The Winner. The 2016 BMW R1200RS is a fantastic motorcycle that solves the problem between the naked R1200R and the touring R1200RT.

55 tickets thats amazing ...here in NZ they will cancel your licence for 3 months if you get to 100 points in two years (up to 10k over 10 points, up to 20k over 20 points etc) so 5 tickets for 11k over in 2 years will mean loosing it for 3 months. After 2 years though , points drop off for each ticket...but if you are on say 90 points and you ask for a court hearing ( delay tactics) your can normally get enough delay for an older one or two to be deleted. dropping your points back. Speed camera tickets don't attract points though, just a fine

My 2012 R1200R is going in for service next Sat so will ask to test ride this bike. I love the look and I've been a fan of the boxer engine for a long while now. Only thing is I'd not want the shift assist but do want the other options in the Premium Pkg but one has to take Shift Assist which I think sucks.

Thanks I am trying to find the balance between wind protection, fun, and occasional comfort for my wife on the back. I am hoping the R with a decent windscreen will fit the bill. The RT just seems bloated, and the RS's snout is just too Japanese sport bike ish.
@toddclaussen
@toddclaussen 9 жыл бұрын
Regarding comfort. How would expect the forward leaning position on the RS (vs the more upright RT ) to effect your body over long distances ? Does the fairing direct the wind over the top of your helmet ? How big is the protection bubble vs the RT ?
@calmoto9073
@calmoto9073 9 жыл бұрын
Todd Claussen For me the position is perfect; that said, I'm not a long distance rider. The protection suits me, but I'm not used to protection. I will say that nothing competes with the RT in that category. I like the RS for my more aggressive riding style.

I have been riding a harley dyna with apes. I got tired of these ugly dragon fly looking bikes blowing past me as I struggled with the wind and consentrated hard on keeping the bike together in the twisties, So I found a guy on Craigslist selling a 2006 R1200GS. I took it for a test ride. I instantly began to smile as the bike did all the work. Needless to say the bike is now sitting my garage next to my harley. The BMW acts as if the harley doesn't exist as the harley threatens to kick its ass. I have to say I hate to sell the harley because there is nothing like the rumbling of heritage Americana between your legs. She is so cool. But that said, I really like to ride and performance is a must and this bike has that.

+Bill Tomasetti I have a K12RS and a street glide. Love mt '57 Chevy of a bike and can't imagine giving it up...But boy there's a reason the K's are called flying bricks. Harley has actually been way more reliable. The 14 yr old K is still faster than the '16 R12RS.

I tried sitting on one at a show. The ergos were weird. The R1200R is nice. The R1200GS is nice. This...the reach over the tank was way too long. If I was going to get stuck in that position I'd just get a sport bike. The only person I can imagine wants this is someone with a hard on for a boxer twin sport bike. Apparently that person has a lot of money, too.

The main reason I gave up BMW (Boxer) ownership was the high cost of ownership per mile. Aside from the thousand dollar "major maintenance" schedules I also had wonky tire wear issues. God help me if anything actually broke, I'd just give Otto my credit card, sell off my assets and return in a week to find out when I could pick up the bike. Not to say they're not sweet rides, but they're not for the light of wallet. I've owned three new bikes since my last Beemer and the cost per mile - for all three bikes - has been less than the one BMW. Just my experience, or common - I don't know.

No manufacturer ever puts cruise controll on their bikes so that you can take both hands off the bar. Motorcycles are to be riden with both hands on the bar,,, thus every manufacturer innovation is made towards the goal so that the rider can handle everything while holding the bar with both hands.

I think BMW have made a mistake with the instruments, the rev counter should be the analogue dial, if only because it looks better. The speedo should be digital, I'm sure a lot of BMW's market is a little on the mature side, and chances are they find the speedo hard to read. It would also make financial sense to do it the other way round, they would only need one part for metric or Imperial speedometer as digital displays can easily be switched between the two.

Indeed, best-lookin' bike BMW has put out in long time...didn't get a chance to sit on one back in October when I was last at a dealership in Austin because they(obviously) were sold-out of them and had a half-dozen on order. Really want to turn my Sportster into a hard-tailed barhopper and get a GS for out-of-town riding.

+scrambler350 have u riden 'em? there's a clear difference, espicially with the older GS-s has longer forks and different angle + older GS-s got higher seat,,, I heard they've taken out two different sizes of the new GS-s !! Any year of GS is best for grand tourismo as long as you keep it on solid road. You'd better not try this 530 pounds lady in the mud. :)

My first BMW was a 1992 K75. Not very high tech but built to last. Next one a 1995 R1100GS was fantastic introduction to new tech. Chassis superb. Motor not so good. Fuel injection glitches. BMW denied it. Traded it in for 2002R1150R. Havent used it much over the past 5 years. However, this past summmere on a road trip, it starved for fuel and front/rear lights went out. Highbeam worked! Strange. Rode it back ans shut it off in garage. No start at all. only 14k on it for miles. GS had 50k and the K75 50K for miles.

Dummy, the RS is closely related to the GS which has never had an electric windscreen. The RT has all the bells and whistles. Do some research if you're going to do 'reviews'.

All three bikes share the same engine. That said, the RT & GS both use a Telelever suspension rather than the telescopic fork used on the RS, & and the R. You really want to stand your ground based on mechanical windscreens? The RT & GS are more closely related than the RS & GS....holden.
