VW's flagship sedan and successor to the Volkswagen CC, the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon, finally arrives on U.S. shores. Will Kaufman traveled to picturesque Central California for a test drive to find out what this 268-horsepower liftback sedan has to offer. Is this smart luxury on a budget or a mainstream car that's too big for its britches?
About the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon:
The Arteon is an all-new Volkswagen sedan-style hatchback. This large-ish fastback is emblazoned with the familiar VW badge that typically represents accessibility for mass-market shoppers. The problem is that the Arteon's price starts in entry-level luxury territory and extends even further in its top trim levels. It's meant to be a more affordable alternative to larger luxury-brand sedans and an aspirational flagship for the VW brand, but does it offer enough style and substance to succeed?
The original CC brought coupe-like styling to the mainstream, so it didn't have much direct competition. The Arteon debuts in what is now a very specialized subclass of vehicles that is positioned somewhere between sedan, hatchback and wagon. The Arteon's price tag may seem steep compared to standard midsize sedans, but compared to rivals such as the Kia Stinger and the Buick Regal Sportback, the Arteon's base price isn't nearly as jarring.
The 2019 Arteon does have some potential merit for its rather small audience. It possesses hatchback-based utility, available all-wheel drive, and a sleek and modern design. Overall, it's worth a look if you want something nicer than the typical family sedan but can't afford a luxury-branded model.
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is a four-door hatchback that is available in three trim levels: SE, SEL and SEL Premium. All versions are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (268 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque) that is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All but the base front-wheel-drive SE trim come standard with VW's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.
Buyers can also opt to add the R-Line package, which includes practical upgrades along with sporty aesthetics. An Arteon R-Line gets 19- or 20-inch wheels, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and a Sport Plus mode to sharpen up response even more.

@@anthonysmith9994 APR+ is the low torque stage 1 tune. APR matches the factory powertrain warranty, though I've never heard of anyone who was tuned having issues. It's just a little peace of mind for a car that still has under 2k miles. It's quick but doesn't feel it like my GTI after being tuned. I attribute it to both the weight and the auto trans. I really wish it had a DSG and if you're coming from one, the slower shifts are noticeable. It's still a beautiful car and that two tone brown leather is gorgeous.

Great review and I appreciate the honesty regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the car. I am one of the niche VW fans who wants a sedan over an SUV. The design is sleek and updated and having sons who are also 6' tall, the rear leg room is a must. I drive 75 highway miles round-trip to work, and I just couldn't image not having ACC! This is also why I want a GT versus something "sporty." I do wish the digital cockpit and adaptive cruise-control was offered on cheaper trim lines. The 4-Motion is nice, but a necessity in my opinion. Local dealers have finally started to get a couple in and I'm looking forward to a test drive.

I find this car very confusing and somehow missing the mark. I also find the styling to be too bland to be a style icon. If feels like it's taking too much Golf and A3 to create an A5 clone on a budget, but by dipping down into the lower-tier of car, it fails at being an A5 clone. The 268 HP tune of the 2.0T seems to satisfy what you expect for the market on paper, but is the character of this drivetrain good for this segment? My friends had CCs and they felt like a special, more solid versions of a Passat with a more stylish and european look outside. Why does this not satisfy me? I can't quite put my finger on it.

At the Chicago Auto Show I sat in this and was not particularly impressed. It isnt more sporty looking nor is it more functional than a Kia Stinger. Interior is tight as well. If it costs more than a Passat, I cannot imagine this doing very well. It is late to the show - this is such a niche car and when cars are not the big ticket sellers anymore, it will be interesting to see how VW handles this.

Alright so I have a 2019 Jetta and it's amazing. Is it super fast? Oh no. Is it super sporty? Not really. (Try the GLI). But it's FUN, and CHEAP. I get more features in my $25,000 Jetta than my friend did in his $35,000 A3 by QUITE the margin, and it comes standard with a panoramic sunroof at base price of $18,000 which you don't find in the Jetta's competitors, and I don't have to pay an absurd amount for navigation (ask any Mazda dealer how much navigation is, I dare you). It's more unique than a toyota corolla which EVERYONE HAS. It includes luxury interior lighting which you won't find in any Jetta competitors OR an Audi A3. For someone who wants luxury on a budget, without breaking their wallet, Volkswagen is the way to go and I would believe this is a great car for practical people. The Arteon seems to be a luxury car for NORMAL people with NORMAL jobs - there's very little competition for that kind of market. (Mind you - I've topped out at 47.7 MPG before, and it has one of the most advanced driver information displays on the market. I'm never dissatisfied by mileage or entertainment. THIS A JETTA.).

