Here is part 2. I tried to cover off more of a feature demonstration in this video. I could do the same sort of video for my RT, but, aside from the switchgear, many of the attributes are the same.

Many thanks for a detailed and real world description of the pros and cons of the K1600. Road tests aren't quite as subjective as your videos. After three K100RT's I'm now in the position to buy a modern BMW and have been torn between the sensible option, the R1200RT, and the K1600GT. Your videos have been a great help in helping me to decide which to go for. Still keeping the old K100RT though.

Test riding a K1600GT tomorrow! Sat on one today in the showroom and was surprised how easily I could get my feet flat on the ground. Only be about 11C in the morning so I'll be trying out the heated grips and seat. Thanks again for the comprehensive description.

Thanks for the review. Small correction, not all previous bikes have shafts on right side, just the R series and some old K's. All K12 after year 2006 and K13's are left hand "shafted".

Thanks for the great review. Have you done any 2-up riding? I am in between this one and the GTL but would prefer the GT if the passenger is comfortable.

ahh .. i struggled with the same decision. The RT still has a quality and I still love them. I am looking forward to the new model. As far as the old K100-- well, lets face it, that is an icon of sport tourers. They are becoming rarer by the year.. you are wise not to sell it.

Hi. I'm just starting to save for one of these (going to take at least 2 years going on current 2nd hand values in the uk) and your videos are getting me more and more excited (Was going to be an RT then thought if I can save for one I can save for the other lol) Quick question, is there a sub model I want to look out for that has every option available, including audio/gps etc. On the UK market we have the K1600GT (base), the K1600GT SE and the K1600GT LE. I'm not sure what the differences are between the SE and LE. Thanks for the awesome videos that are going to inspire me to keep strong when I get tempted by lesser bikes ;)

I have never heard of a GT LE (however, there is an RT LE...)-- the SE model in the UK is simply a package of options for a value pricing model. The options are available individually in most other markets. Good luck-- I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the review. Can you comment on the 2012 K1600GT vs th'13? I'm looking at a used 2102 model - not from a dealer but private party.

to the best of my knowledge, there is no difference between the two model years. BMW is currently upgrading software in both years as they come in for service.

How do you charge and maintain the battery? Do you use BMW charger (or is it okay to use third party chargers, such as Optimate 4)? I wish if you make a video on how to take care of the bike during the winter. Thanks Chris..

I chose an Optimate 4 by Tecmate and prefer to hook the charger directly to the battery using one of the supplied wires with the charger. The BMW charger uses a Powerlet connector to plug into the accessory port. That sounds easier than hooking up wires to the battery but my dealer actually advised against it and suggested i buy the tecmate. They claim they have had problems with the BMW chargers losing connection in the accessory port after a few minutes. I argued that BMW on line claims that doesn't happen, but their real world experience is otherwise. I took their advice and have had great luck. Mine works great. Plus I own several bikes , and can use the Optimate on those as well. Regarding winter prep -- I don't get as fussed as i did when i was young. Nowadays I simply ensure; 1) it is Clean and polished top to bottom 2) its tires are pumped to normal pressure 3) on its center stand 4) fluids are topped up 5) if a service is due i conduct it before the winter 6) i charge the battery on the tecmate over night every 2 or 3 weeks 7) i remove the ipod and Nav 8) I put a soft blanket on the bike or a cover 9) i keep it away from sources of wind ,salt and water -- so it essentially sits in a quiet corner in my garage. That's it -- I will be riding in March, and I park in January, so my winter is short from a riding perspective.

Thanks Chris... I truly appreciate you for taking time to explain this in detail. After reading your comments, I have ordered 'Tecmate 4 Dual Program Batter Charger for BMW CANbus' ($80.95 from Revzilla). Great reviews on that product. To be honest, there are not many videos on K1600GT maintenance in youtube than the ones that you have posted. Watched many of them more than once. Thanks again for your efforts. Drive safe.. Blessings
