Күн бұрын

The methods shown in this video can be used when diagnosing network problems, although keep in mind not all networks are the same.
In this video we are working on a 2007 Audi A6, the engine is a 4.2l. There is some history with this vehicle. It was towed to a shop with an ECM "no comm" and would not start. They replaced the ECM and towed it to the dealer to have it programmed. The vehicle now starts and runs but has other faults stored that the shop wants addressed. The fault that we are addressing is stored in the Gateway module, and is 'Combination comfort bus single wire mode'. This video is in hindsight and I tried to get as close as possible as I could retracing my steps. There were some variables that changed this video and I wish I could have done it live, but in my opinion it still turned out good. I hope you guys enjoy this video and thanks for watching.

Good video … Made me smile when you mentioned wet carpets / CAN errors. Over here in UK we have lots of Audis and lots of rain. The waterproof membrane on the back of the carpet often masks the telltale ‘wet carpet’ . On A4/ A6/ Passat you can get 1/4 inch water under the carpet but dry carpet on top ! Don’t forget to clear the scuttle panel water drains before you give the car back.

Very interesting diagnosis and easy to follow with all the relevant schematics explained. The low tech approach proved to be a winner, once again. The recoding part was new and your pals at Audi were very co operative. Job well done !!

Seems like Audi’s light years ahead of gm. Gm just started mandating serial data gateway modules in 2017. I believe gm would call the comfort bus, isolated mid speed because it’s isolated from the dlc. Back probing with a scopes probably your only choice. I wonder if the comfort bus uses 2 120 ohm resistors on each end and should read 60ohms normal back probing with all components asleep. That’s cool how u could unplug most modules and not lose communication with half the modules because it’s a series parallel network vs a series network I’m used to working on. Look forward to checking out more of your data com videos. It’s good stuff. I wish you had access to a gm Mdi and data bus tool software. It virtually eliminates the need for a picoscope. Just a slower baud rate.

Great Job. I wonder could you have possibly pulled the can low splice connector and checked for a solid ground signal there at the pins and identify the grounded module?
@haywardsautomotive6156

Nice diagnosis Tom! You can also check each modules signals at the splice connector after removing the comb. Great video and info on Audi programming.
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics

I tried that. But when I disconnected the splice connector. There were no messages from the modules except the gateway
@haywardsautomotive6156
@haywardsautomotive6156 6 жыл бұрын
Yes you'd have to activate each module like the door switch module to get a signal. You can jumper the gateway low terminals at the splice and monitor the signal while you jumper the low side of each module and see which one is pulling the gateway down but you had easy access to the BCM and nailed it. Like you said you have to know how the network and how they communicate. Your videos and diagnostics are solid and it's impressive to see how fast your knowledge base is growing especially on difficult vehicles and enjoy watching your videos. You'll probably hardly ever use your Verus lab scope at least that's the way it is with me. I'll use the Pico almost all the time but it's nice to have another 4 channel scope just in case you need more that 4 channels.
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics

Ahh I see what you mean. Jump the can wires from the gateway to each module separately That would have worked. But woulda required some connection fabrication. Thanks for watching and supporting. I appreciate the compliments and tips

That can splice connector you pulled out is the most valuable tool in diagnosing these systems quickly. Can simply jump them one at a time watching your scope and then when you see the bad pattern can determine what module it is from a wiring diagram. Works great especially with so many modules and many that are difficult to get to. This video should explain better. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrRdrc9805uvgqM.html

Hi did you try to remove the components protection with a VCDS ? Because I replace a couple of confort module on a MK 6 golf and I was able to unlock the modules I can’t remember what it was called but I was able to recode the module it was a long code type but if the module wasn’t unlocked if I remember right the remote would not work or something else.

Hi Dan! Would be nice if there was a way to identify modules via the CAN signal (just like syncing a relative compression waveform with an ignition signal) that could have pointed out that module before the signal was shorted (just had that missing packet)... rather than having to disconnect one at a time. With full short up or down, identification obviously can't be done. There must be some kind of communication order... if there is, then disconnecting any 1 module (and knowing what the order is) could help determine which one was missing. I have no CAN / LIN experience, so I have no idea if it's possible... they probably don't all stay awake the same length of time.
@Diagnosedan
@Diagnosedan 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas, of couse when the comm.wire shorts out no communication is possible. But indeed when there were only messages missing from a certain module the other modules can indentify that module. Sometimes you'll get a code like; Missing message from instrument cluster. / Sender Intrument cluster-receiver Gateway (Example). But this varies by, Brand/Vehicle age/ system. When no such codes are stored, i know of no other way than the way Thommy did this one. Unfortunately some modules are hard to reach and this method can be time consuming especially when it's intermittend😥

Once you disconnect the splice comb you can check CAN hi & lo from the terminals and check each modules signals vs. disconnecting each module only sometimes you have to be a contortionist and it's easier to disconnect. For the modules that are hard to access it's easier at the splice...sometimes.

Single wire mode in this case means that the network is only communicating on one wire. I don't believe this vw/Audi specific. Lin bus is a single wire network but that's how it was designed.

Great video. Can you tell us more about the "component protection". Is this feature on every brand new AUDI control unit? It is mandatory to be removed before coding, no? and why is it there in the first place. Thank you sir.

mike roy hey buddy component protection is Audi’s attempt at forcing the user to buy only new parts. They are increasing the amount of parts that they try to block us from changing with known good used parts. @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 6 жыл бұрын
You can still install a used module and code it. So you don't absolutely have to buy a brand new module. And apparently you need a factory tool to remove it. So even if you install it at home you still have to take it to the dealer to have it removed.

@therivalryan 5 жыл бұрын
Component protection is 7 bytes programmed to the new module, this is vin specific, it is in the ECU, key and a number of other modules on this model. You can program used parts with ODIS also once the original vin of that part has not been changed the CS can then be accessed via GeKo and rewritten. VCDS does not support component protection on any module on any VAG.
