2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Review: Towing is Easy, Payload is Lacking

New for 2022, Jeep brought back the Grand Wagoneer name after a long hiatus! The looks are controversial, but the 2022 Grand Wagoneer can WORK, rated to tow up to 9,850 pounds (10,000 pounds on 2022 Wagoneer). Payload, unfortunately, suffers compared to key rivals Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Maximum payload of the 2022 Grand Wagoneer is just 1,380 pounds. Is that enough? Here's how towing with the 2022 Grand Wagoneer went for Jake and his 20' enclosed trailer.
The 2022 Jeep #GrandWagoneer comes with a 6.4 liter V8 making 471 HP and 455 lb-ft, paired to an 8-speed automatic and standard four-wheel drive with low range.

FYI, the 6.4 HEMI in the Grand Wagoneer is the Apache 392 found in SRT vehicles, not the 6.4 BGE that is found in the HD trucks.

Just to clarify the 6.4L in the Grand Wagoneer is the SRT variant not the HD truck engine. They are related but the SRT tune is obviously more aggressive. They've been wonderful engines, extremely durable and don't mind revving. I understand what you're saying though about refinement. Dealers are now able to order the all new 3.0L HO TT I6 with even more power and the smooth refinement you're looking for. Enjoy your reviews!

It isn’t just a different tune it’s a completely different engine. The company has even said the only thing they share is size they don’t share anything else. The SRT 6.4 is a beast. The truck one is just for reliability.

Is there a way to turn off the rear seat displays from the drivers seat ? Not an issue for me but the better half doesnt like the reflection they cause at night and she has to stop and go to the back seat to turn them off, and then if you shut the motor off, they will come back on when you restart. seems a little odd.....

With a payload of only 1500, you can never approach 10,000 towing with a family and kids and gear. The 10K towing claim with such a low cargo capacity is misleading and dangerous.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Correct. That is, unfortunately, how every SUV's tow and payload ratings tend to work out. It is really tough with any large SUV to carry a full load of passengers AND tow at or near the maximum ratings. This is why, despite all the hand-wringing both when new and even now, the Ford Excursion was a popular choice for a very certain crowd with very specific needs.

I spent the past summer and fall driving the Grand Wagoneer, the Navigator, and the Escalade back to back daily. The high output 3.5 EB was laggier than ever and the 10 speed easily confused. The Jeep’s 6.4 made great noises, but consistently lost stoplight Grand Prixes to the Cadillac. The driving dynamics were floaty. The Cadillac, even with its horrid infotainment (still better the UConnect) was the car of choice. If your concerned about lots of revs while towing - try towing with Ford’s 6.8 V10. 3000-4000 RPM all day long! The points you raise about payload are excellent, and often overlooked. SAE J2807 has gone a long way towards helping consumers make informed decisions, but your typical salesperson has little to no grasp of its meaning.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 2 жыл бұрын
Trying to have a salesperson talk to you about towing is perhaps the worst thing you can do. Nearly none of them have any idea what to talk about. So, here we are. Interesting that you drove all three and picked the Cadillac. It's a great option, we love the Navigator because the EcoBoost is just so so good with a trailer hooked up. Unhooked around town, the 10-speed can make that drivetrain feel a bit confused. Driving in Sport mode (which should never be a requirement) helps it out a bit. And YES to the old Ford V10... it didn't care about the revs or the weight behind it or if it was running or not. Work truck engine that did anything or nothing and always got 11 MPG doing so.
@robertmyles211
@robertmyles211 2 жыл бұрын
@@OutMotorsports even more interesting is that I work for on of the others. As for the V10, if you were kind to it "decent" MPG could be had, though it's a relative term. I managed 15-16 on a long highway trip from NJ to KS, but that was keeping the speed down and using the cruise extensively. Towing my heavy enclosed (about 9800) I usually got between 6 and 8. The lighter aluminum unit nets about 8 or 9.

Does this Grand Wagoneer have the Max Trailering option? We’re looking at a Wagoneer but none of them for sale in Canada have the max trailer due to a supply shortage. We have a 24ft travel trailer so I’m unsure if we NEED the max trailer option or if it’s fine to tow regardless. I’m out west so there are some mountains to drive
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Depends how much weight you plan to tow. The big upgrades on the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow package are the 3.92 axle gearing (to help with acceleration), limited slip rear differential (to help with limited traction, whether you have 4x4 or not) and heavy-duty engine cooling. Unsure what they do for additional engine cooling but probably some mix of a bigger radiator, two-speed fan, and possibly a bigger oil cooler or something. Can't find those details. In any case, with a 24' travel trailer I'd personally want the HD trailering package.

