( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2014 Ram 3500 HD Dually is built to tow 28,000 pounds. That's a lot of weight to tow. In another TFLtruck extreme towing test we see just how well the 2014 Ram 3500 HD Dually can tow when loaded down with not one but two trailers up the Ike Gauntlet HD.
The Ike Gauntlet is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. Check out this promo for what's coming up soon on The Fast Lane Truck.

I like these Ike Gautlet tests, seems like a pretty legitimate way of testing a truck under extreme conditions, I mean, with the road grade, the thinner air, and the weight. The time it takes to get up dosen t seem so relevant as they are all trucks and will probably do it in similar times and lets be honest, they are trucks not Ferraris. Getting the feedback as to how the truck feels is and behaves is great info!

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD with the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine is paired to the 3.73. I imagine that it was a simple error since it was put "3.37". Great job, Ram.

Great video TFLTruck. Loud engine cooling fan and anyone see the coolant temp. gauge, its way past the half way mark at the top of the gauntlet. Reminds me of I-5 in northern California hauling 44k pounds in a Freightliner.

One correction. You don't have to have a CDL to tow that much weight. You have to have a CDL to tow that much weight for profit (commercially). Recreationally, you don't need a CDL. Very common misconception.

+threefortyduster CDL is a federally issued/controlled license. It does "vary by state" but if you are doing this for your farm or RV or private practices, no cdl is required. Reguardless what the road pirates try to tell you. I haul 3 race cars, personally and have been told I need a CDL about 50 times so far, been to court a few times, ALL times i have been cleared and charges dropped. As soon as I "haul a race car for a friend" for cash or parts, I am commiting a commercial activity and need a CDL. My wife and son sometimes drive my rig on the straights and plains for experience. Same for them.

I know this refers to gas not a cummins, but I don't know why anyone could say rams are shitty because they now have an 8 speed tranny that is the best on the market, air suspension, the nicest interior by far, and obviously have great engines with their hemi (don't believe me just watch these guys made of the ram, ford, tundra, and chevy half tons all going up this same incline) the ram wins. Whether you want to believe it or not, ram is up at the top for quality now. Ford and GM both are older corporations, there for they will always have more trucks sold due to brand loyalty. Rams are actually outselling gm trucks where I live and increase there numbers every day. All in all the big 3 all make good trucks, but ram in my opinion is the best. I have driven all 3 of the newest models as well (neighbor/best friends dad is the largest ford and GM dealer in the Midwest, and some family friends own a ram dealership)

I have been pulling my toy hauler around with the same truck but with the Limited adition & absolutely love it. I went to the auto shows for the new Chevy but ended up with a new Ram. The Ram is a real HD truck and better built in my opinion. You could have gotten a better time had you dropped the transmission into 5th gear. The transmission will not hold the rpm's, it likes to down shift to stay into the peak torque range but if you down shift into 5th it would have pulled 65 or more all the way up that mountain. My truck doesn't have the rear air assist and it doesn't bounce like this but the water may have had something to do with that.

that the way mine is. 5th wheel camper is around 14500 and I can run up it at 60 mph in 5th gear. 6th gear its weird, it don't downshift on me, it bogs me down...but 5th gear fantastic. and its Laveta Pass in CO for all y'all that are in the CO area

Nathan definitely started the timer while the truck was still pulled over just starting to move off the shoulder, they chevy held a higher speed up the hill the whole time, the rams advantage came from the timer start at the beginning for sure.

As always, that's a good test and review of the truck's capabilities. You mentioned that this truck had the air/leaf spring hybrid suspension. Do you plan on doing a review of the suspension in the near future? Seems to me that there wasn't much of a ride difference when fully loaded. But what about empty, driving around town?

i call them to do the rolling start to 65 or to whatever speed they started the time at and add that onto the total time! that and one thing to remember Gm will be answering to the lack of torque even tho this gets the job done:) i can see 875 or 900 coming in the new duramax:) my question is if the truck seemed to struggle some with only 19k, what about the max rating...? the rolling start for SURE made a huge diff in time by for sure 30 seconds! i say Gm did it faster myself, and the sound of a turbo in a cummins just annoys the hell out of me. in the end tho the trucks ALWAYS get the job done they run the sametimes, just pick whatever you like, myself i like the chev because of the ride and the new cab design. 11k for that set up!?!?! Wow amazing... same MPG as the duramax im being picky.

People need to relax with rolling starts! Either way..both trucks are towing incredibly. It's a matter of seconds, which really doesn't mean anything..if anything just shows the ability of both trucks. Very capable and can tow under extremely rigorous conditions. I must say I see a lot more Rams towing big semi trailers than Chevys or Fords. For the most part, its just personal preference..capability is basically the same. The air suspension on the Ram is an awesome awesome feature that would sell me anyday! I hate sagging..

Dan Plourd great truck men, my uncle has the 2010 Ram 2500 lemme long horn. love the way that engine sounds. Mercedes split from chrysler in 2009 which is not that long ago. but Mercedes still own's some stacks in chrysler. this allows chrysler to buy some electrical components and they also have a agreement to share tech and material until 2015, even if they split. when ever you have some time look at your window controls on your Ram. then look at a 2015 mercedes e class or any model.

