There were two incidents of a Red-winged Blackbird harassing #3 and actually riding him while he was on the way to the nest. (The second incident on this vid was corroborated by a ground video--that blackbird was indeed on #3!) The blackbirds nest in the cattails below the nest and are quite territorial.

Yeah, no kidding! That's really irritating -- stupid bird! (Usually I am kind to all animals but that's going a little too far ...) :-(

The blackbird can't do any harm to the ospreys, and the ospreys are right in the middle of the blackbirds' territory. I look at it as amazing tenacity by the male Red-winged Blackbirds.

I kniw what you're saying, Riv. I like blackbirds as well as ospreys ... but ... do the ospreys do harm other than being in their territory? Constant nagging could cause stress. I'm all for live and let live!

First I've seen of THIS! Thanks for the reason. If I didn't know WHY, I'd think it was "cute" ... well, I guess it is. I'm just glad it wasn't an eagle or a hawk!

No harm thinking of it as cute. :) The ospreys don't hurt the blackbirds and the blackbirds can't hurt the ospreys.

Wonder why they do that.

Red-winged Blackbirds are extreeeemely territorial, and the osprey nest is right in the middle of their breeding ground (the cattails below). Normally, we just see them chasing the ospreys or dive-bombing them. This was a first to see them latch on (and try to peck)--and I think both incidents were the same bird, based on the missing wing feathers.
