2023 BMW M2 driven - the best M car yet? Autocar

Who doesn’t love a small, sporty BMW?
Ever since the launch of the fantastic 1M in 2011, the firm has proven time and time again that it can apply the same treatment that made the M3 and M4 so popular to its more compact (and cheaper) models.
In fact, these miniature M machines tended to be something of a different breed to their more powerful brothers - they were more playful, more agile, and we’d even go as far to say that they were just a bit more fun.
That could be about the change though with the launch of this - the new BMW M2. Unlike its predecessors, it shares a whole host of equipment with the more powerful models further up the food chain. It’s heavier, too - at 1725kg, it’s 150kg more than the old model.

That front end is horrible. WOW.. That front bumper looks like an ebay special and they forgot to send you the center grille. I warmed up to old bucktooth but this thing.. The front and rear bumpers look like they came from a cheap body kit.....

@@chamaldealwis9 Exactly. Weight is a variable that affects performance, but if performance meets expectation, it doesn't matter what the scale says. Most of the people claiming that the weight is holding them back don't have real intentions of buying, anyway.

But I guess m many in these comments would rather trade the first option for the sake of having a technically superior spec sheet as if that holds more weight than the result.

honestly i think it will grow on people. saw one in person the other day next to a an m4 and it looked better/more aggressive (and I purchased a g80 xdrive almost 2 years ago).

you people need to understand that the old design is old..., you get used to that old design for long time.., this design is new..,you have to understand that the modern looking sports cars from others like mercedes or audi doesn't made a car look this much aggressive and also looks sporty and modern at the same time...,i would say they redesigned it based on minimal looking modern sports car for road...,for 2023 and upcoming years this will be the one represents the title of sports car for road..., it looks good enough

There is a charm in front engine RWD cars that mid engine cars just don't have, but that was the old M2, by this review the answer to your question is clear. Any way, in my country they are both extremely expensive cars, the new M2 is about $181,000 and Cayman 4.0 GTS priced at $234,000.

I sold my 2020 F87 M2 Comp that I track on a regular basis for the new G87. Hands down the new G87 feels more capable on the track while the F87 is more playful on the streets. The G87 better track manners is why I sold my F87.

It may be one of the best, but it damn sure ain’t pretty. All the new M cars have to be gotten used to, like the huge M3/4 grill and now this Lego car. When are they going to make a car that all say instantly, wow, it’s gorgeous. This looks like something you’d only take out at night so no one has to look at it!

I MASSIVELY prefer this BMW to the look of the M3/M4 and previous M2 which had a weird proportion and waistline and looked abit childish. This is far more grown up and distinctive to me. I realise im likely in a minority and im bloody loving it. Not that id have one over an Alfa Romeo anyway!

For the same price I could get 991 911. Would you suggest a ten year old 911, or 2023 m2 as a daily/GT/track car? I currently have an nd2 Miata so either will be a big upgrade (GT wise)

I have one of these cars which I've had since July 22. What are my thoughts? I have the manual fully loaded. I prefer the transmission in my 718 Spyder. Other then that it is okay...........

It has a lower power to weight than the last M2, has a bunch of nonsensical styling cues that its own designer couldn't defend, somehow drastically cuts rear headroom, and unbelievably goes up in price to M4 base levels. I get BMW asks its journos to chill on the critical feedback but damn guys. I admit it has a beautiful interior finally, and the S58 is a gem over the S55 (provided you are OK with the peakyness). But damn. Should we really reward this behaviour? With the F series cars I thought we'd be heading towards less weight, not significantly more.

Why shouldnt a genuine M car be more £££ than a Cayman Besides which the Cayman is not a rival. 2 seats and no real practicality. Plus this is an M car, the Cayman in its price range is not a GT department product.

@@ironbobby9445 I don't buy it. Infotainment tech doesn't weight much (if it does it's badly designed). Safety gear hasn't advanced materially in the past 5 yrs, it should not be heavier. Basically BMW just cost cut this car and using heavier materials. No other explanation makes sense.

Well that’s a rarity…a new BMW who’s styling I like! Just perfect pocket rocket looks. A lot of hints to the original E30 M3 there, especially those flared wheel arches. Still, I’d go with the previous gen model due to its better agility.

A lot of hate here in the comments. There is nothing more controversial in the car world then a new BMW design. Man I hated the E46 compared to the E36. Now I look back and even I think I am nuts how could I not like the E46? But! I bought the new M2. I pick it up next week 900+ miles from my house. I am flying in and hitting the dealership and then heading back. It's ugly I know! But so what my first girl friend but, she taught me many things! 😝

A Cayman 4.0 GTS starts at $97000 USD so I have no clue how this supposed journalist is trying to be impartial in this claim. If he’s trying to say you could buy one used for that money, sure, I could get a used Countach for $75k if I shopped around long enough couldn’t I? Apples to apples please, and stop talk about “British B roads”, I’ve lived there out near JAC Molesworth and B roads may as well be tractor trails as England hasn’t paved a road since the 60’s.

This car is absolutely hideous. Way too heavy for what it is. They took away the fun, added weight, and ugliness. They ruined the last BMW drivers car. Steering is also terrible now. Then there is that crazy high price tag. Nope. This reviewer clearly hasn’t driven the prior gen M2 Comp

I’ve owned a m2 for over 6 years, been patiently waiting for this new one and it’s a bit of a let down. Went to see it in person at north Oxford bmw last week and I won’t be ordering one.

Is why 80’s m cars are so strong on price! Had a m3 csl. Sold for 19k 1 owner. Spent 17k over ownership, M3 UHP private plate, new splitters costing 10k, and now feel I shouldn’t have!
