Horsepower selection is not as easy as it used to be. The EPA regulations create a barrier of sorts just above the 25hp level.

Agree Tim, been in the diesel industry for a decade now. That being said, my view of emissions has changed from my previous thoughts. With the advent of "common rail injection" and modern electronic engine control, my opinion is we don't really need an aftertreatment system so much on new engines. Common rail injection is so efficient, and can be done with such precision, as far as timing/pattern/pressure/rate, that you should not really see little if any particulate out of the exhaust. I feel like we need to change the laws, to reflect the current technological level we're at in 2022.

I agree with your take on emissions. I’m a truck driver and the emission regulations since 2008 have made all trucks so unreliable and costly to operate. The ironic part is that fuel economy is at best the same as pre-emission engines but usually worse when comparing apples to apples. Just another example of why government regulations should be far and few!

The DOC is used to “light” the dpf catalyst when in regen mode. Each manufacture tends to do it a little differently due to patents. Most highway truck engines now are paying Cummins to use their design as it has proven to be the best system.

I agree with eliminating emissions for tractors up to 50hp. Many of our smaller tractors are only used occasionally. I am sure we can all agree to plant trees. Nothing soaks carbon like a tree while it’s growing. Once mature you have the carbon trapped, harvest and repeat.

Just a little bit of clarifying information about the regulations. The Nonroad Compression Ignition (diesel) standards were first proposed in 1995 (Clinton administration) as a result of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments passed by Congress and signed by George Bush. Regulations are not developed overnight, and the development of these regulations would have started during the Bush administration. These regulations required a phased in approach to the regulations with the first phase (Teir 1) being required in model year 2000. Depending on the size of engine, there were between 3 and 5 phases until we got to Teir 4 requirements in 2008. Additionally, it's important to note that these regulations only address what is often referred to as criteria pollutants (particulate matter, hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen). The criteria pollutants have all been found to have direct health impacts to humans at elevated concentrations. Thus, the reason they are regulated. The nonroad compression ignition standards (or currently Tier 4 standards) DO NOT regulate carbon dioxide which is the primary issue in the climate change issue.

Also fair to note, this scenario is somewhat of a chicken and egg, we regulate to control issue, the regulations drive innovation and technology. Would the development of common rail injection have occurred without the push to do so? I am reminded of this when I am sitting in traffic behind an old muscle car, antique car, old diesel truck when you can see, and smell the exhaust....and I think....jeesh, could you imagine if every car and truck did this as to how bad it would be with the population density we have now?

Sub 25hp engines have changed some with Final Tier 4 standards - mostly via timing, spray patterns, etc. The requirements for these engines are not nearly as strict as >25hp engines, mostly from a particulate matter (smoke) standpoint. DPF equipped engines still have a DOC as it oxidizes the fuel injected in the exhaust stream during a regen to burn off the soot in the DPF. DOC-only solutions like Mahinda still use EGR, and likely higher EGR rates, to control their NOx from the hotter cylinder temperatures. EGR is a bigger engine killer than any other type of after treatment. DOC-only solutions can also suffer from poor transient response and have no 'headroom' for any possible, even more stringent, emissions standards.

I bought my first tractor last summer after watching many of your videos, Tim. I Considered Mahindra, JD and Kubota, and really wanted a turbocharged Diesel engine. After researching and looking at the offerings of the aforementioned competition, my decision was to buy a John Deere 2025R TLB. The added expense and complexity of the aftertreatment hardware over the long term was my deciding point. My residential property is about 4 acres, and so far 25HP has been plenty. I really had fun watching your videos about the various accessories while researching tractors. Pallet forks are really useful, and I’m contemplating grapples now. @jagx234
@jagx234 2 жыл бұрын
@@wishkah4369 There are some very key performance differences. The engine is indeed the exact same. It has higher hydraulic pressure and also a higher flow rate from a bigger pump. Higher rated axles and lift capacities front and rear, more ground clearance, faster ground speeds, etc. Much more maneuverable and many thousands less than the large frame 2 series. The large 2 series are empirically better tractors in all capacities, but price and fitting in a certain tightness of space are downsides. If I had a larger building for my animals, and a bunch more money, I would've gotten a 2032 in a heartbeat. In my opinion, having had a 1025 and 2025, the 1025 is more suited to more people, and very capable for homestead tasks.

