The 2019 Aston Martin Vantage is the first all-new Vantage in 12 years. With a completely redesigned body and chassis, a Mercedes-AMG sourced twin-turbo 4.0L V8 and a ZF 8-speed gearbox, it has all the ingredients for success. But as we see in this video, our test vehicle has some unavoidable electrical gremlins, ill-fitting bodywork, and the kind of low-speed behavior you expect from a race car, not a daily driver, this new Aston comes up short in some key areas, especially for the price.
Aston Martin provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

I drove one. I'll concede that the brakes are a touch grabby at slow speed, but, that car was fantastic! Balanced so perfect that it feels like the universe pivots around your sphincter. Also the suspension was completely comfortable and compliant in "sport" and still fine in "sport+". A gorgeous, FAST, sports car. And yes, there is a manual transmission coming in about a year. I've had factory reps say it to my face.

I certainly don't come on here enough to show my appreciation for what you do and how you do it. It is enjoyable to watch your reviews and in my humble opinion you are right up there with Henry Catchpool, and Criss Harris as well. Two of the best automotive journalists. That is to say if I see a review done by most others I will not watch it, but these Smoking Tire reviews are far and away the best quality and allow the viewer to catch a glimpse of what it might be like to experience a vehicle of this caliber. I drive a 2015 Chevrolet SS so I don't drive a slouch, but I don't think that my car holds a candle to something of this nature which is why I want to watch a journo who is able relay the experience to the veiwer. Thanks again.

I participated in a couple of Aston Martin events around L.A., got to test drive the V12 Vantage, Rapide, and my favorite, the Vanquish. They hit all the senses in a way no other car I've driven did, including Porsche. They may not be the fastest, but if I had to choose a car to live in, that I would enjoy driving every day, it would be the Vanquish. So once they sussed out I wasn't ever going to afford one, their attitude changed. But I still love the marque.

My F-Type R has the same 8 speed ZF transmission. I've noticed that in D and S modes, it likes to start off in 2nd gear and stay in 2nd gear when you come to a stop. That also contributes to a lot of creep Matt complains about when you lift off the brake. If you're use manual mode and shift down to first after stopping, it makes it a lot easier in super slow traffic and creep is greatly reduced.

You got to be fucking kidding, right? As amazing as both the 488 and the 675LT are, they just don't sound good. Not one bit. The 488 sounds like crap compared to the amazing 458, and the 675LT (like all McLaren's) is probably the most boring sounding supercar out there, also way too quiet. The AMG V8 is probably the best sounding turbo V8 right now and for sure sounds better than the 675LT and 488. As for the 911 turbo, I agree that it doesn't sound that good. But not any worse than a 675LT.

@@samueljones3668 Mr Jones for reference the AMG GTS starts at around $132k, the GTC around $145k and the GTR around $157K... Keep in mind that the base GT starts at just over $112k. Thats a better price point on all models, its a better driver with less weight and a better trans. I think the point here is that the GT is a better overall deal and car compared to the Aston. The Aston has unique package, but the weight/trans/suspension work against it... Having driven both and owned a GTS I get the joke LOL

Superb review with accurate and justified criticisms. I noticed how stiff the ride was on the video. I agree with you that I really don't think this car has been fully developed yet either in terms of drivability or build quality. A V12 manual Vantage would still remain my preference at the moment. Hopefully by the time this one gets a manual gearbox the whole car will be more sorted.

That amount of gap is unacceptable! But I work for Aston at a dealership; the fender gap isn't bad on the 9 Vantages that we have received thus far. There is a possibility that maybe the fender was replaced and removed after the vehicle left the factory. If we received a vantage with that amount of gap we would adjust the panel when we inspect the car. Love The Smoking Tire!! btw and our dealership also has your old evora press car but i had to remove the stickers 🙁

Could this be a "Press Car" that has been beat to hell and maybe had a small collision? The Vantage I drove was pretty near perfect, but that is the only one i've driven let alone seen. Unless you were referring to ECU mapping, I think the problem with this being the only application with a manual transmission is, for the most part, mitigated by the gearbox being a trans-axle. There's no issue physically mating the engine to the gearbox. However, on he electronics side, it may be more difficult.

In general, I love Matt's reviews and he is one of my "go to" reviewers. I just picked up a Vantage and he seems spot on. It's definitely a bit stiff, maybe a little too much in sport (basic) mode. Seems like its should be a a little less stiff for a street car. The panel gaps, in places, are strangely large. Luckily, I don't have any of the quirky sensor issues. Overall I love the looks of the car and can forgive all the other sins. I think Matt's reviews are very insightful for somebody who actually wants info on a car and may actually buy one. Too many reviewers seem like they are just focused on what a car is like for a 20 minute joy ride and not focussed on what it is really like to live with a car. Keep up the great work.

