OMG Watership Down honestly it’s one of the best novels and British films of the 20th century it molded me as an adolescent and I steamed the film again recently but Art Garfunkel’s Bright Eyes song and scene I just 😢😢 so even though I have the graphic novel I don’t want to re-visit the sadness and emotional pain of that unforgettable film .

It's always difficult to know what to say when somebody else has gone through an incredibly tough period. Anything I could think to say always feels hollow. What I can say is that I've always taken great pleasure from your videos and I continue to feel excitement when I see you've uploaded a new one. I join the ”Anything I say is hollow” club, if you may. It is the frustration of not being able to put into words what you feel inside. I suggest the Finnish way of communicating as a solution. Picture a nice campfire and it’s the only source of light keeping the surrounding darkness few meters away. Then we step out of the dark and into that light sitting down beside the fire. And we all arrived from separate places walking paths only known to us. As we sit we acknowledge each other with calm and understanding faces. We know the hardships endured. They are not vocalised. Anything said would be hollow. Then we turn to look at the fire. Fire looks back at us and its dance, that holds within something ancient, terrible and certain, enchants us. We all look in silence. Someone pokes the fire, making sure its dance lasts. We all look in silence. And when enough time has passed we just know - discussion is over. Someone grunts and we all rise. Calm look is given, maybe a tiny nod. Then we all walk away each through their own paths. There is a feeling of lightness that comes from sharing your deepest thoughts and troubles. It was a nice talk. Of course this is just the stereotypical view of Finns that foreigners hold but it’s not true. We would never really do this around campfire. We have saunas for it. Angshuman, despite hard year you have chosen mighty books to read. Impressive and interesting. The only book I have of these is the Ubrigand album but it’s still in to-read-pile.

Hello again my friend. So sorry to hear about your troubled year. Hope you can overcame all the grief and find solace in the passion that we alll share. As usual an excellent choice of books. The Obscure Cities cycle is old acquaintance of mine since the 80s. Essential reading for anyone at least, a little interested in this beautiful art form. I find it hard to understand how come these titles are not regularly available in English, even more in large format hardcover editions (those that really do them justice….). James Sturm and Jordi Lafebre are definitely in list too…. Keep those good books coming. Cheers👍🏻👍🏻

I'm so happy to finally see for myself what The Obscure Cities is like. And although future volumes seem unlikely now (at least in this form) I'm glad I have these to re read. Ok, so - major spoilers - but I'll still try and be coy. Did you earlier get to a place where you could ''cheat'' because an answer seemed to be right under your nose? If you cheat there, you get punished - it's a trap. But part of the deviousness here is the next time you have a similar situation, you don't cheat, because you remember the punishment. But if you do, it works! So my short answer is I cheated, but I fully believe you are supposed to, and I think you will see what I mean if you do.

I don;t know if you've ever caught my livestreams, but in one of them I open a package from Jason Shiga in which he sent me a number of smaller comics and zines, including a Spongebob one that I didn't understand contained work of his! I also did not realize that he had a piece in Comics Squad (a series I had been interested in when I first read of it but had completely slipped my mind until right now) so thanks to your note, I just ordered #2! 😁

@@ftloc As far as I can tell, Shiga is only in Comics Squad #2 although it looks like a nice anthology overall. Honestly, I've seen so many Shiga videos on YT I don't recall if I watched that one or not. While tracking down Jason Shiga's magazine and comic book anthology pieces I discovered Robert Leighton which I am now also collecting. Leighton was the editor for Games Magazine and did comics for them, but also worked with Chris Duffy on Nick Mag and Spongebob Squarepants Comics. Leighton did some interactive strips too including a nice parody of Choose Your Own Adventure.

Your channel is one of the best I'm following. You have not only a great taste in the comics and graphic novels, but also a very pleasant voice. I could listen to you for hours. Even my husband can recognize your voice. 😎 You're doing a really great job. For some of your next read I recommend these three: 1. Blast by Manu Larcenet Maybe his best work by now. The story and the art is just great! It's a masterpiece! But I must warn you, it's dark. 2. Shigurui by Takayuki Yamaguchi If you like samurai, you should read this one too. Set during the Tokugawa era of Japan, it's about corruption, manipulation and political games, and of course about two young samurai. 3. The Days That Disappear by Timothé Le Boucher This one you could interpret in a few ways. The art is little flat, but it's correct, and the story is great. And big thanks to your wife for she didn't kick you out for all these comics. 😉

Wow, what a bunch of books that was... I am jotting these down fervently for future acquisition, I have a few of the books in part 1, but here I am completely zeroed out, apart from Leviathan which brought a smile to my face as well when you brought it up. I have yet to read it but just as you I hold Shiga in the highest regard and have to get around to that one. You have convinced me, not only with the Near Mint Condition guest appearance but now here as well, that I really have to prioritize getting Always Never into my home sooner rather than later. I also very much appreciated the showcase of the Obscure Cities artwork, I know you've talked about those books in the past but I can't recall seeing much of the artwork. Knowing that you've gone through a very hard time in your life recently, something which I unfortunately can very much relate to, I feel really glad to see you back making videos and at least as far as I can tell, you are still enjoying yourself! As always, taking a well warranted (or not) break is nothing strange and probably only for the best as you will recover, regroup and often return with more energy and new ideas for what to do next. Here's to you, the top dog of KZfaq comics content, and to much, much better years to come, my friend.

