Keep in mind that you need to run gas engine to get your vehicle heated (true for all PHEVs). Same for AC. It means that during the cold (which is 6 month here in Canada) or hot (which is 10 month in Florida) the real gas usage will be 6-7 l/100 (not 3 as advertised). Considering 30K km per year and current gas rate, it will take at least 4 years to pay the price difference between gas- and PHEV EX+ models.

Dude, you have no idea what you're talking about. Might be true with the Kia (not sure) but my Rav4 Prime has a heat pump so AC and heat can be used without the ICE engine.

The Sorento PHEV is the reason why I traded in my Kia Telluride top trim AWD (SX prestige) for this car. I love everything about the Telluride except the 18mpg average as I drive locally most of the time. This is my third Kia by the way, the first one being a 2017 Kia Sorento SXP AWD. I love Kia!

Looking for a phev - I sat in a Toyota Prime Rav 4 which I was really excited about, and was crammed against the roof. I'm 6'1", but I guess I have a longer torso, I know for some people my height the R4P is ok. I'm looking seriously at the Sorento - I love the roominess, no problems with height. I plan on driving it a long time, so I'm not worried about resale value.

Not bad it's a decent PHEV SUV. It's larger than a R4P and the gauge cluster is better. But in terms of performance and technology the R4P is still a cut above it it's also cheaper if you can find one MSRP. I feel like 40 miles per charge is good but I wish it were a little more like 60 miles per charge. What kind of charging system does the Sorento have? One of my gripes is the R4P's slow charging and you need to but they most expensive model to get faster charging.

@pinfoldjimbo

I drove both. The Sorento is definitely more lively from a handling standpoint, similar to some of the German midsize suvs, but the highlander has a softer suspension that will soak up bumps a little better at the expense of body roll and handling. The cabin is very quiet, and generally seems a bit quieter than the highlander, which may partially be because the highlander cvt drone can be quite loud. I bought the Sorento PHEV. Both are really good vehicles.

Good alternative to the Rav4 prime if you can't seem to get one quickly enough although I feel lucky that it only took 2 months in June 2021 to get mine now. If both had equal availability I would still not want to lose the performance, reliability, and EV range of the Rav4 prime, there is a reason they are so sought after.

@@rkgsd oddly though, the size difference is not that huge. You get seating for 1 additional person in the Sorento, but you sacrifice cargo space if you're carrying 5ppl. You get an oddly shaped space for cargo in the Sorento with 5ppl, and barely any space if you're carrying 6. With the rav4 prime you get 70ft³ with seats folded, and the Sorento provides 75.5 ft³, not a big difference. Granted, the Sorento provides a little more leg & shoulder room for each passenger, but everything I've read combined with the Rav4's popularity indicate that rav4's passenger space is acceptably comfortable. The one thing that would have made the Sorento compelling for me, the 2nd row bench - 7passenger option, is not even offered in the PHEV. This decision by Kia baffles me. The gas engine Sorentos as well as the PHEV Sorentos sold outside the US have a 2nd row bench. 🤷

@TheLearningCatalystCoach
@TheLearningCatalystCoach 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your needs. If you drive less than 30 miles a day, those drivers report using only one or less than a tank of gas per month(yes, month!). Even in expensive electric states(mine being CA)...at am average of .20-.25 kWH at home, you're saving a ton on fuel even with a nightly charge of that 30+ mile EV battery. What's unique about these is the low amount of Amps need to charge it via standard 120 volt plug (not installing a level 2 home charger). For me, I have 2000w of solar and a battery system, that even at 8-10 hours of charging this will totally handle it with my less than 3KW max load.

I rented the Rav 4 (Not Prime) for a whole week. I don’t know if the Prime feels incredibly different but the Rav 4 was completely uninspiring. The interior looks very dated and the cloth seats very dull and cheap looking although passively comfortable. The engine was very noisy all the time. The stock radio was not great. I’ve test driven the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento and they are both just night and day better vehicles than the Rav 4. If you love the Rav 4, don’t even bother test driving one of the above cause it will ruin the Rav 4 for you. I would easily go for the Sorento or Santa Fe over the Rav 4.

Hi Shari, these high tech vehicles does not give me the comfort that affordability is a priority. They make it that we don’t go to gas station often but we will be paying a fortune to buy these vehicles and maintain these vehicles on long term. I am in my 40s and don’t see giving up my simple naturally aspirated engines anytime soon mainly for affordability. Come to think of it a Lada Niva will be very economical to own and operate without any electronic sensors and computers. 😂 I missed out in buying those and hiding it in my backyard for future use. These car manufacturers can’t even get their TPMS sensors working reliably during cold and hot temperatures and the likelihood of them making reliable and trouble free cars with full of computers and wires is very very slim. Vehicle nowadays have more wires and computers than a Russian rocket.

