Great review as usual! Really pulling out all the stops with regard to the lip debate! I have been on team "Lips" for a while now, because of other land tetrapods having them, the foramina count and placement, and the way the jaws articulated preventing the jaws from "closing fully", but hearing about all the studies done, and the further evidence for/against lips, was truly fascinating and explained really well. Thank you. In the midst of the debate about lips, I almost forgot about the figure itself 💀It is pretty good (shame about the tail seam though), but a bit too big for my preferred 1/35 scale, and I'm more than happy with 2020 Wilson and the 2017 Safari Tyrannosaurus. Even if they're slightly inaccurate/outdated, they're accurate enough, and just gorgeous models anyway. I'm also hoping EoFauna provides some more information on the Tyrannosaurus "imperator" (that didn't age too well lol) they teased a while back.

A truly impressive achievement, Rebor deserves the praise. My one criticism of the 'scientific rex at long last' accolade, is that it seems to look slightly 'angry' as per the JP trope. Thanks for your reviews, they are easily the best on KZfaq!

What a magnificent piece this is! I finally received mine and it has definitively dethroned Wilson as my favorite T-rex figure. The tail gap doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, although I'm happy to report that mine does fit pretty well. It's hard to imagine a better rex coming out any time soon, but I am excited to see what Eofauna comes up with when they turn their attention to the king.

Man have I been waiting for this! I was seriously considering getting Kiss because the quality and sculpt work looked legit. Rebor was clever to provide one with lips and one without as well. I don't think I'll be getting it anymore though, namely because of the uncloseable jaw, the tail seam, and most importantly, the fact that it's closer to 1:30 than 1:35 scale... This girl/boy's huge! Will have to sit back and wait again I suppose, either for an updated Wilson, or Eofauna's version(s). Thank you for the wonderful breakdown of the lips v no lips debate, I thought it was a great introduction, and after listening to the arguments I am inclined towards "yes lips" (like the komodo dragons etc) rather than no... Waiting in anticipation of your next review!

Thank you so much for the objective scientific insight on lips. Way too many people treat this question as if it were a religion, especially the pro-lip side. It's refreshing to hear an informed, balanced opinion that puts more emphasis on facts than personal bias.

A shame about the tail seam and issue with the jaw not fully closing, but regardless this is an impressive figure. Glad it isn't too much bigger then the Safari Ltd one as well. Now I'm just left wondering when BBTS is getting this one in. I pre-ordered the Kiss/lipped one (along with the diorama base 2 pack, and their broken horn Triceratops Trident). Love the coloration on it, and never really realized how similar it was to that one Blue Rhino Studios sculpture until now. Plus aside from the upcoming BotM figures, it's the only other option for a lipped T. rex currently. I have enough without lips in my collection, so this is a breath of fresh air. Also really appreciate the in depth look at the existing science on this controversial issue. I'm really glad Rebor took the time to make two different versions, to suit people's preferences. I wish more companies would have different options like this. If I could have afforded it, I would have ordered Tusk as well, and I like its homage to their original King T-Rex figure, which would also go nicely with their upcoming King Trident.

I guess I was just lucky. The tail on mine fits really good. Can barely see the seam. The jaws on mine close all the way as well, even from repeated opening and closing. If the color change on the tail bands bothers you then just dy brush with diluted black acrylic paint. It doesn't bother me. I think this model is really nice looking. Nice job Rebor!

I love it so much. A little bigger than I'd like, but still looks wonderful and I definitely prefer it to the PNSO models. Thanks a lot for the Wild Safari rex comparison!

Normally, i don't collect very many Tyrannosaurus figures. In all honesty, it's overabundance in po culture, while understandable and well deserved kind of made it stale for me. Atleast in hobbies and media. of course the actual animal is a very different story lol. But anyway, to the point. REBOR and i have had a rocky past, never would i have thought i'd be buying what is in my opinion one of the best Tyrannosaur figures from them lol.

