The Kia Sorento PHEV is a good for larger families looking for an efficient people mover. However, with its limited EV-only usage and less-than-stellar highway fuel economy numbers, you may have better options.

I drove from the lot after buying this in 20-30 degree weather 400 miles away all highway. I got 26mpg on highway but I had drained the battery within the first 30 miles because didn't know to hit the hev button. Now with 60 degree weather and using battery I am basically never touching gas. It's the 80mph that gets it back down to 26mpg. If you stay 60-70 you get 29-35mpg fully loaded with people and even a cargo trailer I put on the hitch. It seems like you pay for speeding big time. I love the car anyway and now basically use no gas in town.

I sure hope you can redo that in a few months when it’s about 60F and fully charged. For comparison,I was able to average 31mpg on a rented previous generation 2020 Grand Cherokee with the standard 3.6L V6 for 1200 miles from Hartford CT to Des Moines! That was avoiding toll roads and keeping near the speed limits.

Nice video. 26 mpg at 70 mph that seems a lot. 9L/100 km where I am. We cruise at 130 km/h (80 mph) That would push it to 10 L/100km. Suprise your international now. Subscribed.😁 I have an HEV version on order.

Assuming you're in Canada, 130km/hr is not a cruise, that is fast lane and any faster a radar cop would snag you. Also need to remember this test was done in the winter.

I live at the Mexican border and a hybrid or plug is a sweet deal. We do hours a day on bumper to bumper traffic and border wait, so that's when we save. Highway, yes, not the best, maybe if you only freeway long travels a diesel is better, but if frequent stop and go traffic are your thing, get a PHV o hybrid. In in SoCal where I live (San Diego/ Tijuana mexico area) gas is $5.80.

I dont think long distance is where this vehicle shines. Its around town car and that's what plug in hybrid are all about. I drive about 35-40 miles per day and most is not all of that is on Electric only. I'm in California though and it's not 22 degrees ever where I live. I fill up about 1 time per month, not too shabby. My mpg right now per the car (same tank of gas now for almost 4 weeks is 138mpg, because I'm mostly Electric.

1:43 - wait what? Other videos I have seen of this exact same car mention that you CAN run in EV only mode (assuming the battery has juice), and that the engine will kick on in certain situations, and then more frequently as the battery drains down. That being said, your test is a bit misleading. Running the car with the battery completely drained is nothing more than an MPG test on the 1.6T engine, which is fine I guess. Except, the vast majority of the time you will drive with some amount of juice in the battery, which WILL help MPG. The comments are about this PHEV are very negative because I don't think people are fully understanding your testing methodology here.
@DailyMotor
@DailyMotor 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of your points, but I would argue it's more informative and more repeatable to test PHEVs on the highway without juice in the battery. For example, we have the Tucson PHEV right now. Tomorrow, I'm going to drive it on a 700-mile trip. I will only get 30 miles of EV driving out of that 700 mile trip. So I care much more about what MPG I'm going to get on the 99% of that trip. I do agree that most people in their daily driving will have EV help.
@HugoAguilera
@HugoAguilera 2 жыл бұрын
@@DailyMotor I don't want to be rude, but I really don't think that's how it works. PHEVs are much smarter than that. They're not going to prioritize EV-only driving until the battery is dead and then run solely on fuel, even on the highway. If that were the case normal hybrids would get way worse MPG because their batteries are tiny. PHEVs work similar to Hybrids in that they are intelligent about how they use the battery and how they assist the engine. I look forward to your 700+ mile trip and will surely watch the video because I am very curious about the results (not many channels are testing this), but I hope you do it with a full tank AND a full battery so that we get a REAL sense for how the car behave on the highway, and what kinds of MPGs to expect :)
@DailyMotor
@DailyMotor 2 жыл бұрын
@@HugoAguilera I appreciate the discourse! I actually wasn't planning to film it, but I'll do a little informal video testing how the full battery depletes over the trip in automatic mode (Tucson has three battery modes, automatic, hybrid, and EV). I'll be curious as well to see how it acts. I will say most PHEVs I've driven drain their battery on the highway and then switch to normal hybrid mode unless you force them into a hybrid or EV hold mode. We'll see what the Tucson does!

@@HugoAguilera you're correct, the video poster doesn't understand how the PHEV works. Most Hyundai and Kia PHEV owners agree that they are very much getting the 70-80 mpge, even using lots of highway miles for testing. If this poster had the battery charged, at least some, it would have been in the 30+ mpge even in cold winter conditions, even at 70mph. I trust the vehicle owners who actually invest the time to understand how these vehicles are supposed to operate.

We own a Sorento PHEV in Germany. Same engine as in the US, but a few upgrades here in Europe. Head up display, memory seats, bench in second row. 7 Seats are optional, we own a 5seater. MSRP is much higher here (63.900€ = 70.000$ including tax). But you get 6.000€ rebate for PHEVs 2/3 sponsored by government, 1/3 from the manufacturer. (For BEVs you get 9.000€ rebate.) We paid 48.000€ including tax September 2021 to get an instant available top-trim ("Platinum") Sorento PHEV from the dealer 6months old with 3.900km on it. First 10,000km (=6,215 Miles) we did 50% commuting mainly electric, charging every night. 50% long distance without charging at all. Average was 5,5l/100km = 42.9 MPG. That are real world data. With Putin's terrible and cruel war on Ukraine gas-prices almost doubled in the past weeks. Diesel costs 2,30€/l at the moment = 9,59$ per Gallon! We are really happy to drive full electric in every day life. That saves a lot. The Sorento PHEV is a wonderful spacious and comfortable car, saves gas/carbon/money and brings luxury like a Volvo XC90 or Audi/Mercedes/BMW at a reasonable price. In Europe we get a 7 years warranty including free online services and navigation updates. Well done KIA!

Sure, 26mpg may come off as bad however ya'll have to remember it's 22f. Cars in general do worse on MPG at that temperature and Hybrids lose about 30% MPG when the weather gets to 20f. I'd imagine that it would do a decent amount better if the weather was closer to 60f or above.

I heard the Sorento can not drive ev only mode on the winter because I does not have a heat pump. So if your running your heater the engine has to constantly be running. If that is true it's a deal breaker for me. The outlander and rav4 can produce heat without the engine running.

@anthonyg8435
@anthonyg8435 3 ай бұрын
@@joonapuro8055 My point is if the vehicle does not have a heat pump for heating efficiency then it either has a resistive heater that takes a significant amount of energy to heat the cabin or it doesn't have anything and uses the gas engine to heat the cabin. So without a heat pump the winter range is significantly limited in EV.

I seriously considered this vehicle because I needed more cargo capacity than my 2019 Kia Niro PHEV (which was phenomenal on mileage) and 4WD, but ultimately chose a CPO 2020 Audi A6 Allroad. I've been averaging 28 mpg with a mix of highway, city, and winding mountain road (paved and unpaved) driving - on the 200-mile highway trek back from the dealer, I averaged 36mpg at 75mph. The Kia is nice and well-equipped, but lacking in performance (plus every dealer wants at least $5K over sticker).

I own a 2021 Sorento Hybrid (not a plug-in). Average 35 MPG mixed city/hwy driving. I find these types of tests to not be very helpful not just because their methodology is often suspect, but also because especially with hybrids you need to really look at long-term averages.
