl 6 misfire when idling. Thinking the injector is gunked up with sand as my jeep just recently came to east coast from Cali. Going to do the 4 hole injector upgrade.

Another common cause for a 4.0 random misfire code, especially if you cant feel it or hear it, is a failing crank position sensor. The evil one on the bell housing. If it goes out, might as well burn down the jeep because its hell. Another thing worth mentioning, is these things like the cheapest most basic champion plugs, in copper flavor. .035" gap. When you get them they will be at .036" trust me that extra bit will screw ya. Some of the hipo guys will say gap them at .040". Unless you have a highly modified engine with all the bells and whistles, not worth it.

Well, at this point since they are 19 + years old, might as well just fix it and get it done and over with, and consider it a good time to replace the rear main while you’re at it. On a side note, if you asked me 10 years ago if a Jeep XJ would be an excellent first vehicle to have, the answer would be yes. If you asked me the same question now, I would say that they would make an excellent first project vehicle. I’ve had 3 XJs in 15 years. My first 2 were totaled being rear ended

same leak happened with me, when working on your fuel rail and injectors next time you need to remove the fuel line from the throttle body where its leaking. When you were disconnecting the fuel rail it was still bolted to the throttle body and punctured a hole in the line. My fix was I got metal pipe cutters and cut the section out that had the hole, get rubber fuel rated hose, slip it onto the metal lines to fill the gap and then i put a hose clamp on each end and tightened with a Flathead.
@combatxj27453 жыл бұрын
Nah, mine was just corroded. I’d been smelling gas for a while. I made my own supply line from a flex hose instead of that steel tubing. Was really convenient.

Heat shield needed to be done. 16 mile run and she stalled at home, vapor lock. Continuing on to service the A.C. unit. Low end compressor switch has failed and so no compressor running. No compressor running means no electrical fan coming on. Jumping the switch kicked the compressor on so that's good. Direct wired the fan and it works. I'll replace the switch and then check the coolant. Owning an ailing xj borders on self abuse....lol.

Awreet, if the pressure in the AC is down then the low side switch won't activate the compressor and in turn won't activate the electric fan. So I added freon and brought the pressure up, retested the switch and it's now ohming good. Compressor works, and the electric fan works now which will add to removing heat on the intake/exhaust manifolds and I'm cool in the cab, whew. Lesson learned. If your AC goes tits up you may be in for some engine heat/vapor lock issues, strange as that might seem......still had to replace the factory heat shield.

Anthony Hernandez, Sorry, I haven’t had that exact issue. Just remember, your magic combination is air, fuel, and spark. Find out which of those is dropping out, and you can start tracking your problem. Otherwise there are a million combinations as to why.

Thanks for the video. You mentioned in your description, and in the comments below that you upgraded your fuel injectors. Please, I have a couple questions, one concerning the injectors, and another concerning the heat shield. I'm currently installing a 1992 (XJ) 4.0L engine in my Jeep CJ, and I would please like to preemptively do the heat shields, and possibly also do the injector upgrade. Please, do you know if the CBXB060 Mopar heat shield will fit an early 90s 4.0L engine, and ditto for the injector insulator 56028371AA? Concerning the injectors, I found previously that injectors from a 1995-1997 Dodge Neon w/a 2.0L engine should properly insert into my fuel rail, and connect to my injector wire connectors without any modification. Please does this sound correct? I assume since my Jeep is manual transmission, I should get the Neon injectors for manual transmission? Thank you, Tim
@combatxj274511 ай бұрын
Hey there! Thanks for the feedback! I’m not positive, but that heat shield should fit. I’d check an online parts catalogue to be sure though. You probably won’t have to do the injector insulation (was a problem on late model 4.0 engines after 1997 I believe). That insulation sleeve would fit though. The injectors I used came out of a neon SRT. They’re better for fuel atomization. Should be what you need. I think you’re on the right track. Injectors should be the same between auto and manual. Just take your time and use the synthetic grease like I used here. The injectors can be incredibly stiff to get in and out, so be patient. God speed!!
@DylanFahey2 жыл бұрын
I know it's a heat shield but it also stops crap from falling into the exhaust manifold and having a nice little fire later on. (oh, I see you used grease on the o-rings, that's a pro-tip. Also, check your intake for any missing o-rings that may have come off when removing the fue rail/injectors).

Not sure if you're still looking back at this video but I definitely have the same problem. Do you think just insulating fuel injector 3, like you did near the end of the video, would suffice? Or do all injectors need to be replaced and then insulated? I insulated my injector 3 and it worked great for a month, then the problem came back. Honestly might be because I didn't insulate it very well lol (I didn't cut it to fit as well as I should have). I am thinking about just trying to insulate it again but cut the insulation and fit it on better. What do you think?
@combatxj27453 жыл бұрын
Well, if it’s the heat soak issue, see what kind of shape the foil heat Shield is in. If it’s in the “what the hell” stage, I’d start there. Then make sure you insulate #3. You shouldn’t need to replace your injectors to fix this particular issue. I only did it because I wanted better fuel atomization. Just getting two birds stoned at once.

Google part# CBXCB060 SHIELD-EXHAUST MANIFOLD I'm not positive, but I think it could fit a 1995 4.0. The injectors should be in the same general location, but since the '95 used a distributor, had a different head casting, etc. I'm not positive if the whole fuel rail setup is the same. It will work for your '01 for sure. www.moparpartsgiant.com/parts/mopar-shield-exhaust-manifold~cbxcb060.html

Hey man great video. Unfortunately I am having a PO201-PO206 codes. My Jeep as far as I know has not had a heat shield on it since I got it. And I have changed injectors and cannot get rid of the code. Would heat shield remove the code?
@combatxj274511 ай бұрын
Hard to say. This heat shield fix is for a misfire on cylinder 3 that was recommended by Chrysler. You could have seal failures on your fuel rail, or your wiring connectors might not be seated properly. Might have chip failure for the circuit that drives those injectors. It could be a lot of things. You’ll have to start chasing leads otherwise you’re just gonna end up loading the parts cannon. Good speed. www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/p0201-code-help-255919/

Hard to say man. Your timing might be off or something. You could have a leak on your fuel rail. Could be a lot of things. Real hard to say without putting hands on it. Try releasing the pressure in the fuel rail by releasing the Shraeder valve and see if you can eliminate fuel delivery as a problem and go from there I guess.

Thanks for the video! So I just upgraded to 4 hole injectors on my 2000 xj. I changed the plugs and add a fuel rail and injector cover kit. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015NOKWQY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I had heat sink issues when shutting off engine the exhaust manifold would heat fuel in fuel rail and fault out number 3. So far runs good but i'm having the same starting issue. Also, as I started to test drive I had no oil pressure. Don't know if the computer had to relearn the switch so I replaced that oil sensor switch and that fixed that.