So, I have received ‘Kiss’ and it is the finest representation of a Tyrannosaurid yet. I did heat up the tail, spread a little superglue around the connecting portions and shoved everything together until the glue took hold. The seam is still there but minor compared to anything else I’ve seen from others who bought this same figure. I don’t even notice it anymore. My only gripe would be the transition of striping color that is black from the head, downward until you get to the actual seam connection where the striping changes to tan. ?! Why? It’s too abrupt and more noticeable than the tail seam issue. I can correct that with some drybushing of flat black over the tan striping but, hello? did no one at quality control see this? That’s very minor. Beyond that gripe, this is the best T-Rex figure available on the market, for inexpensive figures, that you can find. The sculpt is excellent, the figure balances well and it looks fantastic. I will be pinning mine to a base left over from a Tamiya dinosaur kit and add a few pieces of era appropriate vegetation. Alongside, I’ll be doing the same for a Rebor Retrosaurus to show the evolution of dinosaur art from tail dragging dead ends to a clearly formidable animal that existed through time much longer than we yet have. Please, keep up the great reviews!

Thankyou for a very detailed video! I particularly love the citations which have been referenced. I have both the Rebo Kiss and PNSO Cameron. I heard about the Kiss mouth not closing fully once opened so I’ve left mine closed. I use the Cameron as a “mouth open” model although I’m tempted to get the Rebo Tusk too haha. The tail of my Kiss model seems to fit fairly neatly so perhaps Rebo resolved the issue with their later productions (mid 2023)?

It would have been my "budget Regina mundi" :D Not a Fan of the red, but the paintjob looks really well done. I really like the Feet in this Model. Gracile but heavy. Rebor finally made a Figure i am interested in. Awesome. After all this Drama. Thank you for the Video. It is always a pleasure. And fast.

this is an amazing figure that we waited for really long time i personally will not get it because i already have wilson and lips or lipless doesnt bother me really lately as much as i researched this i have seen many good points about both the lips and lipless case and since there is no final conclusion yet im alright with wilson and even if there was a final conclusion such small thing is not enough for me to pay that much money and space for this amazing model, not to mention that i prefer the 1:35 both for collecting reasons and space reasons and since in general shape both wilson and rebor show a very well updated trex with the bulky appearance i will sit with good old wilson here but yea this model really blew up in the figure collecting community and reasonably so, both kiss and tusk are amazing and top favourite trex figures (edit) i also want to add some extra arguments against the lips not mentioned in the video 1. with foramina count its indeed true that trex reaches 80 and doesnt even reach the lowest crocodilian foramina number 100 *but* the foramina are closer to that of the lowest crocodile number than any lipped animals, and maybe it might not even have to do even with that, river dolphins vary in extra oral tissue its either lips or they are tight like in crocodiles (like ganges river dolphin) and resulting with exposed teeth but all of them have smooth skulls even the ones with exposed teeth so in the end it might depend completely on the benefits when it comes to the life of the animals 2. in the part where you say animals dont shut the mouths tight because it would wear the teeth down, its true only because the animals used for comparison (like us humans) have teeth that come in contact with each other when our mouths are closed, theropod teeth though dont come in contact at all when the mouth is closed so the teeth cannot wear down by grinding on top of each other and here is an ironic thought: there are geckos with eyelids and geckos without eyelids...eyelids are important also for keeping the eyes moist but the species that lack eyelids lick their eyes so even without eyelids they found a solution to that problem, imagine if all gecko species that lack eyelids were extinct and we only had geckos with eyelids today, we would easily assume that the extinct ones would have eyelids true and be completely off from reality...who knows maybe dinosaurs on top of their teeth alone being strong enough to last without lips *(the one you mentioned in the video with the crocodiles staying dormant for months in dry ground and not coming in contact at all yet their teeth still being fine and well)* might have taken baths in water, lots of dinosaur species lived in environments with a lot of water like tyrannosaurus rex i myself as i said accept both views and i just want people to think like this too and not get mad over useless stuff and support 1 thing to death, we are talking about long extinct animals there are always mysteries about them, dont get mad over another opinion because this has even experts arguing, if the answer was as simple as 100% lips or 100% lipless, this debate chaos would never exist in the first place and especially not live until this day but it still exists and its not solved

As much as the model is sweet, that tail gap is just inexcusable and an eye sore that I won't pay the $50-60 price tag and shipping for, I may as well use that money and get the BoTM 1:35 T.rex. I'll probably pass both Kiss and Tusk but instead, wait for King Trident and the Deinosuchus as well.