Okay, i went back and re-watched the chevy video. When they hit the throttle (from a dead stop) Nathan taps his screen (only once) 19 seconds later (i timed this with my phone) and Nathan's screen shows 19 seconds --BUSTED-- It takes a full 35 seconds until the chevy is at 60 MPH. Now i understand the dodge wasn't at 60 when they started the timer, but it was around 30 at least. This would have made the times much closer. Also, even if you didn't film the brake test, you could have at least posted the temps in the video, or done a small recap

The first hand movement was a thumb swipe from the stand still to unlock the phone, then nathan says "ok" as he touches the phone again to start the timer at the first merge sign, which is where they always start it. Then if you count 9 seconds, he flashes us the screen which does indeed read 9 seconds. The results are accurate and correct. Sorry chevy boys, dodge wins. Both impressive times however.

Weird their comments back on this test. When they did a Test on the New Eco diesel... They had alotta shit talking about its Chuggin up the hill getting shit done in its Eco way. It was ok for this to do it.. but not ok for the Eco Diesel to tow at 6.1 up the hill and hold atleast 55 at 7200 Trailer with a huge Air Dam infront of it. Psh, Best all get used to the Eco Diesel, its gonna be around awhile and kick some ass...

I'd rather have the 3.37 gears in the chevy instead of the 4.10 in the dodge. The time was the same but I'll guarantee the dmax gets a good bit better mpg. It always does!

All the government motor fans who use the excuse of a "rolling timing" are pathetic. What are you guys thinking? first of all, TFL Truck team are making some of the most entertaining trucking videos on the tube. They worked hard to bring us the video so show some respects. Secondly, even if its true that they did start the timing when the Ram was rolling, so what? does it change anything? The Ram is NINETEEN seconds faster than the GM 3500. Give it a rest! think about it yourself, NINETEEN seconds! it wasn't 1 or 2 seconds. How can a rolling timing vs a dead stop make a 19 seconds differences? Try this yourself, 1 one thousand 2 one thousand 3..all the way to 19..... Yes, a second is not as short as you think. Quit using lame excuses! Does it mean that I am going to make a conclusion that all Ram 3500 are faster up the Ike Guantlet than Silverado 3500 based on the 2 videos? No! There are many other factors that may affect the times on both pickups. On paper, the Dmax has more HP than the Cummins. But as a whole truck, we don't know which one has more HP down to the rear wheels at such high elevation. Also, team TFL never show the tires pressure reading, the wind direction, the outside temperatures...etc... in both videos. And all those parameter will affect the times and you know it's true. In another word, the Silverado was slower than the Ram from the 2 videos, suck it up, GM lame fanboi!

there getting higher tow ratings on most trucks. what used to take a 1 ton can be done with a half ton. same with others like some old 650's can't pull what a 3500 can today. if ya don't use to make $$ ya should still be able to hop in what ever but when u start to pull paper ya get into the regs more so. if ya know about cdl info the government has whole place rigged in zones, height limits, areas are no go for commercial etc... I know trucker who couldn't legally take his truck home to his ranch legally after 20 years of doing so cause urban spraw and newly created zone that made several roads in the area a no go for rigs. he still did it but got a fine after couple years of doing it after the zone was created. idk all the answers but I read somewhere that roads used to be considered personal back in the day and very few outside f highways were regulated. can't stop progress it seems and most can't be city hall or state bureaucrats these days. hell I consider myself lucky having lived without being inoment domaned

how is that pushing it when the truck can pull 28000lbs your only pull 19000lbs thats not pushing it for a truck, like tow 1000lbs over the reccomened tow weight thats pushing it.

If you know a Ram Truck owner he either needs new brakes or just got new brakes. Never been a RAM strongpoint. No mention of brake performance, no mention of MPG. They soft-soaped the very rough ride. Something ain't right about this test.

You haven't been in the new redesigned Ram. You are just BSing, once again! Buy what you like, they are all great pickups. But in this test, done by TFLTruck, the Chevy is slower than the Ram. When you do a comparison, one always have to be slower than the other. That doesn't mean much, really. The Chevy can also be faster under the right condition, done by another team. Just suck it up and move on.

"Something ain't right" or they had no particular problems with the brakes. What's more likely? Either there's no news here OR they are choosing to conceal from us that the brakes were ineffective and the MPG was noncompetitive compared to . Hmmm. Not to mention, they WERE crystal clear when they said this RAM was "much more trucklike" "rides a little rougher" "steers more like you'd expect a truck to steer" "truckiest truck of them all" compared to GM. As well as other concerns such as a high price. And they tell us that it got 3.3 MPG. So...choose what you prefer, but I'm not sure there's a conspiracy going on here. It seems like it was an honest, reasonably accurate, though not exactly deep and comprehensive review...focused primarily on towing up a specific grade "gauntlet." The RAM cost more and rode rougher but did it with more power and less time than the GM and they haven't gotten around to the new Ford yet.

I'm expecting Ford to send the F-350 with the 4.30 axle ratio just to out do Dodge and Chevrolet and make it more unfair
@travis8352
@travis8352 10 жыл бұрын
i dont see that as unfair. i think all 3 companies should send the truck that can tow the most weight. except they have to be 1 ton trucks.
@kriscline98
@kriscline98 10 жыл бұрын
Agreed but people will say it would be unfair as they would be unable to show the best towing ability whereas manufacturers when designing the truck could be thinking of better daily economy. The diesel Chevrolet option only comes with the 3.73 ratio but Ford offers a 3.55, 3.73 and 4.30
