I believe TOYOTA comes with a new trans oil which can withstand more extreme temperatures and thus avoiding the need for external oil cooler.I watch the same thing in TFL channel as well

@@jasleenkaur3543 For nearly 50 grand per unit the truck should be equipped with a auxiliary tranny cooler, and engine oil cooler, they also stopped offering a locking rear diff......Toyota is making a huge mistake.

@@dennisschmidt975 they do not need more than what they have. There's an integrated heating/cooling system, as well as a wider range of operating specs (advanced synthetic fluid). No reports of trans failures owing to high temps.

yes, the way I did it is less than half of the price of that guy's kit. That was my main motivation was how to do it for less than that. It is very nice, but 1000 bucks is a lot when it isn't even installed. The custom machined part is stainless and then powder coated...way to expensive and why would you need to powder coat stainless when its already stainless. If he wants to get a bunch of cost down, change that to aluminum.

@@aprecision4013Agree, I basically copied his design, made the bracket with Aluminum, bought my parts and have a very oem looking installation for $500 less than what he charges. This cooler brought so much peace of mind…lol. I was monitoring my temps and getting into 230 driving by myself on my daily conmute…crazy! Now withe cooler it stays 185-190 at the most.

I feel the same way and will gladly let Toyota put their parts on it if they ever recall. In the mean time I am not willing to drive it around knowing that it will damage the transmission in the long run. I put it on under 4k mi and I never towed in those first 4k mi so I don't think I did any damage to it. I was more concerned that the transmission will fail somewhere out of warranty like 100k mi (way too early but will out of warranty and probably 7 yrs into my owning it) and by that time it will just be on me to replace it

Bought a 2020 tundra used from the dealer. Transmission blew up within a month. Toyota is replacing it under warranty. Only 47,000 miles on the truck. The previous owner towed a fish house with it. I’ll be adding one after I get the truck back.

I am well aware...and I completely disagree. Do what you want to do with the info. an 8 minute tow up a grade is not real world towing...100+ degree outside temp. mountain passes with traffic 100s of miles of up and down hills with unlocked TC. All these other videos are just justifying Toyota, not showing how all these people end up with the over temp light coming on.

That is an excellent point. I never thought of that aspect. I have a 2020 Tundra and according to my dealer...I am Canadian....ALL CANADIAN Tundras have a Transmission cooler. Now some have commented that my dealer lied to me...i am looking deeper into the situation.

The boiling point of the fluid has nothing to do with how long your transmission will last. 250F the clutches start breaking down, the longer your transmission runs at 250+ the shorter the life of the transmission

WS is not a synthetic, it was designed 20 years ago so it's not even "modern" The transmission has evolved some but is basically a 2007 design (along with the engine) . If anything I am only relying on their previous engineering (and reliability of those years) that from 2007 to 2018 (11yrs) had a cooler on the same hardware as my 2020. I am not re-inventing the system, I am installing their own parts.

I like to see 220 max, anything over is not going to last long.

yeah, I left it pinned as I explained in my video. I live in a warm climate normal temps here are almost never below freezing and in the summer are usually above 100F in the day time. If I lived in the great lakes area I would not do that, I would use the thermostat. Living somewhere that never gets down to freezing you don't need a thermostat to warm up the transmission.

There is a threaded hole on the bottom left that I used a 10mm head bolt with the spacer. Aluminum is just from homedepot or local hardware store. I bent it on my bench vise by eye

no, aftermarket electric fans are not usually better than the factory fan clutch.

the transmission over temp light is still set at 300...nothing fundamentally has changed. If 300 is cooking your trans, so is 280.

Any tempature over 220 is cooking your transmission oil and will reduce the life of you trans fluid. Make no mistake this is bad for your transmission, there is no special sauce or any changes to the transmission to make it handle these temperatures.

they were expensive so I decided to keep it cheaper. There isn't any need for it. I have the rubber hose there for a year with 10,000mi on it and no issues.

1qt was too much I would say probably half a qt came back out when I performed the check routine. I didn't use the hose that came with the kit. You basically need two 6' sections of hose so 15' to be safe.

Sorry, your comment was answered in the video, It has a thermostat on the factory toyota part I added, I pinned it open for now. It runs at 175-180 after 15min of driving, like I show at the end of my video. If I pull the pin on the thermostat it is supposed to run from around 190-220. It is just fine.

look at the passenger side transmission. If it has the part I installed and the cooler lines going up to the front of the truck, then you have it. If you don't have it, you are just like the rest of the US trucks.

