This was Peugeot Sport's first Le Mans effort since the end of the Peugeot 905 project in 1993. It won 19 from the 28 races in which it raced between 2007 and 2010
The Peugeot 908 made its race debut at the opening round of the 2007 Le Mans Series season, the 1000km of Monza.
They finished 1st and 3rd in that race.
After that came numerous other wins with the overall win at the 2009 24h of Le Mans being the most famous.
New 2011 Le Mans Prototype regulations rendered the first-generation 908 obsolete.
Peugeot began development of a new prototype, known as the 90X, in late 2009. Officially unveiled on 3 February 2011 at the French manufacturers’ signature store on the Champs-Élysées, the new 908 is similar in design to the 908 HDi FAP but includes larger front wheels, a roof scoop and different bodywork. The V12 was replaced with a 3.7 litres (230 cu in) V8 that remains diesel-fueled. However, Oreca continued to run with the old 908 HDi FAP in 2011.
In January of 2012 Peugeot suspended its endurance racing program with immediate effect due to financial problems. At the time of the shock announcement, the team's mechanics were already in Sebring preparing for a test session.

What a lot of people don't realize is that diesel-powered cars like this one are actually very well suited for endurance racing.

One of the best picks for endurance racing is a diesel engine. They're the most efficient in high RPMs, and they have gobs of torque. They're typically heavier, but that's a decent tradeoff for the performance one gets long term from a properly tuned diesel

@Arthur Monbaron diesels are known for torque, not power. Everything is up in the top end, because they're typically boosted with turbos. NA diesels exist, but they're known for being low power. NA diesels are great for longevity, though, as they only make enough torque to get out of their own way and putter along. You'll see lots of NA diesels like IDIs go for a million miles and tens of thousands of hours

jack coffey Well I guess diesel cars use less fuel due to their higher compression and rev range, so they’d be ideal for an endurance event

@@SigorusTV they had a massive advantage on engine size and turbo pressures. the only car that could even keep up on the straights was the v12 aston, which only could run that engine becuase it was street derived. but it still couldnt accelerate as well as the diesels. just different class of HP.

@@SigorusTV Diesel engines have 2 to 3 times higher compression ratio than comparable gasoline engines because they need high pressure to ignite fuel as there is no spark plug in the cylinder.

Loved this car, as well as Audi diesels... For what they've stand for. Diesel's can race. And they both entered in F1 performance that others after them, perfected. Actual LeMans cars, since this battle between Audi and Peugeot, are real technical masterpieces (they always were, is true, but that finesse it's outstanding)

I hate to break it to you but the quali lap record (5 seconds faster then the Peugoet) is held by a 2.4 Liter Turbo Hybrid Petrol, which has a cool 1000hp... and the racelap record (2 secs faster then the Peugoet) is held by a 4.0 Liter Turbo Diesel V6 Hybrid which has about 900hp. Also: in the time this Peugoet Takes from corner exit at Armage to 250 kph the Hybrids have broken the 300 kph Mark. This car Was developed for 2007... give it a break...

Just FYI: the official numbers for Power of those cars are understated. According to the ACO 2010s Audis had just under 750hp and the Peugoet a little over 750. In Qualy both could run over 800hp.

Sorry can't agree. With the restrictor plates and boost limitations it is very hard to get more HP just like that. And looking at the acceleration zones vs top speed and aero configuration Peugeot had just over 700HP and Audi about 670HP or even less. And in race they had same top speed and laptime like in qualy. Don't get into this traditional HP increase of race cars that retired. I see that a lot to Mazda 787, Mclaren MP4/4 and so on.

@vonPelger You are wrong. The Le Mans Technology Magazin issue from 2010 and Racecar engineering both calculated those power numbers. And with very good reason. You could yourself if you just go by the cylinder pressure, which is quite easy to figure out. So are quite wrong on that front. Also: the Diesel LMPs accelerated faster and reached higher topspeeds then any F1 car between 2009 and 2010. So just by that alone we can conclude that they have a fair bit over 700hp and probably closer too 800. Also: the power numbers that are published about a racecar at the time are absolute bullshit. It is realistic to asume those numbers are at least 20% too low. Even in 2006 the R10 ran higher topspeeds then anybody else in LMP 1, while running a HDF Aero kit in Le Mans. So you can assume, that even back then the Diesels had at least 50hp over the Judds and the other petrols.

@@TheNecromancer6666 i don't rely only on official statements. like i said aero trim, acceleration zones and top speed help very good in these calculations. As of cylinder pressure: how does one really know the exact figures here? No LMP even diesels accelerated faster then F1 from 2009 and 2010 because that cars have in the region of 600kg and the LMP 1000kg with driver. Top speed they had it higher because aero drag, wheels covered help a lot. Event so those F1 had over 340km/h in Monza without slipstream. What did Technology Magazin issue from 2010 and Racecar engineering say about the HP? I don't know about these reviews.

I got to watch these glorious beasts at Sebring and Petit Le Mans when they were racing. Super fast! That 700hp figure is very conservative, probably more like 750-800.

Of course that motor is probably more capable of that but they have a strict limit for horsepower and torque at Le Mans and other racing competitions if that motor wasn't detuned it most likely can do over 1,000 hp easily for torque, probably almost or over 2,000 fr lbs

For a Peugoet diesel race car a quad over head cam quad turbo v16 diesel hybrid sounds better not only would it make a lot of power since diesels and electric motors both make a lot of torque it would be a beast

They rev lower, also turbo suppress alot of exhaust sound. Thats why it is quiet, but this thing is fast, silent killer.