Wouldn't be an Aston without those quirks and features. You put it perfectly when you said "in theory". Honestly that should be Aston Martin's slogan.

This sounds like a poorly executed half-baked idea. Aston should not have released this car to the press.

Or, he's just pissy that he was this far down the waiting list to drive one and when he go the chance he ended up with a press car that everyone and their cousin had beaten the bag out of? Why's he just now releasing a video of this car? I'm nobody, and I drove the thing last May.
@bwest6275
@bwest6275 5 жыл бұрын
itsonlymusic1 LoL not sure where you are coming from. His points are valid. Those panel gaps - atrocious. The cosmetics of the vehicle - in the eye of the beholder I guess. But it’s not obviously pretty like the original vantage imho. And the driving experience - I trust Matt is being honest. But let’s say this car truly was beat to shit. Hence a reason not to release it to the press in this condition.
@itsonlymusic1
@itsonlymusic1 5 жыл бұрын
The car I drove had tight and even gaps. I don't know what happened to this one? I agree that the old version had a classic almost unbeatable design, but, I like the new more aggressive look. Something had to change after 12yrs of the old style. I had a very different impression of the driving dynamics.
@bwest6275
@bwest6275 5 жыл бұрын
itsonlymusic1 so obviously it’s a personal experience. You clearly had a different one than Matt. You see the panel gaps on this car. It’s not like driving it 10,000 miles does that lol. This one clearly wasn’t the best example, and it so happens it fell in the hands of a reviewer. You can’t discredit his opinion. This is the car they gave him.
@itsonlymusic1
@itsonlymusic1 5 жыл бұрын
His opinions and experience with the car are totally valid, and documented as per the panel fit. Where I lose faith in the review is the claim you echoed that the car is "half baked". That, given the quality of engineers who worked on the car, and the car that I experienced, is a ludicrous statement. I don't doubt Matt's experience but question the severity of the summary. To each their own.

Wow, what a disappointment? If it was a 370Z NISMO, you wouldn't even drive it the way it sat. Truth. Front bumper NOT attached? WTF. Panel gaps, normally, I laugh- this was unsafe, far beyond a panel gap issue. Yes, I like the look, but, a quick glance from a distance- 370Z... Classic AM lines seem to be missing. Not bad, but 'less' than traditional AM lines (perception of this viewer?) and not the visual perfection of ALL prior cars. Plenty of go (MB motor, ZF 8 speed- nice), but, lacks the distinctive soundtrack Aston is known for... Really disappointed that car was delivered to One Take in that condition. Matt has a love for these cars (as evidenced by prior ownership), so, I sense his "WTF is this?" throughout the entire review. A GT car should be very forgiving on long trips- this isn't. Random beeps, poor fit and finish... handcrafted? Or, slapped together? I'm out, and, I bet Matt is too.

do you have something in the passenger seat? my old grand am with a tired 2.4l would do 15mph idling it was gross 0-5 with lots of brake at the end of 5 funny cause i did brakes and fluid all around and they would grab very nicely for an old Pontiac but now i have an 89 camaro ( 0to 5 its seems to give you the choice ONCE warmed up) and a 2002 yukon (strong 0 to 5 does kinda putt out at 5 though)

I've never heard any other review of the Vantage complain about the stiffness or "herky-jerky" low speed power character before this. You normally give a pretty accurate assessment of the cars you drive so I wonder why this is so?! I guess the only answer is to take one out for a test drive myself! Though I do feel that I am likely to want a more "GT" comfort setting most of the time!

Having driven quite a few pre-production versions of latest gen cars I'd love to know if this was one or not. If it was not pre-production then the comments here on some aspects of the car would be greatly concerning. Maybe the suspension had some late final tuning? Anyway, a very useful and balanced review and I also lament the end of the beautiful dashboard and instruments used in previous Astons.

Just about every car's top speed is aero- or drag-limited. It's either that or rev-limited which would be unusual (because in that case making the final gear taller would increase the top speed...in which case it would be drag-limited again).

That bong sound is the bonnet open sound isn't it? Given the panel gap to the bonnet on one corner it certainly looks like it isn't latched on one side.

Is that gearbox going to be a pain to drive with in 10 or so years? I drove a paddle-shift Vanquish a few weeks ago and it was just as bad as I thought it would be. To me it seems the car should either have a Dual Clutch or Manual. I think single clutch auto just isn't 'future proofed' enough. Thoughts?
