Make sure the water pump is either for your Japan or American water pump, bolts wont lineup correctly if different from your make country. Good job.

Extremely helpful and instructive. Just did this today on my cl9 tsx. Made things alot easier. There is actually 7 bolts holding up the waterpump and LISTEN TO THIS GUY WHEN HE SAYS ABOUT THE NUT BEHIND THE TENSIONER BOLT ! took me 30min to get it out behind the alternator when i lost it. I just replaced the water pump in my 2004 Honda Accord. I found I did not have to remove the power steering pump or the belt tensioner assembly--but I did replace the tensioner pulley and belt while I was replacing the pump--seemed wise to do it all at the same time. The only problem I had was with the front bottom 10mm bolt. It was a bear to get out, but a breeze to put back on the new pump--I hot melt glued the 10mm bolt to my 10mm deep socket to get it started.
@NutzAboutBolts

good to know. They do sell 10mm socket with a magnet tip for those types of issues. The magnet would keep the bolts in place so it won't fall off of the socket when installing.

Hey, thanks for this video. I ran into the pump problem you were talking about. I went to OReilly's site and searched, and they have two models for the 2003 Accord EX 4 cyl: CP9434 and CP9461 . They look pretty much identical to the naked eye, but, as you said, the bolts won't line up. They are 1 or 2 millimeters further apart on the Japan one, I think. I do not have J as the first letter of my VIN (referring to your other answer), so I'm guessing I have an American built one, and CP9461 is the one that fit on mine. It's 20 dollars more :) . OReilly could use a little warning there, but I guess they don't have that level of sophistication on their website to have people input VIN. Anyway--thank you again for your video!

Reason is the Honda Accord that needs new water pump doesn’t have J in the vin number don’t recall letter , not a J . Thanks for help with this video.

I had my Accord brand new off lot with 50 miles on odometer and have used synthetic oil since day one with filer change at 5k miles so everything is exactly what came on my car except brakes, shocks and fluid these cars last long if you take care of them best $18 grand I've spent in my life

Great video. I credited you for having a great installation video on my review for the wph-054 water pump on Amazon. I have a question. When I did it, the old water pump had some crusting on the bottom part of the seal and crud was left behind on the mating surface. I used some wire brushes and "goop" adhesive remover to try to get it off. Felt fairly smooth, but was still discolored when I installed new pump. It's not leaking at this point, but I just did it yesterday. What do you use to clean the mating surfaces on the aluminum block? And how clean does it have to be? Just smooth, or absolutely shiny metal clean?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 9 жыл бұрын
David Stevenson you can just wire brush it out, it doesn't have to be aluminum clean. Just make sure there's nothing on the mating surface. The crust that was left there was from the coolant. It should be fine.

Great video; it helped me a lot. I did this on a 2006 TSX. The access to the pump bolts is terrible. It took me 1/2 day to R&R the pump. I could not torque one of the bolts. If I do this job again, I will pack the lower 3 bolt holes with grease to hold the bolts, and insert the bolts on the bench prior to the new pump install. The tensioner and pump were making noise... Your thoughts? And thanks for the vid!

NutzAboutBolts The engine purrs, just like when new. At 124K miles, the pump and tensioner bearings were worn. The belt was OK, but perhaps glazed. The very small amount of room to access the 3 lower bolts, especially the one at the right of the pump were very difficult. Perhaps there is more room on your car (Accord)? Even 1 additional inch would be doable.

@@NutzAboutBolts Finally got my daughters Honda Accord to the shop. The guy charged me $698 to pull the power steering pump, and water pump so they could drill out the broken bolts and put everything back together. Insult to injury, the heater control valve was what was causing the engine to overheat and the cooling fan to not come on, making the total price $980. I got blindsided by this guy. I'm super miffed at myself for botching this job. I've been doing my own repairs on this car, my wife's and my truck and i've never screwed up this bad. @@sgaindy3187 $980 for the garage to remove the power steering pump, alternator, to drill out the broken bolts and replace what turned out to be the heater valve that opens/closes the door for the heater coil that supplies heat to the inside car cabin. I was SUPER MIFFED at myself for about a week straight. It got fixed though, in the end. Haven’t thought about this in awhile. Slightly annoyed now lol I got back to it. Just replaced the inner and outer tie rods on my truck for both sides to get past state inspection a month ago. That wasn’t too bad. Ended up having to replace both CV shafts and sway bar links on my moms Honda Civic two weeks ago so she could pass her state inspection today. how did you diagnose the failed pump? I'm getting code p2185 (ect fan switch ). , I replaced the ect fan switch. the thermostat is supposed to open at 172℉ and the ECT fan switch closes at 199℉ . However my scanner is reading coolant temperature of over 180℉ and the lower hose isn't hot, meaning the thermostat isn't opening . I'm changing the thermostat tomorrow. I'm hoping the thermostat does the job. If it doesn't I'm probably going to change the water pump . just curious if you had the same problem?

Hello... At the beginning of your video, you stated there are two versions for the water pump---American & Japanese. Depending on where the car is assemble, that will determine which water pump you need. What would happen if the car has the wrong version installed? The reason I'm asking is, I had a water pump installed at a national repair company in Sept. 2015 with 197K miles on my vehicle. It is now August 2016 (223K miles). The same merchant is telling me I need another new water pump since the Sept2015 water pump is leaking. I have gone over the warranty mileage, they are telling me my warranty will not cover it. But I find it strange that I need another water pump when the OEM water pump that was on my car lasted for 190K miles. Since my Accord has high mileage, does the merchant's recommendation to get a new pump sound accurate?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 8 жыл бұрын
First off, I'm surprised the warranty for the water pump is out of warranty so early when water pumps are supposed to last till 120k miles or so. As for the different version of water pumps, if your vehicle is made in Japan but you got a US version water pump, the bolt holes won't match up with the engine and you won't be able to install the water pump. I'm not sure why your water pump is leaking but I'm surprised it went bad after less than 30k miles. And your car high mileage has nothing to do with the new installed water pump, unless they installed it wrong some how to cause the leak... I mean if it's leaking by the water pump, wouldn't that be their problem since they installed it last? It just sounds fishy to me.
@sherondahi11
@sherondahi11 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! I appreciate your prompt and honest reply. It sounds fishy to me also since it has only been 23,300 miles since they installed it. I am going to all their headquarters and file a complaint. I have been going to them for years and I feel like I got ripped off.

@@NutzAboutBolts the fans kick on when AC is engaged. Fans kick on when the ECT 2 wiring harness is jumped with a paper clip. They don't kick on when Coolant temp is over 210 F according to code scanner.

U should fill coolant before lowering the car. Easier to purge air out of coolant system.
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 8 жыл бұрын
? how so? I have the spill free funnel, which bleeds the air out of the system without doing anything and just wait. The only way to bleed the air out of the system faster is by reving the engine up to get the coolant to be hot to bleed all the air out.
