2022 Kia Sorento PHEV Review: Plug It In or Pick the Hybrid

The 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV takes all the appreciable benefits of its gas-only predecessor and adds a bit of all-electric driving range as part of an efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain. More crucially, though, it qualifies for tax rebates that make it as affordable as its conventional hybrid sibling.
Those looking for a family-sized SUV that can cover short trips under battery power would be well-served to see what this plug-in Sorento has to offer. But without regular charging, the conventional hybrid could be the better pick. AutoTrader.ca Road Test Editor Dan Ilika takes Kia's midsize plug-in hybrid crossover for a spin to see what its new powertrain offers - and what it demands.

I'm not sure I understand the issue with finding a charging station with a PHEV. When you're not at home to charge, it operates like a normal hybrid. There is no need to go anywhere to charge.

As I mentioned in the video, the Sorento PHEV burns quite a bit more gas than the Sorento Hybrid once its battery is depleted.

Is the reason the HEV button isn't called "battery save" because this is a Hybrid when it's not just electric and thus by nature uses and recharges the battery... unlike the Wrangler that is a gas-only car when not in ev mode?

kia connect sucks,i have in my Seltos and it works ok till it gets cold then it just doesn't,sometimes the car will start but the app tells me it didn't and as for the piano black I keep a small swiffer in the car and give it a quick wipe and it still looks good ,good review

Thanks for the kind words! What a bummer about the app! I’ve had problems with it every time I’ve tried it; Hyundai’s, too (the bones are the same, they just look different). I’m a big fan of keeping a duster in the car! I do the same!

I’m considering buying this car. Is there an option to keep it in EV mode only until the battery runs out?
@danilika9420
@danilika9420 5 ай бұрын
Indeed! There’s a button on the console to toggle between the different settings, including EV mode.

There is a battery save button - thats the HEV mode. I also would disagree that the infotainment system does not stand out - it clearly does with the screen size, 360 view monitor, blind side view screen and many otger features.

Hi, Alex! I believe I used almost those exact words - that the hybrid mode is essentially a battery save mode. But my point is that it’s not as self-explanatory as an *actual* battery save mode. I also don’t remember saying the infotainment system doesn’t stand out! Maybe you could point out where I said that, but I feel like I heaped quite a bit of praise on the infotainment system. Cheers!

Is it possible to just have electric mode and no gas at all? Or does it use some gas also always in electric mode? What settings should I use if i want electric only!?
@danilika9420

There's a selectable EV mode that allows the Sorento PHEV to run on nothing but the battery until it's depleted.

@@danilika9420 Yes i selected the EV mode on my Sorento 2023 PHEV. But I see that the gas meater is declining anyway. I live in Sweden around 10 deegrees celcius outside. I selected the driver only on fan and maybe 17-18 degrees in the cabin. I only drove in the city pretty slow. But anyway its not all electric. Even though it says EV mode on display gas is using. I see that the km is declining.

@@danilika9420 I have the 2017 Hyundai Sonata PHEV. While I generally love the car, it does kick on the engine whenever it needs heat. From an engineering perspective, I get it. An electrical-resistance heater would add cost and consume a surprising amount of the very limited battery power. Why do it when you have such a ready source of waste heat? If it is true that the Sorento has a resistance heater, that would be the first I've heard of. The extra-annoying aspect of the Sonata system is that there is no 'vent' setting. To get more than minimal fresh air, one must guess at the temperature setting that will cause the automatic climate control to NOT activate either the AC or the engine. Usually, I just turn off the air and crack a couple of windows.

It make sense since the PHEV version is 450lbs more with the same 1.6t as the regular hybrid. Once you deplete the battery your stuck transporting a 450lbs dead battery. Also the second you want to regulate the climate (heat/cold) the motor is going to start, idle and burn petrol (no electric heat pump/AC). This vehicle is actually much worst in fuel consomption for long distance than the regular hybrid.
