Thank you very much to Mazda for letting me join them on their launch of the Mazda MX-30. From the outside I wasn't fully sold but after sitting in the MX-30 I think it's a strong contender to take on the Mini and the Honda!

This is actually a great and very underrated car. People complain a lot about the lack of range and lack of speed, but do most people (especially those living in cities) really need those? What i hate about most EVs is that they seem to be made in order to impress. Amazing acceration that no one really needs, huge eco-unfriently batteries to support those speeds and provide range that most city-dwellers will rarely actually put to use. And most EVs seem to lack other more traditional car features, like safety and comfort equippment. And mostly they have bad style. This MX-30 is pretty inside and outside, has more than enough range for city duties, especially as a second car, it is enjoyable to drive, it is confortable, it is very safe, and cheap to buy and run. What is not to like, seriously? And when you replace it, you won't have to throw away a huge battery.

Good review have had the pleasure of test driving this car and after testing a few evs now it does not disappoint if you can except the range it’s a brilliant car! Ride handling noise levels and tech are great and speed is more than enough without being silly, a really nice looking and well built car. Don’t be put off by the range.

I'm the owner of a 2023 Mazda MX-30 GS as my first EV because I like the look & finish and the way it handles. Price wise, it's pretty good as Mazda offers a 4000$ rebate and another 12000$ in rebates from the federal & provincial governments (Quebec, Canada). I have to say I use it as a second vehicle to do all my shopping/groceries/meetings etc... all within 40 km from my house and I won't use it during winter time (October 31 to may 01). I understand the range is said to be 160 km but I've done more than 180 km on rural roads & city roads and it was showing15% left! But if you're looking for a primary vehicle for all year around and long trips, you should consider an EV with a 360 km minimum range knowing that in winter time when it's really cold (-20c +), you'll be using "heating/heated seats/heated streering etc..." which will have a negative impact on the range (minus 40% +) and it will take longer to charge. 😊 Average of 16 kwh/100 km

Refreshing and nice to see a car review based on practicality and use more than power and battery capacity. Focus on the actual use of the car rather than the range you possibly could get out of it. This is important and often left out in car reviews made by men claiming to have knowledge and experience they are too young to actually have. EVs are also a lifestyle and to enjoy it fully you need to be a bit dynamic in your thinking and adapt to range, temperature, your time to use and review what you really use a car for. Not what you dream you could do with it. The point where your car dreams, what your family actually should use of money to keep and maintain a car, and the practical use of it is what's important. Everybody can use a credit card or take a bank loan, but to keep a family happy and have a practical car is maybe what should be more in focus for people rather than scream "Tesla" after any other suggestion? What a rant.... I needed to write this....

Thank you for watching and commenting. That’s the way I look at things... if you work from home and go to the shops a couple of times a week, do you really need more than 100 miles of range? Especially if it’s your second car.

Great review, Tish! I agree that Mazda make some of the best, of not THE best handling vehicles in their respective segments. The MX-30 looks pretty neat as well, and I like the RX-8 like rear suicide doors. Interesting that most EVs you’ve driven have only had manual seats. Now you’re making me feel bad that my new Defender has semi-manual seats. 😂 Looking forward to the next one!

@@AutoSocialUK I really like everything Mazda is doing at the moment. Hands down the best interiors in their respective segments, as well as solid driving dynamics, and world-class design. My Defender S has that JLR calls “12 way semi-powered front seats,” which included manual forward/backward, manual up/down, manual headrest adjustment, and a power backrest with 4-way power lumbar. You need to get the SE or above for full power seats.

@@AutoSocialUK presently I do approximately 150 miles a week (3 days at work) then I don’t go too far in this Covid age.....I do have a 7kw home charge point and in the 2.5 years ownership have never used public charging, I have special EV “overnight” charging rates and set pre-cabin heating for frosty mornings. I tried many EV’s (not hybrids) before settling on Hyundai, people do thing my range is too small but this car was built by sensible science before engineers got pressures to increase range on EV’s. That is why I do appreciate what Mazda has done with the MX30. I can see 5.5m/kWh on screen in the summer on the Ioniq, my opinion is that packing in more batteries and increasing weight then needing a more powerful motor etc reduces the m/kWh figure, I will not buy another ICE car now and compare EV driving with a V6 petrol, smooth effortless driving . Hope you find my opinion helpful....? 😊

Mazda knows how to make good driving cars. Really dont like the rear door and space, otherwise it would've been perfect for the price because of the depreciation as you mentioned. Here in denmark its currently at about 20.500-23.000£, with 0 to very low miles on it, which is pretty good considering our prices are some of the highest on cars.

This car also need more leg room in my opinion. Boot is ok but would liked to see space to store cable. Regarding range well Mazda MX-30 is getting rotary engine extender that will charge battary and increase the range to approx 375 miles.

It's a great "city car," I think. But in Texas, where our cities sprawl, the range is too small. Here, many commute 60-80 miles daily. But for others who live closer to work or only need a car to run errands, its a very good choice, as long as merging onto freeways is not a necessity. Nice price and low depreciation. I'm looking forward to seeing other Mazda EVs. BTW, why are we now referring to "vinyl" as "vegan leather"? It is derived from crude oil, or always was albeit that its now much improved. (Unless this is an alternative made from plant based raw materials, calling it "vegan" is misleading, I think.). Nice review!

In a way, the argument that the normal travel distance is within its range, is true and that lugging less weight/battery is valid. But then in Australia at least, the argument that it is cheaper etc doesn't work. The only trim is the top spec trim and it puts this in the same price as a tesla/polestar, with much lower range/space.

I share with you my experience after 4 months driving a MX30, which is absolutely a very gorgeous car, inside-out with outstanding finishing quality and very comfortable and pleasant to drive. BUT WHAT A SHAME!!! Technically as an EV, MX30 is useless! When the temperature drops to freezing point or even near, driving range on the highway drops to 110KM (140KM off highway) and worst is the charging time, it takes over 3 hours (in cold weather) to recharge the battery on a CCS 50KW/h charging station and not 45 minutes as announced by Mazda! You need to stop 3 hours at a fast charging station to be able to drive less than one hour!

Among the loveliest EVs on the road but too high in price for such small range. Mazda should have made it a 40KwHr battery. Also its kind of a compliance car - an electrified version of a fossil car. If they had put the motor in the back there would have been a lot of trunk space in the front. In reality I think they have not procured enough batteries and it shows. Because this is such a nice car you will really want to bring it on a trip.

It’s a terrible design that harkens to Mazda’s overall architecture, that is to say one that imitates the proportions of a RWD performance car: long bonnet (for longitudinal engines) and a small cabin. It has always made Mazdas lookers, but impractical. In this EV application it’s just ridiculous. There’s no engine under that bonnet. Why is it so long? On the flip side, the cabin is absolutely tiny and the electric battery in the rear, so the cargo space is tiny too… absolute rubbish.
