Ever since BMW released its S 1000 RR for the 2009 model year, the bike has wowed us with its potent and exhilarating performance. Whether burning laps around racing circuits or racking up the odometer with heated grips on “high,” few other liter-class sportbikes offer the versatility of the Bavarian bike.
--
For 2020, BMW engineers went back to the drawing board re-engineering nearly every component of the motorcycle in the effort of delivering an even more adept superbike. We highlight the laundry list of updates and improvements in the 2019 BMW S 1000 RR First Look article.
We also gave it an initial shakedown test during the 2020 BMW S 1000 RR First Ride Review. Now we put it through its paces during our work week commute in this episode of MC Commute. Tune in to see how the BMW performs on the street. After watching this video, sound off in the comment section below and let us know what you think of the changes BMW has made to its new S 1000 RR.

I own the 2020 RR and have over 1000 miles on it. Mine is (Brentuning) flashed and this dramatically improves the performance and character of the bike. Not only are the limits gone, but it’s smoother and sounds better. It’s amazingly fast and drivable. I’ve also done a couple of track days on the 2020 RR (and previous generations) via California Superbike School. For a “commute” review, you should have looked at a bunch more of its features such as the Bluetooth integration (both phone and helmet), Nav, useful phone app, and the brilliant hill stop assist (it holds the brake for you when stopped on a hill so you can relax with a quick squeeze of the lever). The Sport display on the TFT console is easily selected, which gives more information such as max brake pressure, max DTC intervention, current and max left/right lean angle and a bunch more. It’s very cool. You only use the programmable Race Pro modes when you want something special (e.g., do higher wheelies/stoppies). In fact you can select how high (either way) you will allow it to go. For the track, I keep wheelie intervention high so it only allows about a 6” wheelie, so when the power wheelie rises exiting from a corner, you don’t need to let up on the throttle. Just keep the throttle pegged and it gives the max amount it should. The US-tune RRs at CSS had rough vibration at high revs/throttle as you describe. For whatever reason (maybe the tune), mine is considerably smoother. The handling, brakes, suspension, programmability, console and so much else are amazing. This is a great bike.

I don’t know about all that ECU talk, somehow other manufacturers like Ducati, Yamaha, and Suzuki can build a new liter bike that has power below 9K RPM, but whatever the issue is, it’s a real problem here. I demoed this for my video and I was surprised just how flat and limp this engine is below 9000 RPM. On the street its useless. It’s like riding a 600cc power-wise until you hit the explosion of power at 9K. Unimpressive torque as well. BMW needs to fix this bike. Also I had a hell of a time finding neutral and the demo bike I rode had over 2K miles on it so it wasn’t a break in issue. And I see the issue is here as well. They need to fix all of this for 2021.

Cruising at 4k rpm at 60 mph, with the beemer in fifth gear, is exactly what my 85 hp, 600 sport bike is geared at in 6th (for extra mpg). But, first is radically different. My bike hits 72 in first at 13k, while the beemer hits it at 10k. Launches are very difficult with only 85 hp and 45 ft-lbs of torque, but imagine DOUBLE of both. Should be easy, despite the slightly taller gearing. Doing the math, the S1000 should hit 93 mph at 13k. I remember an R1 from a few years back that hit 98 mph in first.

The location of the screen is too far below the eye line of the rider, this is a complaint i've had of my last 2 bmw including the GS 850 I own now. On that s1000, it's practically buried in the chassis, I would not like that at all. As far as the feature navigation goes, it's not difficult to figure out. ECU tuning can be done remotely by some of the better shops, no need to remove it.

If you live in the United States you are covered by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. The manufacturer or dealer cannot deny your warranty claim if you have installed aftermarket or recycled parts, with a caveat. Say if you flashed your ECU and your brake pads fell off, you would have a valid warranty claim. BUT, if you flash your ECU and your ECU fries, or you throw a rod and grenade your engine, the manufacturer and dealer might void your warranty and deny your claim.

Totally. That extra 30 grand you spend on a car (vs a regular bike) all went to energy, like the diesel used to transport the parts and finished product, and the diesel/coal/electricity used to mine/melt/process/machine the iron ore, steel allows, aluminum ore, aluminum alloys, rubbers, glass, plastics, etc. And $30k worth of gasoline will get your bike half a million miles. Basically, a lifetime of motorcycling won't burn the energy it cost to get your car or truck to the dealership. And ten years later you spend that much on another car all over again!

I have really been wondering for a while the truth about Adam’s gushing review of the R1 yet his seemingly bored mood with the BMW. What is the deal. He doesn’t SAY it yet I hear his disgust with the BMW and his love for the R1. I just wish he’d acknowledge it and say why.

Bro all that shit... turn on this, turn off that, set this to max... I couldn't ride this bike because i would be uncomfortable riding it while feeling it's not set-up the best way... I'll stick with my 2006 ninja 636, i just get on and ride

i went to see this at the dealer and it costs $30 000 Canadian with all the options. In my opinion this doesn't feel special compare to aprila rsv4 1100 factory or the ducati v4

When I went at the end of May, they had already sold their stock for 2019, and they wanted a $2k premium for a special order to have one delivered by mid-October. So, you'd barely get to break it in, before having to pack it away for the winter. All, while my friends in the US were talking about their having overstock down there, at the time. And, the dealership here would only do a special order with top specifications, so you'd be at almost $40k Canadian otd. They can fuck the hell off with that price, if you ask me. haha
