( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2013 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab Heavy Duty Pickup is built to tow. So we decided to try to tow with it up one of the steepest and highest American Highways. From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the most powerful of pickups. Is the Ram 3500 Heavy duty up to the task of towing a 17,000 pound horse trailer to the top of the tunnel.
In fact according to Ram this diesel mobster dually with 850 lb-ft or torque can tow up to 30,000 pounds. That's enough weight to need a commercial truckers license in most states. In this first TFLtruck Ike Gauntlet video review we weight the truck and trailer and test the 2013 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab to see how fast it will pull a 17,000 pound horse trailer from 0-60 MPH with the help of our friend Kent from ( www.MrTruck.com ).

The trailers have brakes which are electronically controlled by a brake controller in the truck. You used to have to buy an aftermarket brake controller and install it into the truck, but recently the trucks have come with a brake controller as a factory option.

it's because the thinner air means the compressor wheel can't pull the same volume of air causing a reduction in power. it's easy to tell the difference elevation has on modified diesels as they can start to haze as they go down the road indicating the engine isn't receiving as much air as it needs

Rob Rahmlow If I were you bud, I would go with the Ram 3500 with the 6.7L Inline-6 Cummins diesel. Not for the brand, for the engine. Straight cylinder engines (not in a V8 configuration like the Powerstroke and Chevrolet/GMC Duramax) are far more better for towing due to the engine being balanced, not too mention less moving parts in the Cummins (2 less cylinders, 1 less set of valve terrain). Cummins cylinder blocks are made of cast iron, where as Powerstroke is aluminium. Another reason I'd go with Cummins, is a 2014 Ford F-450 (one ton and a quarter) Dually Diesel V8 Powerstrroke max tourqe is 860, where as the 2014 Ram 3500 (one ton) Dually Straight 6 makes 865 (one class of lighter truck, 2 less cylinders and more tourqe then one class up of truck) Hope this helps, bud!

Hey Rob, sorry for the late reply. Been offline the past few days. I would go with the 2012 Ram 3500. 2012 is the last year before Ram added the use of DEF (diesel exauste fluid) in their trucks to comply with the emission laws in diesel trucks. Before they went with DEF, Ram simpley added more Catalitic converters to their exaust systems. The diesel exaust fluid systems, DPF (diesel paticular filters) are what i notice is the cause of why more and more newer trucks are ending up in the shop. And when these systems fail, they can cause tens of thousands of dollars in engine repairs. Ford Powerstrokes seem to be having the most problems with the emmisioon control systems, General Motors emmision systems seem reliable, as well as in the new Ram 2500's and up. Hope this helps with deciding your purchase bro. I know its not a cheap one at all. Any other questions feel free to ask. Hope to hear from you soon!

Yeah I been looking at the pricing and I went with the 6.7 power stoke 2011 for 35k but after everything is said and done the total will be 29k man so and plus it's a v8 more power man but you know I went what I could afford and it's a f350 dually crew cab everything all their for the 5th hook up add a ball and the electric is already their too and it's already have a spray in bed liner to for the price of 29k man for a 2011 lariat package with the center counsel and the navigation system and pack up camera and the in board dash monitor man I'm really exited about the new truck man but it doesn't have 4wd but I went with the great price and the features and what I could afford also man so I didn't lose to much but I never gotten stuck or anything with a 2wd so it doesn't bother me much their but thank you for you information and videos will be coming probably next weekend when I get it man thanks man

Thats not a bad deal, bro! If the state or provence you live in doesnt have emmision laws I would siggest removing the DPF and put a straight pipe on it. and if you donmt like the straight pipe sound put a muffler on it. That way you wont have any problems with the DPF which alot of newer Powerstrokes have. And 2WD isnt bad if you dont taKe your truck offroading or anything like that. Cant wait to see trhe new rig!

