I'm having the same problem in my 05 xterra, just parked to get gas at the gas station after school then boom coolant erupted out of the engine bay and MAJOR over heating. I thought the radiator broke, nope. Thought it was the fan that broke or the fan motor, nope. Head gasket leak or stuck thermostat which were all recently replace...barely found this hose finally cracked and fell off...I hope thats all there is. Thank you for showing!

Hope you get it all back together with no issues. It's always a worry when you get into an overheating situation. So far I've had it happen twice with no apparent long term consequences. Once when the radiator failed, and once when this stupid plastic piece failed. Best of luck.

Thanks for the video, unfortunately I didn't find this until after I performed the repair, but my wife's 2009 Frontier had the exact same problem. It blew off at the exact same point right as she was about to go into a car wash. I wasn't surprised to find the new piece made of aluminum, and judging by people's comments, it seems this is a very common occurrence

I had the same problem, exactly. That plasic part just dissolves over time. So.. I pulled the defective part and attached the hose directly to the inlet without the part. Don't know what that part was supposed to do but it is hard to imagine so I am going to drive it this way and check it once in awhile.

Spent the last 5 days dealing with a cooling system issue (thermostat was stuck open permanently and after I replaced it I had A LOT of air in my line, ALWAYS purge the air from the system. Plenty of easy videos out there and its a more common issue). After finally sorting through the pain of an issue, the inlet broke EXACTLY like yours did on the final turn in to home... I took the hoses off to flush the core out before that so im not sure if I started the break or if it just decided to go🤣. Auto zone (for me) had all the parts I needed, and im glad I dont have to get into the passenger side to remove something for this job. Doing it later today and ill follow up with any issues I had/tips!

Thanks for the video..! The heater core inlet assy isn't necessary. It's just a place holder for the Xterra, which does not have a rear heater option like the Pathfinder did. You can just remove it completely and attach the inlet hose directly to the heater core. But if you must buy it, Rock Auto sells a Dorman branded one for around $8.

I was going to post the same info when I came upon yours. My xterra 2005 burst a few years ago, so I went to the dealer to pickup the part. When they brought me the part it didn't have the purge nipple on it and it was completely blocked off like the old one you see in this video. I ask the guy about it and he said that the purge valve was eliminated and wasn't necessary. Then I said well i don't need the part then, but he said I still do to make it work. I just walked out and went home. Got out my tools took off the plastic junk and connected directly to the core line. Been that way for at least 5 years now, as well the return was replaced a few months before the the inlet went. Great truck poor material including the radiator, replace that about 1 1/2 years ago too. Top is plastic and cracked. Went with an aftermarket because Nissan want to much for another plastic junk.

Great video! I just did this replacement myself using the same Dorman part for my 2010 xterra. Everything went as planned EXCEPT that the clamp that came with my part was too large (the clamp with the blue plastic holder). It looked kind of wrong in the package, but I put it on anyway, and when I released the clamp (by popping off the blue plastic piece), I found that I could pull the entire coupler right off the heater core nub very easily. Fortunately I had the old clamp lying around so I used that. So, if you are doing this repair, check to make sure the proper clamp is supplied!!!!

Rick Rose my father in law is a mechanic. That piece is not a control valve of any kind and the fluid runs right thru it. Attaching the hose to the firewall seemed to East a fix but we did it. Attaching it was difficult because of limited space. I later came across an article of someone doing just what we had done pointing out that nipple on top was for rear heat in a pathfinder. The new part doesn’t have that nipple. Fluid runs thru it so why even use it?

200K+ miles 2008 Frontier. The inlet is beginning to leak so I just picked up this very same part today from Auto Zone. I was curious if the grey hose clamp was actually the replacement for the end away from the firewall and that the rubber and aluminum parts were fastened together at the factory. I will likely use a new hose clamp if the existing one isn't secure enough.
@RickRose
@RickRose Жыл бұрын
Not sure about a grey clamp, but I will say I wound up replacing that blue plastic one after it allowed a leak to occur, months later. Standard metal one worked fine.