Chris… I have 10 acres if hardwood property. My tractor is the Kubota equivalent (BX23S). I don’t have forks but want them. This is an upgrade from my old BX24… so over the past 20 years, I have accumulated 12 implements. My grapple is my favorite. It is so useful I have it on my loader twice as much as my bucket. Clearing brush, turning compost, carrying limbs and logs, loading timber on my trailer, burning brush piles… there are so many tasks that get done with it around here, I honestly don’t know how I got them done with out it! Enjoy your baby tractor. It is the perfect Swiss Army knife for survival on a small acreage homestead!

Let’s talk about that diesel particulate: It is microscopic charcoal. Guess what charcoal does? It absorbs carcinogens in the combustion byproducts. Why should this matter? The diesel particulate is so small that our noses and airways don’t capture it. So what happens when you inhale diesel particulate? The microscopic chunks of carbon lodge in your lungs. Once in your lungs, that particulate releases some of those carcinogens into your blood stream. So this isn’t just about CO2, NO2 and other atmospheric issues, it’s about the tractor operator and those nearby being exposed to carcinogens. This is to protest YOU. So before you go lobbying Congress to relax the rules, give that some thought.

Heya Tim. Great video as always. I just wanted to point out that you are comparing apples to oranges in your "opinion" section. The DPF and other emissions equipment is not meant to counter CO2, so that comparison simply isn't relevant. It is to capture and/or prevent particulate matter from being released into the atmosphere. In other words, microscopic ash. That ash is extremely harmful to respiratory health. I don't know if you've had the "pleasure" of traveling to India or China lately, but I have and the smog is so thick in industrial areas like Shanghai that you can't see more than a block down the street and everyone wears a mask to filter the air (this was pre-covid, mind you). Personally, I quite enjoy having actual clean air to breathe that doesn't cause smoker's lung in a matter of a few years from just living there. But that's me. I definitely agree with your point that is matters little what the U.S. and EU do for the sake of climate change if the rest of the world isn't doing their part, but there's also the old adage of two wrongs don't make a right. I believe that you have a good point in that the EPA sometimes does go overboard for the benefit conferred from a given regulation..but I'd rather have that than the environmental hell-scape being created in places like China where the environment is considered in the pursuit of economic development. A happy median should be the goal of course, but if there has to be an over-shoot in one direction...my vote is for the direction that doesn't poison my home while the details are being worked out to find the optimal solution for the long-term. This is obviously a much bigger topic than a single video or comment can address..I hope I have a chance to grab a coffee or a cheeseburger with you sometime and debate it properly. Have a good one!
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 2 жыл бұрын
Well, sounds like we sorta agree on the happy medium. I’m certainly not advocating a ‘free for all’. I just think a $3000 tax on a 27 hp tractor is senseless. Pretty sure common rail alone would burn pretty clean.
@garycox7508
@garycox7508 2 жыл бұрын
@@TractorTimewithTim yep it's pretty steep and definitely a bummer in a number of ways (and a major reason I bought a 25-hp 2025R). But if it was easier and cheaper to do without it, you can bet they would be doing so. The DPF itself isn't a mandate..the resulting particulate-free exhaust is. The manufacturer is free to implement whatever solution they want to achieve that. Therefore, they must think they have a competitive advantage by implementing DPF versus a more expensive design of the engine that would run cleaner.

They want you to think that they care about you and down time, but it’s all about money. I won’t buy a new tractor just because of the dpf I’m happy that my 2012 model tractor has nothing. I yanked the dpf off my truck 7 years ago because it was nothing but problems. My state tests vehicle emissions every 2 years, no inspections just exhaust readings and it passes every time with actually lower readings then when the dpf was on. That should tell everyone that these “treatment“ systems are worthless.

