Jeep inline 6, 4.0 liter rough idle after restarting (Heat Soak)

This is a 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ that has an inline 6 cylinder with the 4.0 liter. It was having a rough start for approx. 30 seconds after it was at operating temps and was shut off for a few minutes but less than 30 minutes. I have been told it is a common issue with the inline 4.0 in the Cherokee's, Wranglers and other vehicles with the inline 4.0.
The OEM part #'s are
56028371AA = Heat shroud for injector Approx. $11.00
CBXCB060 = Heat shield Approx. $4.00 (does not show for a 2000 or 2001, but is the right part from a recall)

I had this issue on my 01 Cherokee. Would happen every time I started my Jeep shortly after turning it off. Engine would either start and rough idle for about 20 seconds, or it would start and then die. It would give me a check engine light and code for misfire in cylinder 3. I replaced the heat shield and added that other part for the #3 injector. Now when it heat soaks and I start it, it will do the same rough idle or die, but this time gives me codes for multiple misfires. My aux fan does work properly and turns on when the temperature gets too high, however it wont turn on until the engine is actually on to cool off the engine. So I wired a switch to the cable that powers the aux fan. Now I can turn the aux fan on whenever I please. Before I start the engine, I'll start the fan. Let it run for 10-30 sec depending on the temperature. Starts up just fine every time, even if the temperature is over the normal 210-212 it operates at. Haven't had a heat soak problem since.

Maybe I overkilled a little but I was sick of this Problem , I ordered 6 upgraded reman fuel injectors off of ebay ( approx $80) , I replaced the Heat shield mentioned in this video except i got two and doubled them , went to auto zone and purchased those Accel mesh type heat shields for plug wires and put them over my injectors and they fit like socks And I have pictures if You PM me on FB.( I didn't notice until I removed My injectors that 3 of them were cracked from heat ) It fixed My problem , looks neat and with the new type injectors increased My MPG ..

my 97 wrangler never had this problem just the normal bad drainback valve problems of that year but my 96 grand does it a lot and the first couple times were really weird. it would stop idling so i would have to do drop it into neutral to keep it running driving home when coming to a stop to keep the rpm up. had it die as i rolled back into its parking spot in the driveway, I tried restarting for shits and giggles and it ran perfectly fine

That large foil "heat shield" was actually a recall addition on most 4.0 L engines to prevent debris from building-up and catching fire eventually. It is not intended to block heat, though I assume it would keep some ambient heat from flowing upwards just being where it is. It looks like you do enough offroading that debris actually gets up there, so its good to replace it as long as you were adding the sleeve over the injector anyway. But I have the same problem after a heat-soak with my 2001 2wd Cherokee, sometimes severe enough that the CEL flashes and I have to shut it down for 15-20 minutes and let it cool before it restarts properly. But since I am strictly city driving, I'm considering removing that debris shield completely to allow for air-flow while driving, as well as adding the heat-shield sleeve. Hope this fixes it :).

@ajphillipsjeeps 7 жыл бұрын
Yea it pretty much was just 2 pieces of aluminum with no insulation left, for the price i figured replace since i was in there working anyways. By the design of it with the insulation in it i would assume it was designed for more than just blocking debris, but who knows what and why the engineers dream up sometimes. either way the fix seemed to work If i recall jeep has it labeled as heat shield, but it could be just Shield and I assumed ti was heat since the aluminum.

It shouldnt since it is only about 20-30 seconds once the engine is restarted and technically it is burning less fuel since it has vaporized. if it throughs a code on your engine it could since your engine would go into pre determined run instead of usng inputed information.

Listen up tubers. Seriously I fixed my heat soak issue on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0l. It has something to do with the return fuel line back to the tank. This issue has nothing to do with a new battery or old battery, I have had both in it and it does it with both. it is caused by heat soak which cause the fuel to vaporize inside the injector. Jeep has actually documented this issue with the TJ due to the design. I am glad you found a work around for yours to work though.
