Old money for SUREEE!! I mean, taking into consideration how HUGE Succession was this year? Rich fabrics, monotoned neutral looks, tailored-looking timeless pieces. I think you're totally right. I feel like we're going to look back on this trend predictions next year and its gonna be green checks across the board. Ballet aesthetic totally surprised me, but I am hyped at this prospect. I have a sheer wrap skirt kind of thing that I usually use as a pool cover up that is going to get some seriously creative use this year--thanks to this video! Also, when it comes to ties making a comeback, I think we could be seeing them as headbands again. I don't really connect with the punk aesthetic, but I totally use them in a 60s/70s kind of way, tied like a thick headband in my hair, or used almost like a scarf? I can't post pictures in this comment section, so I have to trust that you know what I mean. The only trend that I am completely hoping you're wrong about is skirts over pants. I am truly in denial. I know that you are right, but I just want better for us.

I've got two theories as to why the old money aesthetic is trending. 1. Maybe the embrace of the old money aesthetic is a backlash against the gaudy nouveau riche aesthetic that was trendy in the 2010s. Being wealthy is always a goal for many in society, and in the last decade that appeared in fashion as conspicuous consumption. Logomania, particularly the Gucci logo; Collecting and showing off your designer bags. Not so subtly posing w/ your expensive watch; It wasn't limited to old symbols of wealth, we saw this with new trendy brands like Supreme as well. But since the industrial revolution created a new wealthy merchant class, when previously wealth was inherited through social status such as aristocracy, this behavior has been looked down upon as vulgar by those born into the upper class. The thinking goes: Only those who had been born in a lower class would be so desperate to let everyone know they were wealthy, those who were born wealthy show it not through their material possessions but through breeding and a subtle understanding of the values of the upper class. Hence, this old money aesthetic doesn't rely on particular brands and displaying them like in the previous decade. It relies on a particular style that's been established as proper. People might be tired of the last decade's loud displays of money, and start to see them as tacky. But of course, the desire for wealth is eternal in our capitalist society, so they look for new ways to revel in it, which brings us to to the old money aesthetic. 2. Maybe this is just fantasy escapism. For more than a decade, many young people have been loaded w/ debt, not able to obtain high paying jobs, & kept out of home ownership. The pandemic created even more poverty & job loss. So the allure of this aesthetic is in the thing that seems so unobtainable, makes life so difficult if you don't have it, & so many dream of: financial stability. So many people constantly deal w/ the stress of not having enough, the younger generation may feel that they'll never be able to pull themselves out of their situation. If you had been born into old money, you would always have that security and safety, you could live without the fear of what might happen if one day you didn't have enough money, you'd be free to pursue your interests and passions. This might be why this aesthetic is resonating w/ people

I agree with this years fashion being similar to the early 2000s. Chaotic neutral, cleaning out your closet; trying to make different styles work, but still in limbo between so many trends. I think there will be key pieces teasing around spring, but not really see it until fall (like the collegiate rugby trend you talked about, though isn't that when it usually comes out around 'back to school' time)? I like that leg wear is being the focus of creativity, that's always fun because it is usually so short lived.

You didn't mention it in this video but I have seen discussions of the skinny trend coming back. I'll start by saying it's sad that women's bodies can go in and out of fashion. But it's the reality, and it's interesting to analyze why. I think in this case it's the 180 degree fashion cycle, where fashion turns to the complete opposite of what has been trendy in the last decade. Like the 70s being dominated by a return to nature after the space age 60s, or the neon excess of the 80s after the earth tones pallette of the 70s. In terms of women, there is usually a specific body that's seen as ideal, and a corresponding silhouette. In the past decade it's been that extreme hourglass, slim thick, Kim K type of body, and a very tight silhouette to show it off. I predict we're going to do the 180 degree fashion cycle. (The trendiness of baggy pants after skinny jeans reigned for so long is a sign it's already started) We have actually seen this exact scenario before. In the 20s, the ideal body is small chested & thin to suit the boyish, straight lines of the flapper silhouette, right after the S curve, pigeon breast silhouette of the Edwardian era. In the 60s, the ultra skinny Twiggy body is ideal to suit the A line, childlike mod silhouette, right after the large chest/tiny waist/full skirt New Look of the 50s. And in the 90s, the runway model, heroin chic silhouette comes into fashion, right after the athletic, tall Sports Illustrated model body is ideal to suit the strong shoulders and oversized silhouette of the 80s. Will history repeat itself yet again? My prediction is yes. My comments are so long I had to separate them. That's why I love your channel, someone else who won't shut up about fashion 😆
