2015 vs 2023 MacBook Pro .... how far have we come?

4 ай бұрынI’ve run some standard tests using Lightroom Classic and Photoshop on many Macs as far back as the 2013 Mac Pro. Here’s a comparison of 6 of those Macs. (sry, this was uploaded previously and was deleted somehow, so I’ve uploaded it again)

Funny, my first Mac was the 2015 27” iMac and at the time I thought I bought a “little too much computer” for my photographic needs. Three years later I did add a 2018 13” MacBook Pro that I mostly use for travel but two years ago I moved to a Studio (M1 Ultra)to replace the ageing iMac . It’s kinda frightening how time seems to be whipping by but even though I thought the Studio was a "little too much computer” as well, I’m really glad I got it spec’d where I did and hope it serves me for at least another five years. But somewhere in the not too far distant future, my laptop will have to be replaced and that might be a head scratcher. Good video. Thanks.

So about 5-8 year between upgrades in order to see a big impact on performance. Currently on m1max and thing my next upgrade should be on the m5 max.

Guess it depends on your definition of big. the current machines are about 8-15 times faster depending on the task than a 2015 laptop. To me big probably isn’t the adjective I’d use, more like huge, or massive. The gain from the M1 if your interested you could watch my recent video comparing the 2019 Mac Pro to the M1Max, M2Max and the M3 max. For most tasks the m3 is about 30% faster than the m1, and in my case screenflow video rendering is done in ½ the time, meaning a typical task that was taking between 10 and 20 minutes is now only taking 5 to 10 minutes. To me that’s pretty big. The real question is whether the M series will continue to scale at about 10% speed gains with each generation. I have a Mac Pro 2019, just the W6800x duo is $5,000 and and its really sad and disenchanting Apple dropped support after promising, and changing, so much. Im really considering a windows PC for my next workstation for the first time in my life.

yeah, I don’t think apple had any clue the M processors would scale in power so quickly. I felt a little burned as well, since in only a couple of years a MacBook Pro was beating my Mac Pro. At the time for processing videos it was the best I could get but I love the fact I can get all the power I need out of a computer I can also travel with. I don’t think I’d give it up for windows though, sort of feel like I’d be cutting off my nose to spite my face. but ya gotta do what ya gotta do I guess. hope you liked the video.

@@cwaynefox I did really enjoy the video, I'm sorry I didn't mention it in my previous comment. It's true I still feel somewhat betrayed by the latest Mac Pro and while I agree that is interesting, the contemporary Apple M processors are outstanding as a mobile solutions and they excel at specific tasks like video rendering and photo editing, but I don't think Apple is doing enough for other specific use cases, like 3D modeling or rendering, which require more that outstanding performance per watt, things like ram modularity and off the shelf contemporary GPUs are a must, pretty basic things they already had to begin with. Seems to me they are just casting these options to upgrade aside over marketing reasons. I apologize if it seems like I'm taking this out on you and your video not my point at all. This is a passionate subject for me as well! cheers!