Owen Cummings, your WRONG!! in WW2 Germany had a reconnaissance aircraft the Junkers Ju 86 powered by the Jumo 205 supercharged diesel engines, and flew OVER 50,000 ft, so your statement of "diesels have a hard time at altitude" doesn't hold ANY water...

thats interesting about the junkers bomber didnt know that, but yea what he said may be true but its all out the window with a turbo on it anyhow, the engine makes its own atmospheric pressure, hopefully he sees this thanks to stupid youtube i cant reply directly to him

That could be true in smaller cars. For trucks I'm torn on that fact since improving suspension and brakes don't really improve towing. Plus diesels tend to have a harder time generating RPM's and throwing a turbo on makes it easier to drive on the freeway. Plus low pressure turbo's add a great mix of performance and economy. For cars though I feel like NA would be the best way to go in order to keep all the other elements in check and balanced.

@AB-80X
@AB-80X 10 жыл бұрын
travis8352 The thing is that something does not add up for a 4.10. I got a '13 3500 dually with the Aisin and 4.10 rear. During this test, at some point, you see the speedo showing 55 mph and the tach 2500 in 3rd. My truck in that gear at those rpms read about 45. If one does the math on the 3rd gear ratio which is 1.34 it adds up nicely. My speedo is off about 5-6% and my gps shows 43 mph @ 2500 rpm. A truck with a 3.42 should run 52 @ 2500 rpms. My guess is that they are off about the same, so 55 is pretty much dead on for a 3.42 rear. That's a bad comparison between other trucks. The others have had 4.10's and 4.30's. It's bad form doing the test like this. A 3.42 3500 dually has a GCWR which is much lower than the 37000 lbs for the 4.10. I think they are very biased if you ask me.
@davin1337
@davin1337 10 жыл бұрын
ABOlsen69666 They actually can come with 3 rear ends, 3.42 is standard. 4.10 is an option along with 3.73. This definitely did NOT have the 4.10. It sounds like mine does pulling a 4 car trailer which is about 19k pounds and I have a 2014 with the 3.42. The rated towing on the 4.10 is 29K pounds but the 3.42 drops all the way down to 23k which would explain it struggling up the steep grade on top of the 2.5 mile high elevation. Also this guy should be using the tiptronic manual shifting both up and down the hill to fully utilize the power band and exhaust brake. Should be a no brainier on every test but half the things these two were talking about sounds like its coming from someone that's never worked under a hood in their life...

isn't the psi on most diesel engines around like 40? The 01 cobra is pos its not even supercharged...if it was though they only run around 12-15 psi right? Diesels are far more efficient I have a 519 rwhp 05 gto which is bored and stroked and a 08 dodge 2500 I spent far more money to get the 519 rwhp than I did on my dodge which with exhaust intake and chip is pushing somewhere in the 450 to 500 range.. I get 17 mpg in the car and 24 mpg in the truck...pretty obvious which is more efficient...

Turbocharged engines just don't lose power at the same rate as NA engines, but it has nothing to do with poor engineering. It takes quite a bit of engineering along with turbo development to find a package that can work well in most places, but there is no magic bullet. Some of NASA's own atmospheric test planes had three turbochargers to compensate for elevation.

The2001cobra You sir are just plain ignorant, diesel engines are built on the principle of getting as much air into an engine as possible. Turbo diesel engines are far more efficient than gasoline engines. For example, the engine in a 2001 cobra is a 4.6 DOHC, with 325hp and 315 tq iirc. In a car that weighs roughly 3500lbs you can probably get 22-23 mpg. In comparison the 5.9 cummins in my 06 dodge makes 325hp and 610tq stock. And weighs just a little over 7200 lbs and I consistently get 19-21

Everything has a hard time with elevation not just diesels hell even nature does go run a mile in Denver and then Houston! Air is thinner all combustion or oxygen intake will be harder with elevation. It has nothing to do with injectors firing it has to do with the lack of oxygen LOL. Dump all the fuel you want if the stoichiometry isn't right the computer is going to trim back injector open time and cut fuel down to correct stoichiometry.

