The new 2021 #FordMustangMachE is the first-ever all-electric Mustang from Ford. While some enthusiast may scold at the idea of a Mustang SUV, the #MustangMachE is the first-ever true EV competition to Tesla. During the cold wintery months in PA, we put the AWD system and extended range battery to the test on the #MachE to see if the lack of a heat pump hurts the performance of this electric #Mustang

The range dropped because it's predictive and you are driving in the snow and doing donuts. See: "It's still at 100%." It's changing the GOM based on weather and your current driving style. ...Not just because it doesn't have a heat pump.

great review for winter driving. What are your thoughts on the Mach-E's camera's and specifically if you think Ford might make them more similar to Tesla's version of dashcam/sentry mode? Would like to see your experiences with the EA charging system for potential road trips.

Wow - this is pretty awesome. I wondered the same thing; does the 27 degree weather impact the range or anything else. I have never driven or reviewed this vehicle so thanks a million. Being in sunny (and hot) Miami, seeing the snow in the background is so cool. I appears to be pretty smooth with the stability control. Is it?
@wzDH106

I'd imagine the rolling resistance from all that snow/slush contamination has a larger impact in any vehicle over propulsion/battery inefficiencies. But we regularly saw a 20% drop in MPG figures with single digit temperatures in Minnesota, primarily with shorter runs (errands) where engine warmup times were extended significantly, thus less efficient. Increased friction within cold bearings sure didn't help, nor did the increased air density form the cooler air (aerodynamics).

I have never experienced a heat pump but here in Chicago winters I'm sure I would not want one when it's below 20 degrees. Although I crank the heat in my Bolt and don't care about the range hit. I'd rather be warm and then just plug in a day sooner.
@wzDH106
@wzDH106 3 жыл бұрын
Most heat pump equipped vehicles are equipped with an auxiliary resistive heater. The range you would recover between 25F to 50F would be significant. Between our two vehicles, the Volt with an 8 kW resistive heater, and the e-Niro with a heat pump (2-3 kW max), the efficiency gains are quite astounding for the e-Niro in mild winter scenarios. Can't speak for below 25F, as we rarely see such.

Regen in slippery conditions is not good at all. It can cause front tire lockup and hinder steering. Also having the anti lock activated every time you coast is not really optimum to say the least. (which is trying to counteract the skidding from the regen braking).

The Model 3/Y has an induction motor which offers more heat to scavenge from. The Mach-E uses two Permanent Magnet motors so a heat pump isn't super effective.
@wzDH106
@wzDH106 3 жыл бұрын
Inverters, DC/DC converter, as well as the onboard charger(s) generate heat. Heat scavenging can take many forms, the PM motors also generate heat, may not be as significant as induction, but there's still potential heat to be scavenged. Heat scavenging aside, a heat pump using ambient air will be 200-500% more efficient over resistive in mild conditions (20-50F as an estimate). Heat scavenging is icing on the cake, increasing heat pump efficiency where below freezing temperature usually close the efficiency gap with resistive heating.

Don’t think a heat pump would work well on this EV. Both motors are permanent magnet motor so there’s not much heat for the pump to scavenge. I think all the EVs with heat pumps have an induction motor up front. Also there have been complaints about the heat pumps not always providing enough heat for the occupants in extremely cold climates. Ford does need to improve the battery management, charging and maybe make more of the pack usable. I’m sure they’ll get there.
@wzDH106
@wzDH106 3 жыл бұрын
Heat pumps and heat scavenging are independent. Heat pumps in EVs and the majority of homes are air source heat pumps. They will transfer heat from ambient air into the cabin (below freezing as well). Heat scavenging is icing on the cake, using the heat pump (in addition to air source) to transfer waste heat from various electronics back into the cabin and/or battery.
@wzDH106
@wzDH106 3 жыл бұрын
Our Kia e-Niro is permanent magnet driven and equipped with a heat pump, but also has a form of electronics heat scavenging. We don't see much for winters in the pacific northwest, but I can verify we see little variations in efficiency between 25F to 45F, with range projections meeting and exceeding EPA figures. While many heat pumps will lose efficiency the further the temperature drops below freezing, the vast majority of heat pump equipped EVs have a secondary (auxiliary) resistive heating setup when needed.

It's unfortunate when reviewers get pre-production models (which is often just the reality given the timing and availability) because it makes a bad first impression when the infotainment system is almost always buggy. The ID.4 early reviews of the infotainment were terrible cuz everyone had pre-prod units, but I'm sure the final version will be fine. So for what it's worth I have a Mach-E and have had zero issues with the infotainment, connectivity, or phone-as-a-key.

The no noise part kinda kills it for me, motorsport wise. Still a great car though, I do think electric cars are the way to go. I used to have a focus RS and would take it to rallycrossing and drifting from time to time, and I think 1/3 of the fun came from the sound coming from the engine and exhaust.

I heard you say heat pump too many times. I happen to live in Canada, and I have a short commute. A heat pump would not heat up the cabin at all when it's the coldest month of the year. I would rather have instant heat from a resistive heater than have my passengers (kids) freeze in the car. I would stop there, but here's a short math segue. Modern ICE Cars ~30% efficient at transferring energy from the fuel to moving the vehicles mass down the road. From the remaining 70% a lot of that is heat... waste heat. We use this waste heat for the passenger cabin winter heating in ICE cars and hybrids. This waste heat usage (that you don't care for in summer) does not affect driving range given it was never being used anyway. Electric cars are closer to 90% efficient (maybe more) at transferring the energy from the battery to moving the vehicles mass down the road. In winter, I use ~30% of the battery energy for heat, which means it is not available move the mass. That means that between charges the car will 70% of the distance I expect the car to make with the same charge level in summer. I am 100% okay with that. EV's still have plenty of sacrifices, if you want to use them as a gas car replacement. They have a lot less sacrifices, when they are viewed as a different mode of transportation. If you live in places where the cold is less biting, and you want to pay $5000 more for a heat pump in the car, then buy the other car and not this one.
