2018 Aprilia RSV4 RF Vs. Ducati Panigale V4 S - Part 2: Street

Күн бұрын

On the racetrack, the fight between the Aprilia RSV4 RF and Ducati Panigale V4 S was so close, it resulted in one of, if not the, closest shootout in Motorcycle.com history, with the two protagonists separated by 0.2% - two-tenths of a percentage point! - on our scorecards. On paper, anyway, the Ducati emerged victorious for a track tool, but it was only our racetrack ringer, Shane Turpin, who ultimately picked the Panigale V4 S - and its $4k heftier price tag - as his weapon of choice. Meanwhile, both Tom and I would elect to save the extra dough and be perfectly happy with the Aprilia - despite what the scorecard says.
For part two of our V4 face-off, we take the two Italians off the track and see what they’re like to live with on the street. As we often see when comparing motorcycles on both the street and track, things we’d often miss or consider non-factors in one environment become major talking points in the other. This is especially true in this case, and our overall scores reflect an even tighter finishing order because of it!

The real answer for the road portion ... get a Tuono. Definitely agree on sound, slap an Akrapovic on the RSV4 and call it a day, best sounding bike period.

I agree with everyone above. Just picked up a 2018 Aprilia Tuono Factory strictly for the street, and was more than able to meet or exceed riding with the guys who track their bikes (on the twisty roads). Looking forward to the RSV4 for the track next year.

Something you guys didn't mention that for me is a big selling point is the dealer network. I'm not sure how many people can say where their nearest Aprilia dealer is and they have been notorious for not getting parts out to their dealerships in a timely manor (although Ducati can sometimes suck at that too.) But for me the lack of dealer network and parts availability puts the Ducati on top.
@skuzzyj
@skuzzyj 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the guy at my local "Aprilia dealer" really wanted me to trade my Shiver in and buy an Indian last time I was there for parts. As if that would make any damn sense. That said, I've found for most things, ordering from AF1 is faster than trying to get shit through your own dealer. Sucks for my dealer but they aren't the ones with the actual parts stock and they won't ship the stuff right to my house. It's like... sorry you chose to locate yourself 40 miles from town but I'm not taking two hours out of my day to pick up the brake parts that fit 7 different bikes that you refuse to stock.

I have an 18 tuono and 19 panigale (call it a mid life crisis) both are AMAZING machines but I agree 100% FOR the street riding nothing beats the tuono, torque is a monster & engine is smooth as butter . The V4 is an animal in its own right but best set up for the track however nothing beats the feeling you get sitting on the Panigale at a stoplight it’s just the essence of coolness

I still dont get what they find so difficult about the aprilia TC controls: no need for menu, press index finger for less TC, press thumb finger for more. On the fly, no need of clutch, neutral, stopping looking at the display or anything. I have adjusted it a couple times at lean on corner exit: 1.feel the tc too early on dry road 2. press with my index finger twice while exiting corner 3. next corner exit feel the back playing a lil bit 5. happiness

Glad you guys mentioned the Panigales nuclear heat on the streets, my local dealer says I am the only one complaining about it. My 2 cents - the duc is prettier, the Aprilia is a better over all package, the duc is new and has some kinks to iron out and the Aprilia is the proven old war horse. If Ducati can fix the heat and mirror issues - worst mirrors on any bike, they would have a clear winner but until then I wish I would have gotten the Aprilia.

László Labancz they are in certain parts of the US just as prevalent as Ducati as far as sport bikes go. Just about 2 weekends back I rode in a group with 5 RSV4s, 2 Panigales (1199 and 1299), 2 S1000RRs, a monster and me on my TV41100F. It was a Euro group purely by accident . I had only ridden with one of the RSV4 riders before and it just randomly occurred from a Starbucks and later STP meeting. Around here if you have a Japanese bike you may be the odd man out . But we have 4 Ape dealers within an hour drive and probably 4 or 5 Ducati dealers.

I ride 17 Tuono Fac daily in traffic. It is sublime in any situation on the road. So comfortable, agile, easy, etc. a masterpiece really. Sounds is amazing (I have Akra) and way better than my V4S (Akra as well)I bought 18 V4S as my track bike and it sucks in traffic, practically a torture to ride in heavy traffic. On the open road It is on the other hand feels more special and acceleration is just mental. It’s electronics package is phenomenal once you learn how to use it. In terms of suspension, you really need to soften that rear, take out preload if you are light and it will handle much much better. Tuono feels quicker at low rpms , but at red line it has no chance vs Duc. I feel happy with my combo. If I could only have one bike it would be Tuono. For the track my choice is V4S because it is so quick. I do think RSV4 is an awesome choice for those who wants to have properly built Italian track monster and save about $10K once exhaust and all is done. It is a better value. V4S with Akra and bits is 40K practically, whereas RSV4 is probably 30. If you want ultimate sex on wheels - Ducati is the one. My opinion. Cheers.