How did you install your own brake controller? Any chance you could post a vid?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 2 жыл бұрын
The trailer brake controller used here is a Tekonsha Prodigy RF, which plugs in between the truck and trailer and is not "installed" per se. Jeep does offer a built-in trailer brake controller that is very well tied-in to the truck and its capabilities, and we recommend using that if possible. Our trailer was having issues and using the Prodigy RF fixed the lighting problems, which we later figured out (after this review) were related to a trailer wiring fault.

As mentioned earlier by someone else the 6.4L V8 is not the heavy duty tow motor, that's only available in the custom order only 3.0L I6 HD high output motor. The 5.7L V8 can tow 7,850, the 6.4L V8 can tow 8,250, and the HD I6 can tow 9,850.

Did the vehicle you used have the max trailering package? The local dealership website lists all the vehicles as 10,000 pound towing capacity but none of them have the max trailer option? Can they still tow 10,000 without it?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 2 жыл бұрын
Per Stellantis' spec sheets, the non-Grand Wagoneer is rated for up to 10k pounds of towing (any 5.7L, 2WD or 4WD) where the Grand Wagoneer (with 6.4L) is rated at 9,850 pounds. Guessing they have an overall GCWR and the extra weight of the bigger engine offsets the tow capacity by 150 pounds - total guess and not confirmed. But if you want an approved 10k tow rating, you're buying a 5.7L Wagoneer.

You should have a standard trailer plug on your trailer, not sure how it doesn't fit, unless it's been dragged at some point.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
The trailer plug is a standard 7-pin. The Grand Wagoneer would not operate the trailer's running lights - this has been true of both a 2022 and 2023 that we have tested. Using an in-line trailer brake controller helped in this video but not in the 2023 Grand Wagoneer that we filmed this past January. It is not a problem with the trailer, as we have used it successfully with 25+ tow vehicles of varying age and brand. This is a JGW software issue.

I’m torn about the whole payload vs trailer weight marketing. On one side I think people should be aware and calculate out based on their wants or needs, but kinda agree that yeah manufacturers should try and be more transparent and highlight that max trailer weight is with minimal occupancy in the tow vehicle. Great looking vehicle though! Weird issue with the TBC though. Hope that’s just a preproduction type issue there.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 2 жыл бұрын
The payload thing is just tough given Navigator is rated for ~1,600 and Escalade is rated for ~2,000 pounds (per the OEM websites). What I don't want to do is get in a crash with a trailer and have an investigation reveal I was way over stated payload. Not only will it negatively affect handling, it's a big liability concern.

I feel like the 6.4 was just so Jeep could one up Cadillac and their 6.2. Eco diesel seems like an obvious choice for the GW. These are road trips machines first and foremost and better mileage will be appreciated.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 2 жыл бұрын
It's a big, heavy vehicle and the 6.4L is the best thing Stellantis has that can be stuffed in the engine bay from a numbers perspective. The 3.0L EcoDiesel is a fine offering but lower on power, and while the Cummins *might* fit, it'd be even more expensive for a very expensive SUV already. We've heard rumors of what will happen drivetrain wise and for now, we'll just say that Stellantis knows they need some other options.

I’m not following how you think an eco boost is better than displacement. The complexity while towing always causes detaining (retaking timing and boost). Do you hate being American? Hope the Canadian viewership gets you where you want to be! Little diesels don’t work either. The ford 7.3 gas Godzilla is proof of that! It’s amazing!
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 2 жыл бұрын
Hey David! Your American vs Canadian comment was truly hilarious, be sure to high five yourself. Ford's 3.5 EcoBoost is a great, effortless towing partner in our (several thousand miles of) experiences. We have countless racetrack friends with plenty of miles on their F-150s and Expeditions as tow vehicles, with minimal issues. Just going off of what we've experienced, and it does better real-world MPG than a big V8. In the world of $100k luxotrucks like these, the overall experience is better than this 6.4L. Small diesels also have worked well for us and others, though emissions headaches happen, as seems the case with any modern diesel. We're with you on the 7.3L Godzilla, had that in a F-250 Tremor and really liked it. Can see why people would choose that vs. the PowerStroke given cheaper buy-in.

Honestly, if you're towing more than 50% of a vehicle's rated weight, you should be using weight distribution. That's not a Wagoneer thing.
