This is one for the books. 2011 Nissan Sentra with a P0101 Mass Air Flow code. The dealer already took a shot at this one and it threw me for a loop as well. The fix turned out to be easy but the theory behind it was the key.

Keep in mind, there are many reasons for that P0101. But making sure to use an OE filter and secure the holder is a good first step.

A fleet shop i worked at on E vans had to switch to motorcraft filters for the same reason the cheap filters set fuel trim codes, great fix Corey!

I just happened upon your video after my sons 2011 Sentra threw the same code. One of the metal clips on air box was gone and other one was rusty and loose. Fingers crossed this is the fix for us also!

thanks. a few years ago i had a 2001 dakota V6. my mechanic put a new engine in. cant get it to run right. my mechanic said it was my after market air cleaner. but it wasnt. so i started tinkering with it. after some adjustments on the TB RESISTOR. it ran better. then i sold it to my son.

Thank you for your reply my car run perfectly but the engine light is on three weeks ago I bought 3 hitachi mass airflow sensor 179.00 Dollar each from O’Reilly auto part they all three it doesn’t fix a problem I got one mass airflow sensor from Nissan dealer for 239.00 dollars I put it in the second day the engine light come on as I said the car run perfectly before and after only the engine light doesn’t go away thank you for your reply

So when I found your video I said finally a 2011 nissan just like what I’m working on. With the same exact code same issue. However my air filter box has the clips. Been chasing this code for 2 days now 🙄 also have already replaced the MAF as well. The only thing I can think of is maybe it needs to be a OEM MAF. All values are fine with scanner. Runs and drives great. All wiring from ecm to MAF sensor are good. No resistance, no shorts or opens. So frustrating! lol I can’t wait til I figure it out! I literally have about 7.5 hours of hands on diag in this car right now!

I would also check and replace the air filter with OE. Some of the aftermarket ones dont seal right and can create some turbulence from the air leaking around the seal. Keep us posted on what you find. Thanks

I'm having the same exact issue with my 2011 nissan. I have both clips, Replaced the MAF sensor and air filter and check engine light continues to pop up. Was told that the dealer may need to "reset" this. Not sure what to do. Was hoping you had figured this one out.

@@angelramos4268 I did figure it out. The missing clip was the problem with this one. Why did you replace the MAF? Was the other one bad? What tests did you run? VE test? I'd like to help, but I would need more information.

@ angel ramos I ended up replacing the ECM and it fixed the problem. Also there is a technical service bulletin out for this issue. If you have a certain part number on your ECM the coincides you will need a ECM flash.

did you checked the fresh air hose for cracks , cuz what you were doing it seems that the fresh air hose its crack open,

Hey man!!! Thank you for this video!!! While I write this comment, I have yet to apply this fix. I have a 2012 Nissan Frontier (4 liter). I am missing a retaining loop (mine has loops) and my truck runs slightly erratic, intermittently shifts oddly. I have already replaced air filter, cleaned throttle body, and put brand new MAF sensor in. I am going to try this zip tie fix. Hopefully it helps my situation out. Whether this works for me or not, I still really appreciate the tip to try.

Unfortunately, thats not enough information. Full health scan with a compatible scan tool should be the first move. Not a quick scan from Autozone. Let me know

I have the 2 clips but I can still see the orange part of the air filter. Could that be a problem ? It's not closing all the way.

Stick to the dealer filter. Some application it's normal to see part of the filters edge

What tests have you done. The P0101 is not a crank sensor code. So, forgive me if I'm confused. Why did you change it?

No guessing. The clips are just a common oversight and critical to proper air flow. Beyond that, scan data is going to be the way to go. Fuel trims, MAF readings, V.E. testing, etc. Usual suspects are (but not limited too), MAF, throttle body and proper air flow. Let me know how you make out

P codes identify the same across all brands. That's the purpose of them. No mystery here. Maybe you need to find a new shop to troubleshoot.

these nissans are very picky i have one had to replace the intake boot and then had a crack in the intake towards to engine which messed with airflow...crazyness

Very cheap poor fitting air filters, mis- aligned lower center air box hinge (frontier, old pathfinders, xterra's, armadas, Titans, NV's), missing air box clips (versa, sentra) and ripped intake boots (murano, sentra, versa) will all cause that p0101 DTC. What ends up happening is someone replaces the MAF with an aftermarket MAF than they can never get the DTC to go away because most of the time the aftermarket MAF makes a bad situation worst. Newer Altimas its a PCV updated PCV valve and reprogram (TSB for it) to fix the P0101.... Ohhh dirty and sticking throttle bodies will also give you this DTC, they stick closed from carbon build up, clean it good and make sure it doesnt stick in any direction, Manually push the plate both directions it should not stick.

I think you about covered it all my friend. Most of which is overlooked. Agreed on the aftermarket MAF causing additional problems. Ironically, the vehicle is coming in again for a MIL light. It'll be interesting to see what for this time.
