Yamaha's MT-07 has been a popular beginner option since its introduction, with plenty to offer to the more experienced rider, with a LA (restricted) and HO (full 74 hp) version on offer as a testament to just how good a motorcycle it is with wide appeal.
I take a look at the LA version which is LAMS legal here in Australia, or the equivalent to A2 and has seen styling and suspension upgrades, sharpening up an already great machine.
I look at the specifications of the Yamaha MT-07 and how they stack up on the road and give an overall impression of the machine, as well as my thoughts on where this bike fits in the beginner segment.

I started riding last November and bought an R3 as my first bike. After 10 weeks I upgraded to the MT-07LA and it was the best decision ever. I absolutely love it and feel it’s a much better bike to learn on than a ~300. By the time I get my unrestricted license in November this year, I’ll be ready for the MT-09. Thanks for your great review.

The MT-07LA is hard to beat if you basically want an unrestricted machine but have to go through the whole licencing process. It's a wicked step up again to the MT-09 though.

I've had my LAMS MT-07 just over a year now. I have put on an after-market exhaust just to give it a bit more growl. I'm absolutely loving it. It's not a rocket by any means when compared to an 09 but has plenty of torque and pulls well. Riding a bike is not all about top speed...it handles well for the suspension set up its got...sure could be upgraded with a couple of $k but it's fun to ride as it is. If I was going to keep it I'd opt for the HO specs.

Absolutely, I think people get caught up in the spec sheet max power figures, but it's all about the ride at the end of the day, and the MT-07 really delivers.

Hey mate, great review - you picked up another subscriber! Was wondering if you could weigh in here. I ride a Husquvarna Svartpilen 401 (same engine/frame as KTM Duke 390) and love it! Do mostly inner city/suburb riding and it fits the bill just fine. It weighs about 165kg (wet) and rated at 32kW (43HP) with 35Nm of torque. Could you possibly offer some comparison or insights when compared to the MTO7 LAMs (38kW, 57Nm, 185kg wet)? They are very similar in Hp but the MT07 blows it away in torque - which is arguably more important for real world riding situations - but weighs a good 20kg heavier. thanks much
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subbing! You've really hit the nail on the head there, especially as the 401 and 390s feel very very light, so you'll probably initially really notice the difference on the MT-07. It's definitely got a good amount of extra torque, and you won't need to rev anywhere near as hard to access it. The MT-07 is softer sprung, where the 401 is sportier and more taut in that department, while the light weight and front brake setup on the Husqvarna are a great combo. The MT does get a bit of criticism for that suspension, but for me, on rough roads it can be an advantage and a little more comfortable, where the sportier machines can get harsh. Overall both are great packages, but they are very different.

@alexmoring3900
@alexmoring3900 4 жыл бұрын
Moto Journo Kris so I need a bike I can use all year round as it’s my only form of transport so 1st place would be a cb650r amazing looks and reliability. However, It’s the most expensive option for me and a bit stuck on whether it would still be any good with the a2 restriction as I’m worried it’s so heavy and 4 cylinder it would be a bit sluggish, will it still have decent torque for city riding and overtakes or is it not really good for that sort of riding. But I do love a nice smooth ride but still want an excitement as such! 2) MT07 - everything is great but despite being slightly cheaper for me it needs a fly screen and an exhaust as the stock sounds awful so making it as pricy if not more expensive than the cb. Everything I love about the bike the smoothness, TORQUE😍 and how good it is on A2/ LAMS. My first concern however is the reliability. I live in the UK where salt eats bikes and rust happens very easily for about 5 months of the year And I’ve read on forums that the swingarms rust easily along with coolant pipes and for me I need something that doesn’t rust as I love keeping my bikes in tip top order 👍🏻 3) CB650F same as the R but about 1k cheaper but again a little bit heavier then the R and outdated dash and looks but cheap to buy and insurance and looks aren’t that bad 4) ninja 650 2017-19 Very cheap second hand good when restricted but not really my style and a very low seat height What a2/ LAMS would you go for ? out fo these and your personal choice. Many thanks Alex

@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
Yep it's pretty rough, I think it may have been even shorter back when I did mine, and it basically worked so that the certificate from the pre-LAMS course expired just before the L permit so you had to redo it! I know a few people who had that happen. Or they wanted to book the pre-provisional course and couldn't get one in time... If you can try and get it sorted as soon as the minimum three months period is over, that way you have a lot of extra time if there's any issues.

Is there a big difference in throttle and clutch feel between 2020 MT03 and MT07? Im considering moving up from MT03 to MT07 but I’m not sure if the MT07 might be a little too much bike for me?
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! There's quite a significant difference between the two. You may notice the gearbox is a little clunkier and perhaps a slightly heavier clutch, but nothing to complain about. Where the MT-03 is super smooth, with linear power and a very revvy nature the MT-07 has way more torque and is quite punchy. One of the points I normally make with the MT-03 is it's more like a in-line four, where the MT-07 is more like a V-twin. It has a really distinct character which I think is a big part of what makes it so popular, and that comes down to the engine and fueling. I do think it'd be a bit easier to get into trouble on the MT-07, just because it's a pretty decent step up in performance and a bit more aggressive with that torque. That is however all part of the package (and fun). How long have you been riding your MT-03 for now and how confident are you feeling riding?
@deliana8625
@deliana8625 3 жыл бұрын
I have only been riding my MT03 for a few months. I would say I’m a confident but cautious rider. I don’t plan on popping wheelies and will only use the MT07 for normal riding.
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
@@deliana8625 Honestly I'd probably recommend sticking with the MT-03 for a little longer, maybe see if you can get a test ride on an MT-07 for comparison though, so you've got an idea what you're dealing with. There's a lot of pressure at times to upgrade, and the upgrade bug can bite really hard (having fallen victim myself). Riders will often say they had to upgrade because they 'needed' more, but most riders never even come close to mastering a 250 or 300 before they step up. That said it's pretty subjective and the heart wants, what the heart wants!

Whats the difference between the (LA) and (A) versions?
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure to be honest, the LA/HO are specific to Australia as we have the LAMS scheme. 'A' might just be the standard version in other markets, as there's no LA and no reason to call one a HO or High Output as a result. I thought it could stand for ABS, however that's hyphenated onto some A models.

@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
@@Halloosenigenicz Technically speaking you're not allowed to modify LAMS machines at all, in my state at least. Letter of the law is super strict. But that would exclude things like crash protection even, here in NSW. It's possibly you could get in trouble for the exhaust, however that's generally the case with anything loud enough or fancy enough to draw attention. I've heard of a few people getting defected for stock exhausts even - so at a certain point it probably depends on how bad a day the cop is having or how much you tic them off! Whether they'd bust you for not riding an appropriate machine or just for the exhaust is a bit of a risk. If you're worried, always err on the side of caution. You can probably pick up a stock exhaust very cheap too. It shouldn't be a hard swap.