One of the issues I have seen with the DPF systems is that operators are trying to run new DPF machines the same way they ran the pre DPF machines. They want to run the machine at a lower rpm which generates more soot and then leads to more regens/ plugged filters. My dealer told me to run the machine at full throttle and the DPF system will perform well and it has. Do I like the systems? No. Are they going away? No. If I can change my operating style to match what the machine needs then it is a win win because I will have less down time and increase the longevity of the machine. I am not saying that DPF is a reliable system I am just saying we can do things as operators to help them be less unreliable. Just my thoughts. Great video Tim!!

Tim I've watched your channel for a long time, but I gotta say I can't disagree more. The argument of, "why are we trying to save the planet when no one else will" doesn't sit well. I agree with you that the current solutions are a big hassle, and they do add cost to a tractor, but we can't just go back to the way things were. DPF might be the stop-gap we have for now but, without something better to replace it, it's what we have for now. I'd strongly encourage that we keep trying to find a better and more cost effective solution, but growing pains will be there along the way. Just going back in time won't fix today's problems. Dumping our crap in the river might get rid of our... well crap... and be cheaper than installing a state regulated septic system but what about the people drinking from the river downstream? Who's protecting you from the people living upstream of you? I think we can do better than "every man for himself". I don't want to ramble too much, but I'll say this. Reducing or eliminating fossil fuels is more than just that graph you posted. It's about power. Right now, whoever keeps the oil flowing has all the power. When you don't need the oil anymore you take their power away. If the world's petroleum was reserved for high energy machines only (rockets, planes, tanks) and all consumer products moved (or nearly all) away from petroleum, then the US can produce it's own gas and break away from foreign influence. I'd say that a positive thing. As adoption grows and competition follows; like most goods and services, the prices will decline in response. Once the US doesn't need foreign oil anymore it can put economic pressure on places like China to say, "we only do business with green countries" and together with other green countries it will eventually twist everyone's arm to follow. But Rome wasn't built in a day, and a cleaner future won't be either. What is worst that could happen by trying to clean up emissions? We have clean drinking water, and air to breathe.. On the flip side, if we do nothing, and we were wrong to do nothing we all die... 🤷‍♂️ by flood, drought, starvation, or mutiny.

Always a Good presentation. You just happen to be at the Most Advanced, Cleanest, Quiest,& Fuel Efficient Tractor Manufacturers Dealership. The Massey-Ferguson system is ALWAYS the BEST. If it is not "PERFECT" they make it better next year! Only the 4707 ( PURE CHINESE) is their only " want-to-be" Massey-Ferguson - just a BIG dumb entry-level unit & cheep in price. The common-rail computer controlled fuel injection, Diesel Oxidation Catalyst and particulate filtering , make for SUPER QUIET Operations & SUPREME Fuel Efficency. The Massey-Ferguson line up SHOULD make up much of your New material on your show! Thanks for the great Vidio Tim & Christy. GBWY.

Diesel particulate has less to do with climate change than human health. It's being increasingly regulated because long term exposure is strongly associated with a number of cardio-respiratory diseases. NOX pollution is both a greenhouse gas and a respiratory irritant leading to increased incidents of conditions such as asthma. CO2 is primarily a concern because of its role in climate change. ...There's a bit of the tragedy of the commons going on with regulations. A handful of farmers running dirty engines makes no real difference but when there's the potential for millions in a relatively small geographical area, everybody is going to be regulated.

DPF has nothing to do with CO2 emissions it removes soot and other particles from the exhaust that are harmful to human health, think of Asthma like symptoms. Do you remember acid rain? It is pretty much not a thing in North America anymore because of government regulations adding emissions systems and forcing fuel companies to make cleaner burning fuels. If anything emission systems cause more C02 to be emitted because they cause restrictions that means you need to burn more fuel for the same power. So if you want clean air for you and your family to breath you should probably be pro emissions...