Still loose power regardless of boost for 1 simple fact air is thinner in elevation which means 16psi in Denver is going to yield less power than 16psi in Houston. Engines are just air pumps in need of oxygen ignitable fuel and a detonation method a power adder simply allows more atmosphere to be ingested than in NA form it doesn't make atmosphere power adders are a solution to poor engineering just a way to cut costs.

Turbocharged engines loose way more power than an NA motor does in atmospheric changes. Nasa comparison cannot even be compared to automotive nasa tests in the stratosphere where a vehicle is only travel around 14K feet max. where nasa test and works 50K-160K feet up at the poles its around 30k far cry from automotive engineering and testing.

he explained why about halfway through, the trailer is designed to be balanced when loaded so with no load in the back all the load is on the front which makes the truck squat more, ive messed with em all growing up on a farm and i like ford and dodge but been my experience that it usually takes a little more to make a dodge squat then a ford idk why and id trust both with heavy loads just noticed that in the past
@guitarpro48
@guitarpro48 10 жыл бұрын

thomas H maybe its just ours then idk, all i know is my cousin has 2 f250s one 2012 and one 2007 and both squat more then my 2000 dodge 2500 when hooked to the same trailer the 2012 actually squatting the most, like i said all 3 are nice trucks and both fords are no where near their bump stops, its just something ive noticed
@guitarpro48
@guitarpro48 10 жыл бұрын
idk i guess so lol we use the work trucks that ford designed and nothing pulls like them ive noticed, they have stronger leaf springs in the back to keep it from squatting, im talking about like 02/03 f250s not the new ones, the new ones do have a tendency to squat but they fixed that with the 2013 cause in 2010-2012 they were more focused on fuel economy the how it pulls trailers, at least thats what ive noticed
@sstroh08
@sstroh08 10 жыл бұрын
thomas H well that makes sense why the 2012 one squats more, as far as pulling goes mine for sure pulls the best [not really fair though seeing as how its a turned up diesel and the others are gassers], the 2012 ford has a 6.2L v8 and is pretty damn good for a gasser but still nowhere near mine, it also drives the nicest has really easy steering but it has seemed to develop a dead spot in the middle now that it has 60000 miles on it [we use the hell out of em lol] my dodge has a similar dead spot too but has 212000 miles on it now too so i guess thats to be expected, i also really like how you can manually shift the automatic kinda neat and useful when towing, the 07 ford has the 5.4 v8 and its a turd lol but the truck does drive nice has good steering also although not quite as silky smooth as the 2012 ford, we dont tow much with it anymore because the other two tow better and the trans is on its way out too it will slip over half throttle always especially when in high gears it has 120000 miles on it its towed over 16000lbs of corn several times though and that may be the cause of it, we reserve those for my truck now lol

Power adding is a solution to poor engineering. The motor can't do it in NA form so instead of dumping millions into research and development manufacturers simply add a power adder to compensate. Anytime your forcing something to do something it was never intended too you are compensating for the lack of ability in that item from an overclocked processor to a forced inducted motor your compensating for lake of engineering in a form to make it more capable.

Nope, wrong in every way. NA and supercharged engines lose power at the same rate for a given altitude. A turbocharged engine loses power at only a percentage of an NA due to the fact that a turbo compresses air, making up for some of the lack in oxygen. A NASA aircraft can be compared because it used a piston driven engine, identical to every other engine. I have a feeling you're about 16 and have conversations with people your age only..get some experience.
@bptryp
@bptryp 10 жыл бұрын
Poor engineering my ass. It IS engineering. You don't think they would dump millions into research? GM spent over $100 million in the transition from LT1 to LS1. Get a clue kid. And you're not forcing an engine to do anything it wasn't designed to, as factory turbocharged engines are built handle it. That's part of engineering. If you think you can get an NA engine to compensate for altitude without a turbo, you are on another planet.
