2021 Starboard Foil boards compared / Wingboard Vs Hyper Foil SUPboarder

When we heard that Starboard were bringing out a specialist wing foiling board as well as their existing Hyper Foil board, we weren't completely convinced! But after using these two board types for over a month we now understand why Starboard have done it, and see their place in the market.
In this video we compare and understand why these boards are designed like they are and feel like they do. And more importantly we find out what the limitations are of the two boards, and who they're best suited for.

Great comparison. Getting my hands on the Hyper foil here in the U.S. hasn’t been easy but this video convinced me it will be worth the wait. The Lite Tech is such a great option which hopefully drives the market to more reasonable prices. It’s insane to me that people are paying $1800 for so many of these boards.

Yeah the price point for the lite tech is great and one of the best value boards from a top brand for sure.

Thanks for the solid comparison. Do you think Starboard are still catching up, or have jumped ahead, with these shapes? Normally when new sports come along there is a lot of early innovation then people converge on the best designs...for winging it seems that quad concave plus low nose weight/volume is that design (Naish/Takuma/Quattro/KT/etc) so how come Starboard, who were late to the wing party, are on a flat bottomed wing board (sticks to water on lift off, smacks the water on landing) and a fat nose? Do they know something nobody else knows? Would love to see a Starboard / Naish / Takuma head to head...when you have time!

Hey, Yes there's so much going on at the moment with board shapes and foils. We are enjoying using all the types of boards at the moment too. There's no real bad ones. We would love to do a full test with a few brands and this is something we will look at into the future for sure. Thanks and happy foiling Reuben

Great information, I would love to hear as a final comparison what other board, wing, SUP, compares to the equipment being highlighted. Say for example the starboard wing board is a close equivalent to a Dave Kalama or Blue Planet board. As you get more and more evaluated inventory this will be easier I know. Is the Naish Hover series a close match to the other Starboard surf board. Cheers Ishtar

Hey Ishtar. You this will be good to do. Will does Highlight some of the boards in his SUPboarder pro video. But one thing is very clear the starboard with their deep channels do make a massive difference to paddling the boards in a straight line compared to the other boards we have used so far. We will keep riding kit and learning as always. Thanks Reuben.

Hey great review! How do you compare the 2021 starboard hyper foil 6'4 to something like the armstrong 5'11 sup /wing board? Do you also think the armstrong 5'11 is better as a wing board than a sup foil ?

Hi Michael, the Armstrong board is a really good board, I would say because of his foot strap set up it is actually better in the surf than it is for winging because you cannot have two front of set straps. I would say the Starboard is better for winging and very good for surf but it be could become even better if you could have a central offset strap like you can on the Armstrong board. It's almost like both these boards could learn from each other 😉 thanks Reuben

hey. I've got a 7ft Starboard Wingboard (not used it yet) do you know what the extra leashing point on the nose is for? maybe to keep your ankle leash on top of the board for less drag? It would be interesting to hear what you thought of the bigger wingboard in the surf. I'll definitely be trying mine. Maybe easier to catch waves than your 5'8 review board?

Hello John, the forward leash plug connects your wing and board. Then you do not need a connection around your arm and there is no tangling of the leash around body parts. You will anyhow be connected to the wing through the board leash. Some riders like this option , others like the traditional wrist direct to wing connection.

@@SupHQ any advice on fitting 2 front footstraps? I've taken some of my starboard windsurfer and there doesn't seem to be enough of a gap in the middle to fit them both.

Hi Starboard! Is there anywhere I can see a visual representation of that front point being used by wing leash. As I can’t find anything and really can’t imagine how it would work, or what sort of leash would be best? Thank you! Just bought the 6.7 last eve and chomping at the bit to go try it out!!!!

I’m curious as to how the width compares to other boards. The difference is enormous compared to many other boards at a full 3-4” inches narrower. Does this make these boards feel unstable?

Hey Carson. They are a little bit more unstable but not as much as you think. Having a foil sticking out the bottom of the board helps! But really its the glide that these narrower , longer boards have, thats the main thing. Paddling into waves with long boards for example is so much easier. I use loads of foil boards but any less than 5'7" and they are really slow to paddle. There are loads of pros and cons to all shapes. Thanks Reuben

@@SUPboardermag Awesome, my hyper foil is on the truck and arriving this week! I thought I would take my wing out with my regular SUP while I waited for the foil board but I never actually did, too busy boat foiling instead but I can’t wait to get this thing out next time it blows!