It runs between 150 and 160 but its 50 degrees here all winter long. If you live in a below zero climate I wouldn't pin the thermostat. I live were its 50-115 degrees so no need to have a thermostat on it. It still gets up to 200 in the summer when climbing hills out of TC lockup.

The thermostat is there for a reason to keep it at its normal operating temperature. If it runs to cool, it could do harm.

I would say that is most likely the reason. I did work to zip tie all my lines as far from the exhaust as possible. I have had this on my truck since mid June and I have had no leaks or melting issues with all of the factory heat shielding in place.

should be on your truck already as long as you have the factory tow package, other wise it should have parts out there that will work to add it for your year.

The paper work shows it has a transmission cooler as part of the tow package when I bought it in January. I had no idea the plate upfront was removed from the 2019-2020 until I saw the @TundraDude34 videos addressing a couple weeks ago. Toyota is now calling the transmission warmer a "cooler" as it does dissipate heat as well. Doubt the dealer will put them on as they aren't an option on any 2020 model.

This is what I plan on doing when I buy a 2021 Tundra TRD Pro double cab 6.5 ft bed, I want a aux cooler installed included in the total price of the vehicle I settle for. Toyota is going to end up with lots of fried transmissions in short order with this mickey mouse setup. I dont' want temps in the trans pan over 210 f . Should run unloaded around 180-190. Not sure What Toyota is thinking here.

@@davidcox2197 TFL used a 2020 Tundra towing in their uphill test in Colorado with the temp in the 30’s and the transmission temp got to 246 degrees. Imagine summertime.

@@Bushy556 Yep, we got ambient summer temps over 100 degree f half the summer here in Calif, And Nevada desert over 100 summers too, 4x4ing low range in Desert you would get some super hot temps. Toyota really screwed up there.

Yes I did, bushwhacker OE style. I put them on then used masking tape to outline where they touch. I then installed paint protection 3M film to where they touch the body and then reinstalled the flares so that they won't stratch the paint.

Should have watched more of your video lol. My 2010 came without the auxiliary cooler as well. I installed it and the factory engine oil cooler. I always wondered how hot the converter outlet would actually get, thanks to that TFL video we know now. I guess it would live, but I'm with you, over 220 is unacceptable.

I'm sure a shop will do this for you, it took me around 4 hours, so add that to the parts you are probably looking around $800-$1000 at 100-150 an hour labor charges. I don't know if dealerships will do this, but if they do figure double that price.

Any transmission shop will do this.

It doesn't matter unless you bought a cooler plate that has a directional flow to it. Most of them do not though.

mine is running 175 in the pan consistently. I am going to leave it like that.

It will come up to op temp quicker with the thermostat working. I just installed mine yesterday, it is opening at 190 and seems to stay open until it drops to about 178 or so...

more than enough, I didn't have any spills. most of it came back out of the check port on the pan when I warmed it up and checked the level

I have an update video on my channel that I did a month or so ago. I actually just pulled a 9000lb trailer 1000mi from the bay area up to Coeur D'Alene Idaho and I never got it over 200 and that was in the hills and it was 110F air temp outside in Redding. I think it works really well.

I don't know for certain, but I think they are the same transmission. The 5.7 is just a stroked 4.6 from what I have read but I don't know that for certain.

@@aprecision4013 thank you for the reply. Turns out the 4.6 is different. It doesn't have same spacer. There is a bracket holding heater instead of that spacer with o rings. It has 2 hoses coming from transmission to heater. I just installed an aftermarket coil and bypassed heater. 200 degree down to 160 degree. Well worth it. Thank you for the help!

My 06 Sequoia's manual says it is lifetime fluid and not to change it ever unless you tow frequently!

It doesn't matter, the cooler plate doesn't have a directional flow so there isn't a wrong way to hook it up. The thermostat open it flows through the cooler and then back to the return. No matter how you hook it up it will alway work like that.

I think if I went to any other truck in would be a 3/4ton gas either ford or chevy. I am not a fan of turbos, the 4l60e tranny, or dodge products. Smog made diesels unreliable and expensive to maintain. I don't really care if it does void the warranty (even though I have my doubts that it would since I am using Toyota factory parts) I decided to bet on a cooler running transmission and hopefully never need to replace it vs hopefully its still under warranty when its cooked itself. That being said, if you don't tow I wouldn't bother with this mod. I tow 7,000lbs from Bay Area to Tahoe 175mi with 10,000ft elevation change and you go up and down for 75mi with some grades as long as 5mi.