Just finished. Took all of 30 minutes. I was referring to the clamp in the middle between the rubber and aluminum. I wound up using the original hose clamps for the connection. The one with the blue clip was too big. Otherwise, stock from parts store; it came right off and went right back on.

Ive never worked under a hood and i have the exact same failure...this video is ALMOST giving me enough confidence to do it myself. I just got the same new part. Its just a matter of wresting the broken part off? And sliding the new part on and clamping correctly? Some guy was telling my i have to take my dash out and all this BS. Can anyone confirm this is fairly easy?
@RickRose
@RickRose 4 жыл бұрын
You DO NOT have to take the dash apart if this part is what failed. Yes, it is a matter of getting the old part off and the new part on, all under the hood. Getting the old part off might be a challenge for someone who never messed around with clamps and whatnot. Good luck.
@gacylikesbrutal
@gacylikesbrutal 4 жыл бұрын
Ya, i figured the guy was not the smartest who suggested that. Lol This problem is SUPER common im seeing and im glad this one video exists. I have the blue clamp holder secure on my part lucky lol. So to paint a picture of the process....after wrestling the old hose off (i assume ill have to cut it toward the top like you did). After its off slide the new hose part on the bib. Pull off blue thing to secure clamp. After that is just connecting the other aluminum end to the coolant hose and clamping securely? Bada boom bada bing? Im trying to step by step in my brain cuz to someone who never been under the hood its scary lol. My Xterra has the same year and same milage as yours. The failure is a few months apart. Wild. As for the clamps im not as worried about those because im a gunsmith and i can tell they are a SOB. Just a like strength and finesse i should get it done in like 20-30 mins no? Its also raining here in northern Ca. -__-
@RickRose
@RickRose 4 жыл бұрын
@@gacylikesbrutal Yes--Get the old clamp off, then you'll likely need to slit the old hose off with a razor knife. The hardest part is getting the old part off. The new one should go on easily. 20-30 mins is a reasonable timeframe. As for the rain--I finally built a garage and hope to not have to deal with that problem again. Again, good luck!

Mine just broke. After we replaced the part and antifreeze, antifreeze is puking and bubbling out of the reservoir. Don’t think it’s a head gasket because the oil looks fine. Not milky. What could be causing this?
@RickRose
@RickRose 3 жыл бұрын
Coming out of the reservoir? My guess, and I am not a mechanic, is that you had an air bubble trapped in the system. Once the bubble boiled its way out, the level should have dropped, allowing you to add more coolant. That's again my best non-mechanic guess.

Since I somewhat stupidly removed the factory clip retainer prior to reassembly, I was forced to use pliers to hold the clip open whilst I jammed the hose over the bib and thence the clip over the hose. It was harder than it needed to be, because of said stupidity. If you leave the retainer in place, you should be able to easily slide the hose over the bib, pop off the retainer clip, et voila! You are nearly done.

Hey, I'm trying to determine if it could be a leak in my hose or the actual radiator. Can you tell me just about much fluid leaks out in either case (unit of measure: oz or cups / something easy to eyeball )? I'm getting quite a bit of leakage once I park.

The only way I knew mine was leaking was that the temp would rise, so I can't help you on the volume measurements. All I can say is, track it down quickly, because when it goes, it goes. It will leave you stranded someplace. Try looking under the hood while it is running. Good luck! And thanks for stopping by.

And BTW--Don't fool around with a coolant problem. If your engine gets too hot, it's toast. Seriously--Track this problem down or hire someone who can.

What's the part to the right of the one your fixing? You mentioned it in the video. I need to replace both.

There are two hose assemblies that go through the firewall side-by-side. One is input; the other output. Can't remember which is which. I'll try to dig up the part (I bought it but didn't swap it out) to grab a number for you tomorrow. But if you do a search for heater hose assembly for your year XTerra, they should both pop up.

Oh heck, I just saw that both parts are in my description above. Click on "read more" up above and you should see the links.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question. If you can't find the answer on the web I would ask someone at the parts store.