Hi Shari, I love your reviews! I’ve been taking a hard look at the Sorento, and here’s a few more details/thoughts: - The HEV/PHEV versions have less ground clearance than the gas versions (6.8” vs 8.2”) to accommodate the batteries; however, this is probably why there’s no loss of cargo space (the RAV4 Prime loses about 3.5 cubic feet of cargo space compared to its ICE/HEV siblings) - The HEV/PHEV versions are manufactured in South Korea, resulting in minor differences with the American-made gas versions (e.g. only the PHEV EX+ and SX versions have “ambient mood lighting”); see some Kia Hyundai Channel videos for more details (e.g. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJ5mesllzJrKk6s.html ) - The weights of the various HEV and PHEV versions vary considerably: the lightest HEV, the LX, weighs 4,120 lbs, while the PHEVs can weigh up to 4,550lbs. I assume this makes the heavier versions somewhat less fuel efficient - An advantage the Sorento has vs the Telluride is being significantly smaller and so easier to park/manoeuvre: the Sorento’s length and width are 189”/75”, while the Telluride clocks in at 196”/78” - I'm annoyed by how you have to go all the way up to the EX+ trim to get adaptive cruise control, and like you, I'm really annoyed by how each trim level has either a bench seat or captain's chairs in the second row -- I wish I each trim level allowed a choice - I'm not a fan of all the piano black plastic in the cabin given how it will show dust/fingerprints/scratches Happy holidays!

I own a Sorento, and unfortunately I am quite disappointed. The transmission is very laggy, and when you run out of electrical charge and have to drive on the gas or hybrid mode, the car does not quite live up to my expectations. When you step on the gas the RPM surges but the car goes nowhere and then after a few seconds there is a surge in speed. The climate control is not very impressive. I have the prestige model, and was very disappointed to find that there was no rear controlled climate panel. Also the car gets very drafty when it’s below 40°, so if you live in any of the colder areas in the country this car is going to disappoint you. The technology is quite nice. But overall, I am not fully impressed. I would like to try the Toyota RAV4 prime, but I am quite attracted to remain in the Kia because of the third row.

@@badshahyoyo624 In a vacuum such a statement might seem true. Fact is the Prius has been around forever but most people would gladly take a Kona or Niro Hybrid or PHEV over the Prius because they are just way better vehicles. The Sorento and the Santa Fe also better than Rav 4 Prime but the Prime does get 10 more miles of EV range. Nothing to sneeze at but if 31 miles of range meets your daily commute requirements, the all around better vehicles in those two overcome the extra EV range.

So you review a car you repeatedly fail to mention in previous reviews. That’s wonderful. Hyundai/Kia have been making hybrid vehicles for a long time too. Just because you don’t know, doesn’t mean that its “unproven”. Please try to do some research. If you want 3 rows and a PHEV, I believe this is your ONLY option. Personally, we bought this car because it’s beautiful, drives wonderfully and is a perfect family “wagon”. The Telluride felt “too big” and wasn’t as fuel efficient as I’d like. The Toyota and Honda dealers in my area are also engaged in price gouging. You should probably factor in the crazy markups in your “value” calculations

Ehhh... Right now, the only hybrid tech that is known to be reliable for 10+ years is Toyota's. Kia _may_ turn out to be fine, but only time will tell. The other thing people really have to consider is that the cost of upscaling to a hybrid or plug-in hybrid is often _way_ more than they'd end up paying in gasoline for the duration of ownership of that vehicle.
@pinfoldjimbo

That is less true when you factor in the tax credit for the PHEV, but you are somewhat right. The decision may also be based on trying to consume less gas overall - even at a higher cost. The problem is that most dealers are asking for a large premium on top of the manufacturers premium for plug in Hybrids, the average is around four grand, and iv'e seen it as high as six grand, that eats up the tax incentive/rebate and then you still have to pay the Manufacturers additions, which can be fifty grand or more in some trims. Next, for what you pay at yhe dealership for a Korean or Japanese plug in like RAV4, please do your family a favor and buy a 2 or 3 year old Volvo SUV. But recharging while driving is not actually a thing. You don’t buy a Plug In Hybrid to drive it without ever plugging it in thinking it will recharge the engine on its own and give you PHEV range. It just does not work that way. When you don’t plug in a PHEV it operates as a standard Hybrid. You’ll get 32 MPG in standard Hybrid mode with the Sorento or Santa Fe if you don’t charge it. I do agree with you that reviewers should explain how PHEVs work when you don’t or can’t plug in daily.

@@JonMoralesLA Recharging while driving (or braking) IS a thing in the regular hybrid model (not the plug-in PHEV). I think the regular hybrid is what John Ortensio is talking about.

Instead of reading off the spec sheets, why don't you tell us something about the car from your test drive? You talked about the blind spot cameras. How about showing how (well) it works? You talked about the highway self-driving feature. How about showing us how well that works. Come on , this is a car review, not a spec sheet review. Speaking of spec sheet, you mentioned Kia has a great warranty, but you didn't say how great exactly. Now that is something you SHOULD read off the spec sheet while you were at it.

I never understand why this guy is crying about turbo in all of his videos. He makes videos just to make sure that people buy Rav4 only.

He is a smart guy to understand Turbos are garbage. Honda uses them and it is poor choice for reliability…naturally aspirated engines have less moving parts than Turbos.

PHEV is a good first step. ⚡️ 🔋 KIA sucks. Ugly, cheap and massive depreciation. Cars for low budget bottom feeder purchasers.