@@aprecision4013 Maybe not in USA with your laws, but in Canada you would be up crap creek for warranty. No consumer protection here. The stock setup shared the AC condenser did it not? That's what my Ram does anyways. The small rad you added is what I was referring to. It's a free country hopefully it works out for you, nice looking work anyways. The commercials keep telling me Toyota reliability is the stuff of legends, so maybe you won't have to find out anyways. Agree that stock set up would have fried itself. Dirty thing for them to do to save 100 per truck.

yeah it originally ran through the AC condenser. In the US there is protection for buyers that says that the failure would need to be proven to be caused by the mod. So if the parts I add cause it to fail then yes it would be my fault and not covered under warranty.

No, but if you get a leak in anything you installed and it causes it to lose all of the fluid it wouldn't be covered under warranty. If anything happens to the trans they would have to prove that adding their own factory Toyota parts caused it to fail

@@italRotty On the drivers side of the transmission there is a plug that says WS on it. You either have to pump it in or you have to get a long hose and a funnel from the engine compartment. I suggest watching a video on how to fill and check the level.

@@italRotty I didn't make a fill video because there are already plenty of them out there on youtube. Its really not hard at all. you add in the extra qt, warm it up to operating temp, and then open the check plug and let it drain out until it just drips.

yeah look at the chevy pump rub issues on the transfer cases, 90s-mid 2000s took them 15 years to change the design flaw that could have been fixed with at 10c piece of spring steel. Since it failed around 175k mi they didn't care.

175 for the toyota part from sparks, 75 for the plate kit from amazon, I already had everything else in my garage so maybe 30 for hose and oil and aluminum.

I don't know, but it doesn't matter the system is a loop. There isn't directional flow through the plate cooler so it will work no matter how it is connected.

@@aprecision4013 it certainly matters you want supply going into cooler inlet especially if/when cooler has internal regulating bypass + some coolers are also deffinetly designed to flow one way instead of some others that are bidirectional, than you would have to position cooler either horizontal or vertical inlet & outlets that becomes extremely important since most of cheaper ones don't have check valve type vents to purge air out especially do to expansion & contractions of trans fluid

@@aprecision4013 also there's some coolers that won't even flow correctly if connected backwards due to internal design & especially initial air stock in the coil. All good i gotta find the flow diagram or just do quick function test to find out the flow no biggie

@@ping_me1vp it doesn't matter how you hook it up...when the thermostat opens it sends fluid out through the cooler and back to the return. It will either flow clockwise or counter clockwise through the system depending which side of the cooler you hook it up to. Since the cooler plate is not directional it simply doesn't matter you are making a loop.

@@blaised7326 I bought it with the purpose of monitoring the torque converter temps as well as the transmission pan temps, which it does its job. I also have the water temp displayed as well as the ignition timing, I was curious to see how much timing it pulled when I run premium vs regular, haven't been able to tell. I don't usually change the settings I just keep them the same so it works for what I want it to do. There are other apps out there that work through your phone as well that will do the same thing.

I use a ScanGauge2 to monitor trans temps on my 2019 Tundra 4.6L. Works well once you get it set. I bought the 4.6L as gas is expensive in Canada.

Mike Sweers address this issue a year ago. Maybe you should see the video on Pickup Truck Talk on KZfaq. They test the Tundra under extreme conditions. More than what you tow.

@@04tundra1 Saw them before I even did this install. In fact, Mike and TundraDude34 were the first one along with DirtE30 that made me realize after purchasing that there was issues. So far Toyota says its fine I am very well aware, however, they won't give what their target numbers are for temp vs time, or a reason guys are getting overtemp lights turning on while towing, 300F where the overtemp light turns means you need at minimum a complete fluid change. WS fluid is not even a full synthetic, was engineered over 20 years ago and still the same fluid used in these trucks today. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. #1) I spent $275 and I WILL NOT ruin, damage or otherwise hurt this transmission at 175F. I MIGHT ruin it at 250F+ and maybe if I'm lucky Toyota will replace it if it fails, or I am out $4k plus it stranded me somewhere. I trust the DATA not engineers but you do you. Did you watch my video see the results at the end of my testing or did you just come here to try to put me down, act like Toyota engineers never make mistakes... I own a 95 4runner with a 3.0 3VZE that blows head gaskets every couple years and its in my other videos on this channel. By the way my crappy channel has more views in 2 months on this Tundra transmission cooler than all of my other video put together, people know there is an issue here.