Watership Down is a story that I missed when I was younger and have been meaning to get back to ever since. I finally sat down and created an actual list of what things to read and what order to read them in, so while it might be some time before I read it, you bringing it up here as thankfully reminded me to put it on my list. Thanks for that. I said last video that I would give two picks, one for each video, and while I thought One Piece was a cop-out answer since it's so popular, thankfully I don't think the same for my other pick. Clown Corps by Joe Choinard is a webcomic about the small town of Pinfall, and the detective agency of crime-fighting clowns that keep it safe. It's incredibly witty on every page, rich with stellar character designs, and with many things to say about its world, characters, and themes. It has been running since 2019, occasionally going on hiatus and coming back from hiatus in 2023 to absolutely blow me away with how much of a step up the current stuff is in both storytelling and art. And this is comic from a series that has been amazing from the start. It has a decent little cult following that leaves comments on each update, but I think it deserves more eyes on it and wanted to shout it out here.

I know Benoit Peeters because of his Herge biographies, didn’t know he also wrote comics. My comics taste mostly revolves around Franco Belgian Comics and Manga, while there is plenty of manga to chose from, Franco Belgian comics in English are a rare breed. Speaking of manga, i noticed Ayako by Tezuka in the background, did you read it? Tezuka’s works are very different from each other, My favourite is Dororo, which is an action story of the protagonist slaying demons to get his body parts back, Travelling through Edo period Japan. On another note, its been 4-5 years since the shelf tours, would love to know all the new stuff added to the collection!

I've recently acquired and read through the same Obscure Cities books you show of here (except for Shadow Of A Man) and I'm kind of mixed on them, because I love the artwork, and the stories and mysteries are quite compelling, but there are a few things that I'm not too fond of, mainly the depiction of female characters in the stories, I probably don't need to explain why since you've also read them, but that aspect of the stories honestly made me kind of uncomfortable at parts, which is a shame, because I do think pretty much everything else about them was great. I was also kind of disappointed by the ending of The Invisible Frontier, perhaps I might need to reread it a few times before I fully form my opinion on it, but I kind of just felt like the story fizzled out without much fanfare. I am still interested in checking out the other books in the series though, there's just something captivating about them, in spite of how I feel about some elements of the stories.

I completely know what you mean, and I have wondered if the discomfort I felt was engineered or inadvertent. I discovered recently Schuiten and Peeters with "The return of Captain Nemo" which I love. So, maybe I should discover more of their work. Plus, Benoit Peeters is very passionate about BDs/comics/mangas and his conferences at College de France are absolutely great. I read the novel "Watership down" a couple of years ago (as an adult) but found it very boring. I don't know what I missed exactly.
@ftloc

And now I have to look up all their other work, including Captain Nemo! There's something about the language and grammar of Watership Down that I find quite hypnotic, and would have felt the hardest thing to translate into other mediums. Maybe for you the comics version will do away with all the things you didn't enjoy about the prose! 😁

I will read more reviews about "Watership down" and try to understand what I missed. but before that, I will read "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame. in "The return of Captain Nemo" there are a lot of drawings in black and white which I love. this is not a book to read for the story but for the artwork.

I think a lot of people could say that about the Obscure Cities books as well, but I think the story is made up of the art and the writing, so the storytelling capabilities of art are incredible. [01-18-24] Hello and I wish happiness for you and yours throughout time!!! I am contacting you -{as my 1st and so far, only contact}, in interest of a book collection that I've had for many, many moons and wondering about value/collect ability/value at-large/ECT.-etc. and MORE; hoping you know and can/will help me: I adore these stories and in short-form or an old GARFIELD on college-exam studies VS the original, if you follow my drift, but these "Classic Illustrations" type comic books tell the entire story[ies] from the original books and brought to life, in a shorter form!? I believe there were originally about 60 of these comiicbooks as I was told from a person older than myself, that when pioneers, cowboys, teachers, and ppl trying to bring higher-class to THEN modern-day civilisation, the classics were re-written but in easy-to-carry paperbacks; which were less expensive for libraries to have on-shelf or anyone, anywhere could read and educate themselves: How true, I do NOT know but sounds reasonable; please fill in the gaps!? Oh, I have some very interesting ones: Le Miserables/To The Moon And Back/The Tale Of Two Cities and others; every one is MORE exciting than the one before!!! [And] All names we've heard before, no matter our age; these are classics: Not to mention the authors like a "Who's-Who"!!! If you have one, because they're in short-form, the back-cover will list all titles published!!! I do so hope/pray you find great curoisity in my letter HERE; too, these "Classics Illustrated" and you'll write back to me soon - sooner than later!? Best Regards, Charlotte Thomas Ph.#(478)318-7387 Ft. Valley, GA 31030 P.S.: I am now 64-yrs old, NO children, husband, nor relative to share these with, with appreciation; please suggest what - if any, value are these and I'll "take it with a grain of salt" if you reiterate of NO value; just be honest!!! Peace...be still. Amen
