Doing a review on the 2002 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder. Pointing out things to look for when buying this car. It's a great and fun vehicle that will give you years of reliability. I would also like to mention that by taking the oil cap off and looking into the motor with a flashlight will give you major clues to how well the vehicle has been maintained, depending on how clean the inside is.

as these great camry's grow older, they really start to shine, compared to similar cars of the same age. our late camry LS is 13 years old now and still rides better than many new cars. and a lot smoother for sure. the camry was THE best car toyota was offering at the time, and this was before cost cutting became a major issue for them. it only really shows now, as they age, the camry ages extremely well, better than ANY other car i know of. but as with all things you value, it is important to not skip on maintenance, especially when older. these cars now frequently accumulated more than 300k miles and are still going strong - if mainained properly. just always change the enigine oil, and also DO change the transmission oil every 60k mls, and this car will run for half a million miles without major problems.

agreed that these camry's dont really come to life until they are older. this is because they are still on the road when many others of the same age aren't. it's a great vehicle for anyone looking for a reliable yet cheap way to get yourself efficiently around town or on long road trips. I love my camry and dont want to sell it

Not many can make half a million miles. A lot of Toyota engines are oil burners. My 02 Corolla made it to 223K miles before the engine was pretty much shot, and I did my oil changes on time. It had defective piston rings.

Great review, but I’d like to point out the HG issue isn’t necessarily related to poor maintenance. The head bolts didn’t go into the block deep enough and in rare cases could end up stripping the threads in the block and therefore cause catastrophic HG failure. I say rare b/c it doesn’t seem the reported cases met the materiality threshold or else Toyota would’ve been involved in a class action on these engines. Anyway I just purchased one with a 5 speed manual and about 130k. Hoping it gives me at least another 50k without anything major.

I was looking at a 2002 Toyota Camry · XLE Sedan v6 3.0l on FB market place 127,000. The guy wants $2,500 because it has hail damage. I was reading through edmunds and people loved it but I read 4 reviews about transmission issues. I'm just wondering about the v6 version of this car. Obviously doesn't get the best mileage. A couple of reviews had back brake issues.

Pretty comprehensive, Cody. Looked like the starter had been replaced. They tend to go about 120k miles. Not a huge expense. This series Camry, especially with the 2AZ-FE 4-cylinder are pretty bulletproof. I would recommend pulling the transmission dipstick and checking the color/smell of the fluid. Toyota says the fluid doesn't need replacing. I would recommend a drain and fill (3.7 qts) every 30k miles for long smooth life.
@Insanevocalists
@Insanevocalists 7 жыл бұрын
David Sparling honestly i wish i can agree. sadly these 2.4 engines went through headbolts like crazy. and and camry after this generation suffered from oil consumption problems. they're good engines, as long as you dont let them over heat. you have to be proactive with the cooling system.

I have a '03 Camry with 58K miles and has been very reliable. The drive belt broke last year and had to be replaced. Probably should have replaced it sooner since it was cracking. Since Toyota's are non-interference engine, it didn't damage the engine. Honda's use interference engnes. A few years before that the check engine came on due to a part that had gone bad and had to be replaced. These are the only 2 problems I've ever had with this car. Also, I've heard some Honda's had transmission problems.
@DaylyDriverDayly
@DaylyDriverDayly 6 жыл бұрын
A general rule of thumb is don't fix something if it isn't broken. It is true though that if the timing belt breaks while driving it can cause more severe problems in certain cases, but not all the time. These cars are truly reliable and will go hundreds of thousands of miles on the original engine and transmission. I've owned Hondas before and it is true that some specific models had transmission problems such as the odyssey and the pilot until they worked those issues out.

Yeah, I’d change a timing belt every 55k if I had 12 or more years go by since it was done. For good insurance, I just did mine on my low use 92 VW GTI 16v. It’s only been 40k but over 13 years since I did it Last. It’s interference. Too big a gamble. Even though the mechanic says it looked amazingly good.

This car is awesome. we just replace the motor mounts whhich tend to wear out, especially at this mileage. yeah but the problem with mine is braking..they are known to have spongy of faulty master cylidners which decreases brake performance. I had problems braking before and it isn't brake fluid or bleeding the brakes. Sometimes there are internal leaks in the master cylinder because I Don't see any external leaks under my car..