Especially with AF1 out there and other online distributors and bonus I have 2 Aprilia dealers less than 40 min away Anyway dude ride safe 👍

For those saying get a Tuono for the street; well, what if someone isnt a fan of naked and wants a fully faired sport bike even for street use? I think for them bikes like Ninja 1000, Ducati Supersport, Suzuki GSX S1000F etc. make a lot of sense. However if someone wantes a full-on RR for the street, then still none beat the versatile CBR1000RR. Period.

Both sick bikes but the Ducati still has shitty non-foldable mirrors that will break off. After owning the Ducati XDiavel S, I have new found respect for Ducati, the power on that bike was so much fun, pulled like a mofo. If Ducati comes out with a V4 Streetfighter I will buy it!

The issue isn't with who wins. The problem comes when someone loses. Losers are grumpy, and perhaps wont let you borrow as many bikes in the future. ..but way way worse: Loser are far less likely to buy ads. That is bad for business. Yikes.

Aprilia for me, no question. Fact is, I’m not rich so $20k+ for any bike is way too much. I can get a 2018 RSV4 RR for $13999 right now and it’s about 95% of the RF version. Still has the Brembos, the TFT gauges, the 201hp motor, the sound, and stuff like cruise control but it’s less than half as much $$$ as a Panigale V4S. If money wasn’t a factor then I’d I love to get the Ducati but as it is, I’ll take the Aprilia. Picking mine up in 4 weeks!!!

If you're trying to make up your mind for the street, take Aprilia. Getting your legs cooked and the finicky shifts suck to live with. The only reason to take a Ducati for the street is to be able to say you have the most powerful (cheater 105 extra cc) bike and the looks. But if that's what matters to you most, you're not a serious rider anyway. Keep in mind how much engine you can use on the street anyway: both will be breaking speed limits in 1st gear before getting into the meat of the power band and acceleration will be limited by the traction and not flipping instead of the engine.

Just saying that because these bikes are at a high price point, doesn't mean people don't take into consideration the cost difference.. It's a bit ignorant to assume that people who like these bikes don't care about money at all. I mean for that difference you could get yourself the RSV4 with full Akra and remap for less money than the stock Ducati, and now it performs just as well engine wise and sounds a billion times better and still has better chassis (and less weight than stock). Not to mention that the exhaust swap on the Ducati is a pain in the ass and you will pay a lot more for that compared to the exhaust swap on the Aprilia. To me, RSV4 all day even if I had the money to buy both.

the fuck does that have to do with anything? :I And for your information I can't afford either.. well, I could, but I also want food the next month.. But I hardly see why that is relevant. Care to explain your point? You could sit happy with the Aprilia with full Akra and a years worth of insurance for the cost of the stock Ducati, which might just be the make or break situation for someone's economy.

Aprilia RSV4 wins as a street bike because your going to literally get your arse burnt more on the Ducati. Might not be a problem during a test ride but as an owner on a 35c + day you're going to regret the Duke . Top marks to Ducati for intuitive electronics Sexy headlight + tail section and it does cut a slightly better silhouette shape than the Aprilia but the duke does still sound maybe by design like a V twin . These days Im more into and love the exhaust sound of a motorcycle and my favorite street bike notes are Yamaha TRX 850 ... Yamaha cross-plane R1... Any Kawasaki triple S1 S2 S3 S4 H1 H2 and my all time favorite the ...V4 Aprilia so much so that I bought a Factory 1100 Tuono at first site . Its not the quickest of the lights or most technical but oh that cracking 15000rpm exhaust note .My riding buddies on there H2rs R1s MVs CBRs sports bikes drop behind me rapidly once we hit the good stuff cause the Tuono has so much low down exit grunt and ground clearance/stability and a inspiring 10kms more exhaust note exiting out of the twisties quick shifting crackle to the next corner after corner . The front brakes on my Tuono are a disappointment and are OK but not as great as they say compared to other bikes I've ridden. Were are in a blessed time to be into bikes .
