Did a teardown and failure analysis on my shop truck, found a lifter roller had pitting and stuck, ruining the camshaft.
I will do a follow up video when the truck is back on the road, thanks for watching.
I created this video and I own all rights to all content in the video.

My 2015 6.2 Silverado LTZ lifters on cylinders 4 and 7 just collapsed 117k miles. Sounded like a bad ujoint to me. Anyhow dealer wanted 8k dollars to put afm lifters back in. I'm doing a full afm delete myself for less than 2k bucks. BTR cam, ls7 style lifters all gaskets. Refreshing the heads too , like yours the cylinder wall look good , but on DI engines carbon builds up on intake valves , so will be cleaning them and new valve stem seals too. Will be watching your progress. 👍👍

Same issue just recently happened to my 08 Chevy Suburban 5.3 L. but on 6 cylinder intake lifter. It collapsed and caused that same looking scrape on the cam. I'm in process of doing same type of work. Thanks for the video.

I'm not surprised about the condition of your your cylinders. High nickel block, forged piston with a chrome ring. Plenty of miles left on yours. The camshaft, not surprised either. You can chase theories around the beer keg all night if you want. I assure you not the first trashed camshaft I've ever seen. I have, literally, piles of used-up roller cams and lifter assemblies. Bottom line is it needs replaced. Nice video. Well thought out and informative.

Dang D-Ray thats alot of work! Should be a new truck by the time you get done. I hope I never have that kind of problems. Sounds like a $2000 fix for me. I can do small stuff but thats waaay out of my league. At least your doing the smart way replacing everything while it is tore down. Was glad to see you posted a new video, kinda missing your "how to" stuff. I learn alot from watching you. Thanks for all your videos.

Could the reason for this happening be because of the Advanced Fuel Management System? I've seen on some KZfaq videos that switching back and forth from 8 cylinder to 4 cylinder will eventually cause this kind of problem.

Did you have any waving/wondering or gradual motions of oil pressure on the gauge? Like pressure sitting normal at hot idle then starts wandering down low towards 20psi then waves back up normal, may also bounce up much higher towards 60 or 80psi for a split second.

nice video. A couple of questions: 1. What if someone were to do nothing in this situation. How long do you suppose it would take before the cylinder failed completely? 2. What would it be like if only the lifter was replaced, and not the camshaft? 3. My truck, 2006, only has about 150,000 miles. Seems like short mileage for lifter failure. Are the performance differences between roller lifters and the older hydraulic lifters substantial enough to justify the risks of this failure. This is a common failure, I'm finding out, and you installed 16 new lifters, the odds of another roller failure might not be favorable.

how do you like that custom grind cam? I work at a gm dealer and have seen this not only on LS engines but other engines with roller lifters as well. Usually only 1 lifter and does ruin cam. Funny thing is when gm changed from flat tappet to roller tappet it was supposed to fix all those issues. Good videos keep em coming

@donrutter6765
@donrutter6765 6 жыл бұрын
What you are going to run into soon is low oil pressure. What happens is the rubber o-ring dries out in the oil pump where the oil pickup goes in. Instead of just using the o-ring, I cleaned off the joint real good and used a little silicone too. Whats even better is to use JB weld because it will never suck air again and cause low oil pressure. This 50 cent o-ring is responsible for a lot of motors having lifter noise and destroying motors.

You don't have to take the heads off to change the cam on a LS because of the keepers, which is cool. You do have to take them off to replace the lifters, which isn't.

What do you think causes these cam and lifter problems? Obviously you take great care of your truck, so it is not lack of oil changes. Is it just a defect? Our family owns 3 cars with the LS engines, Sierra, Yukon, and a Monte Carlo.

My teacher explained it to me as the way gm grinds there cams is its a long duration and then they slam the valve shut because they have to meet emissions. When you slam the valve shut the lifters bounce up and down on the cam and flat spots on the rollers and cam occur. All ls motors have this problem and comp cams makes a kit that will fix this for good.

Why not reuse the head bolts? Is it because of fatigue due to the heat..? Just wondering.. Thanks .. Your videos are all great !! The 3 wheeler video got me hooked on your channel.. Your an awesome mechanic!
@schigara
@schigara 8 жыл бұрын
+Vdubin64 The majority of head bolts for the last 2-3 decades have been and are torque to yield bolts also known as "stretch bolts". Once they are torqued the first time, they should not be reused or re-torqued as they are likely to cause a new head gasket to fail.

I need some advice. I have a 2007 Avalanche with 115K miles. Got stabililink and traction control lights combined with a bad miss. Code reader says misfire on #7. I suppose there could be a bad lifter and/or cam or AFM cylinder deactivation solenoid. I fear that it's going to end up being an engine teardown. If so, I think I would prefer putting it back together with regular roller lifters and simply chuck the cylinder deactivation system altogether. I also pull a boat. Other than having to fork out large bills for the parts and the actual work involved in tearing it down, what sort of drama should I expect? How difficult is it to convert an LS from AFM to all cylinders, all the time? What about reflashing the ECM to work without AFM? Do you happen to have any contact info for the cam guy in Louisiana? Thank you in advance.
@JimmyLorimer

Hey Steven, I just had the exact same thing happen to my 2007 Avalanche, with just 98k miles on it, and I also tow a boat. It would be really helpful to know what you found was the problem with yours.... , and what was done to correct it. And I also would be interested to know if you were able to deactivate the AFM, and if you recommend doing that. Thanks!

That's sort of always been the deal with GM. If you have a Ford, all the stuff on the outside of the engine fails while the engine itself keeps going strong. If you have a GM, that stuff is a little bit more dependable but the engine itself is more likely to have internal issues that are major things to fix. I've had American cars since around 1971. Since I tend to drive older ones, that means that they went all the way back to flatheads.
