My dad has the 4.7L in his 2004 Dakota and I love the 4.7L. Hurts my heart to see that people would let engines go out and tear up like this. Truly heartbreaking. Glad to see you're rebuilding her. I'd say it's really worth the time.

I have an 03 and when I got it there was about 138K on it. It now has about 210K on it and is still running well. The only issues are the ticking when it first starts until the lash adjusters get fully pressurized and a low end knock until it gets warmed up. My plan is to find a wrecked 4.7l at a salvage yard and rebuild it so I can just do a quick swap and have a spare sitting around if I to rebuild it. Would love to take and do a few mods and squeeze a few more horses out of it.

Any problems this engine has is with the top end, and its because they have a unique coolant bleeding procedure people dont know how to do it right

@@nickflopper yep hit a deer with my 05 and it cracked the radiator and busted the grill and headlight but that was about it but it was winter so when I got the truck it was still winter and It drove fine the body shop was a shop that me and my family all take out cars to if it’s insurance and just to expensive for parts to fix ourselves or it’s winter and this past April it started to overheat and I always carry a gallon of coolant with me incase of emergency cracked the stupid blender valve or bold whatever you wanna call it and out came all the air

My dad bought the 4.7 L in our truck brand new in 2005 almost at 200,000 and had no problems. just the other day The oil light came on. Thanks to my research I can now confidently say it is probably the oil pump. We are planning on rebuilding the entire truck.

I'd like to add in alittle information regarding how those pistons look. All the chewed out part. But first. The rocker is what really hurt it. Basicly that rocker fell off and when they do so it can hold a valve open making for the piston to piss the valve can clearly see the witness mart on the piston and when it did that it pushed the valve seat off as well. The seat did not drop from the commen heat problem these suffer on. All that damage on the top corner of the piston was not done by the seat or really by that little bit of the seat probably did not help but as you see it's on the top not the bottem that bit would trash the bottem. Go look at the head and then back at the piston... The lowest point on the head in the cylnder is were every piston has all those markings.. those are pre detonation marks from crappy gas or some one running a chip in it with regular gas. These marks are commen on 00-04 base 4.7s the h.o from 03+ and the revision never had these problems as those 2 motors used knock sensors but the 00-04s did not making for this damage to happen that's why you see it on every cylnder not just one.

First gen 4.7s from 98-2004 had their teething problems, the second and third gens were better and most of those issues were sorted out. You have to do the regular maintenance to keep it going of course and don't run the piss out of it and let it overheat. Love my 4.7 in my '06 Dakota, still going strong at 80,000 miles.

Just so people know, in 2008 dodge fixed all the problems in this motor and completely redesigned the heads and pistons. It’s now a great motor and practically indestructible, and they increased the HP to 310hp. I have 224,000km on mine and the rod bearings still look pristine. So make sure you get a 2008 and up motor and you’ll have a great powerful motor.

I'm still rolling in a 04 it's current rolling 320,000km I do alot of towing with it and I'm not the nicest with it. The paint problems with the pans was a 00-02 problem. Now being said some 03 modle years have had paint problems but there early 03s with a 02 buil date. November of 02 was when it was changed for the paint they use on the pan. Easy way to tell is the out side of the 02-00 pans rust so much easier and faster. The 3.3 3.8 in the vans had the same problem in the same years. 03 also had a updated version known as the h.o or high out put and then the revision in 08 so there's 3 different full updates with little things being change though out the years during the builds of these motors

Unfortunately this engine has got a bad rap for dropping valve seats, not really the engines fault. I would blame it on the owner or mechanic. The cooling system needs to be properly purged of air. You cannot just simply fill up the cooling system and the reservoir and hope the air will work its way out. What happens is that air gets trapped in there around the cylinder heads causes hot spots then moves on gets cooled very quickly (expansion and contraction) as soon as coolant hits that hot spot and then this process continues and eventually you end up with a valve seat dropping. So if any work is done to the cooling system water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat Etc. The bleed screw must be removed (at the top of timing cover 8mm Allen) to let all the air Escape this can take a good ten minutes of letting the engine run at idle.

Thanks for the info. This is something I wasn't aware of. I agree that owner operator plays a big part, but there is a manufacturing flaw; The paint they used to coat the inside of the oil pan deteriorates over a few years and begins to gum up the oil pump and oil passage ways, making it harder and harder for oil to make it to the top of the engine, causing the heads to overheat while the rest of the engine is cool. Could be a combination of both?

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram with a 4.7. Drove it 250,000 miles and this just happened to me. Guess it's time to replace the engine or the truck.

My ram with the 4.7l has 273k miles on it. I didnt drive it slow and i did rev it hard a few times. Apparently long idle times will drop valve seats more than driving it hard. I got a HO from a jeep from picknpull and i am in the process of rebuilding this one to drop it into my dodge. I am trying to see what is a good rebuild kit out there? I looked thru forums and nobody really tells much apart from saying that they are rebuilding themselves the engines. No real details and no follow ups on the rebuilds. I want some info on the DNJ kits which aparently are made in china. Anyone has experience with those.? Will appreciate any input. Thanks.

My 03 Dakota has a 4.7 magnum engine as of now 236,000 miles still running strong doesn't leak and uses maybe a quart of oil in 1,500 to 2,000 miles. I have seen alot of 4.7 engine problems but to be honest I believe those problems are not a blame on the engine but neglect and abuse by the owners. That said I am thinking about just ordering me a long block replacement engine just to have as a replacement. 4x4 trucks with a crew cab even older ones are selling at ridiculous prices. My 03 with the miles on market going for $5,000. I can't afford to spend $15,000 to $20,000 to replace my 03 with something newer. I priced a Ford 09 4x4 crew cab few days ago was asking $20,000. It's just plain crazy

I have three Dodges sitting down at my shop with the 4.7 Motors and they all look like this. I never knew much about the 4.7 before people started bringing them in and I would never personally owned a Dodge 4.7 anything.
@nickflopper
@nickflopper 4 жыл бұрын
The 4.7s were not the worst engines, and I have never once seen the bottom end blow up, but there are problems with the heads. If it overheats a tiny bit, it will blow a head gasket, or drop a seat. This is because the 4.7 has a unique cooling system and people dont know how to bleed it. Mine has 224k, but I was driving (w / original water pump) and the shaft bushing failed, leaked coolant and blew at least one head gasket. It's not the engines fault in this case as the water pump had 224k on it, and it outlasted Chryslers service recommended interval by over 100k. I'm just throwing in a used engine, because mine has 224k and oil leaking out of everything oil can possibly can leak out of.

Maybe the 4.7 you and many people on the forums just had bad engines. My 4.7 has over 100k and it runs like a top. Never had any issues with it. My friend also has a 4.7 in his truck, Never had any issues either. So, its not the engine that's bad, it the people that are super hard on them that makes the engines break down.