Real shame about the rear head room - I'm a chauffeur, and if it weren't for that, it would make a very good limo. It's a deal breaker. Another lesser issue over here in Australia, is that we only get the DSG, which wouldn't be as smooth. Love the boot though - it's better than the large Euro limos for sure. We also have the Skoda Superb here - this car is based on the same platform as the Arteon. The Superb is more sedan-like, so has more head room, but it just doesn't exude luxury unfortunately. DSG again, and the cabin lets in excessive road and wind noise IMHO. Shame.

I own both a KIA (Sorento) and a VW (GTI). So I'm favorably disposed to each brand. The Stinger GT is a fine automobile but to configure it comparably to the top trim Arteon you have to opt for the GT2 at well over $53K. All in all, the Arteon is designed for high speed long distance travel on well maintained highways. I'd bet on its greater long term durability on that score. The more appropriate comparison is between the 4 cylinder Stinger and the Arteon. And in that comparison I think the Arteon comes out ahead in terms of "power, handling, looks, and value" at roughly the same price.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 жыл бұрын
VW doesn't expect to sell many Arteons in the US. That's according to VW's new president. It's meant to be a semi-halo model in the US, similar in its mission to the K900 from KIA, demonstrating what the brand is capable of delivering and drawing some traffic to showrooms. The Arteon is a true mid-priced European GT sedan designed to travel at high speeds for long distances on European highways where speed limits are higher or non-existent. VW has a spotty record trying to sell several of its models in the US. The European Passat is a popular vehicle in Europe that languished in showrooms in the US until an American version, larger and cheaper, was designed. A similar story for the Touareg, still among the most popular European SUV's but a vehicle that didn't sell in the US. The Atlas was designed to replace it here and sales reflect its success on that score. The Arteon is another effort to sell a European model in the US but VW isn't betting big on the US market. That's why various engine options (three petrol and three diesel versions are available in Europe) and other features aren't included on the US version, an effort that would drive the price higher and complicate parts and service issues in the US, not to mention that VW (along with other manufacturers) has abandoned any diesel engines for the US market . Those who feel the Accord, the Camry, or the Stinger are significant (or superior) competitors reflect the difference in the North American and European markets. The Accord, Camry, and several other midsize sedans are fine vehicles but they're not GT sedans designed to run comfortably at well over 100 mph for hours on superbly maintained highways. Trying that in America will land you in jail or in the morgue. The Stinger is a GT-like sedan from an Asian manufacturer designed in California specifically for the North American market. It, too, is a fine vehicle but it's not a true European GT either. Its volume model is the GT, a twin scroll V6 that relies on low fuel prices and ferocious acceleration rather than high speed cruising for its appeal. And the chrome color plastic faux vents on the side of the vehicle are among the numerous differences between it and the more elegant Arteon.

a flagship with a 4 cylinder, no thanks, I will keep my 3.6 vr6 4 motion cc. Oh, this is not more powerful. Would you really spend 50k for a 4 banger. Failure waiting to happen

@@EpicDrew15 the 3.6 is a great motor, they should have just put a turbo on it and be done with it.

Does anyone else dislike hatches? If I was in the market, I would pass on this because it's a hatch. I like the trunk separate from the interior.

You have a number of options on that score but the fact is that many consumers prefer the versatility and expansive cargo space of these "hatchback sedans."

@@sportyhuntley8914 Well, you asked "Does anyone else dislike hatches?" The answer is that in a shrinking market for sedans the hatchback feature is an important and popular feature. It does have one significant disadvantage compared to traditional sedans: the greater interior noise of an open trunk. But that's not enough to discourage many buyers.

That's ridiculous. The Phaeton was a $100K vehicle with a huge engine. It bears no resemblance, whatsoever, to the Arteon.

Nothing like the Phaeton whatsoever - the Phaeton was a large very luxurious sedan.

Well, they are getting extra use out of the 'A', 'E', 'T' and 'ON'. No, this is not a no compromise lux sedan, but it is a top shelf model and there is no 'Audi tax' associated with it.