I agree with your rant. That said. From looking at horsepower requirements and what I wanted to due, I went bigger then I needed. Here's why I want around 35 to 38 horse, now my semi has 605, of that Cummings says, 100 of it is used to now push the exhaust through the d.p.f. system. With that in mind I went with a 3046R. I didn't ask if that 46 is crank or corrected for any lose the filter choking down the system has cause. Pittsburgh power had also gotten to a 0 back pressure exhaust system before these regulations went in place. A gas engine needs some back pressure, a diesel does not. They had 14 liter engines being driven with thought getting 12 mph, in a semi that's a dang good mpg but in a areodynamic truck they were 14 to 16. Now those areo trucks are getting 8 to 9 with all these restrictions in the exhaust and the million mile mark for an engine overhaul is gone. 600,000 is the new mark. And now the overhaul that cost 18,000 is 35,000 ish. In a sense they have turn an over the road truck into a disposable unit as overhaul rebuild cost are nearing half the price of a new truck, done the right right way. Right way being fuel lines, engine, clutch, transmission overhaul plus other parts all at the same time.

Agree with you Tim! I have been working with Diesel engines before and after Tier 4 Final emissions. I have seen Tier 4 Kubota Diesel engines fail in under 20k hours. Repairs costing the customer 3k to 5k are not uncommon in Tier 4 compliant exhaust systems, and engines upwards of 20k. We currently maintain a fleet of 5.9l Cummins engines without Tier 4 emissions. The maintenance costs are extremely less in those trucks. Some of the Cummins engines achieve 35000 to 40000 hours before major rebuilds or replacement. Point is, from my perspective as a technician, manufacturers scramble to put these emission systems together without a lot of R&D. This causes a great deal of long term maintenance and product failures the end user must pay for. This does not even take into consideration the added fuel costs required to run these newer emission systems. Question of the day is, How can you burn a third again as much fuel and it be cleaner for the environment? Some things in life just do no add up!

Great info, Tim. I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while. I’ve been seriously considering a sub-25 hp machine with a bigger frame for my next machine. I really want the larger frame size and loader capacity, without worrying about the issues of the new EPA regulations. But at the same time, I don’t want to undersize my next purchase and be disappointed when it could struggle brush hogging up a grade. After a large purchase like a new tractor, I certainly don’t want to have buyer’s remorse. -Chad

I have a Mahindra tractor and have had no issues other than a pto seal. That being said the tractor doesn't like to idle for extended periods of time. I had the check engine light come on a few years ago when practically new because of it. I called the dealer and was told it is because of the exhaust and to just run the rpm up for a bit then when you turn it off it will reset. I have never had an issue other than this a couple times but it makes sense that at idle it isn't creating enough heat so long idles can make it unhappy lol

Agree 100% even in a 18wheeler the DPF systems are still putting out the same emissions as before possibly more do to the extra fuel consumption. It's just putting it in 1 spot now. The regen cycle is extremely pollutant. It has been shown to put out 95% more particulate matter then when running at normal times. Then every 200,000 to 250,000mi if the truck is running 100% correctly and not idling very much. The particulate filters has to be serviced and cleaned in a shop. This costs around $2200 to do every 2 years or so. And it is a messy job to do. And every 500k to 750k mi if you're lucky it will have to be replaced at around $5000 to $7500 depending on the brand of engine. And all they do is hold the matter to be discharged in the air in 1 spot rather then all over the country. This comes from an expert in Cummins truck engines while the system was 1st put on trucks. And research done by Cummins Diesel since.

Tim, I fully agree and thank you for saying it. California has now passed a law, effective in 2024, prohibiting all "spark ignition" engines 25 horsepower or less. This will have a great effect on such products as string trimmers and chain saws that depend on light weight, often two cycle, engines. For a lot of other applications from cement mixers to generators similar power diesel engines are already available. They are more expensive and weigh more. What the lawmakers did not seem to understand that these small diesel engines generally produce more emissions than the gas engines. Another problem area is emergency generators. These often use natural gas. Natural gas or LP gas engines are still spark ignition and will also be banned.