Wry unfortunate that they didn’t get that right. I know they can since the stegosaurus is well done. Also, I agree with you about the back Of the head/neck. It does look odd to me, too.

One of my favorite T. Rex figures ever, but does anyone know if the Blue Rhino studios version is available as a figure? That is just perfect for me. Rebor's and BOTM's are close tho.

A really nice figure but the tail join is disappointing. I have their older Killer Queen with same design but the tail joins much neater than this. What a great review!

I love this model - the lip seal on mine was perfect and the seam between the tail and the body isn't very noticable, so I got pretty lucky! My support stand was really loose though - the bar didn't fit tightly into the other parts at all, is that a common issue or am I missing something?

brilliant job explain explaining the science behind the lips issue...just reviewing the figure is easy but the science is main selling point in your reviews...i personally prefer no lips ..and the evidence behind the no lips in case of tyrannosaurs seems more convincing to me personally ..although i have no issue if the evidence supporting lips become more strong in the future studies...one point i want to mention about the teeth grinding issue when the jaws are closed tightly is that we experience teeth grinding because the upper jaw and lower jaw sits on each other in comparison tyrannosaurs didn't have to face this issue as the lower jaw sits completely under the upper jaw with soft tissue opening in the upper jaws....also between the PNSO and the REBOR i personally prefers the hind limb of PNSO ..the claws have more soft tissue padding and looks more natural....both figures are awesome though.

I recently got one for Christmas, it was listed as having an articulated jaw, however it's mouth will not open

I cut an inch off of the plug and glued the tail on tightly with super glue. You don't see the seam until you get close and really look for it.

I love this model! It is a shame about the tail seam though.. I hope it is fixable though like one commentor said about shaving off the insert a little bit... and maybe gluing it too. I do agree that the neck muscles behind the head are a bit too big. The mouth also not closing all the way is a shame too. Though at least the lips are still able to be shown regardless. Makes the animal look like it's relaxing it's mouth a bit or something. I do love the subtle detail of the gastralia leaving a bump under the belly though! Really cool! I may get this model after Christmas! I think what makes the tail seam even worse is that there's little to no hint of it in the promo pictures too!

Well done for being objective overall. Only "mistake" I see is that you forgot aligators whos teeth are straight like dinosaurus and that in lipless paper sientist working know that crocodiles have caratin there, he was just trying to discribe scales best he can and shape of crocodile ceratin was closest. Other than that you covered most of debate in objective way.

Amazing video I learned a lot, I ordered this t rex as my first piece for collecting i don't regreat it. In regards of the tail Gap I saw a youtuber cuting a bit of the internal part of an alien-dino and it fitted better in that case, probably would work the same with this one.

Yes! I really like this figure! Cant wait to get mine. My fav Rebor figure so far! I also really really dig the color scheme. Looks menacing yet natural too. Only issue I have with it is indeed the tail part 🤔

My copy's tail seem line is extremely small, but the mouth bothered me a bit as it closed 99% of the way and didn't open very far. Overall, I didn't enjoy moving the mouth at all because it would also take a rather long time to close the mouth on mine due to it springing back to its precious position. So I glued the mouth shut, and I live it so much more. It is my favourite dinosaur figure as you can tell by my profile picture and it is a must have.

Gotta mention though, birds also do have lips. You can see it in vultures where the areas of jaw not covered by beak close shut "skin to skin" when the mouth is closed. If they were lipless to the extent dinosaurs would need to be in order to have teeth hanging out, we would see a hole to the other side of the head when the birds mouth was closed. Additionally, enamel desiccating is not the primary concern, but more general enamel wear. This happens with lipless animals even underwater; the teeth wear down and become smooth and round. This is fine for puncturing crocodiles or stabbing tusks, but serrated blade shaped teeth are far more fragile and the serrations would wear away quickly.

At least it with the lip version when it opens its mouth you see its teeth because unlike with most Tyrannosaurs artwork when it opens its mouth you don’t barely see its teeth but I like you can see the teeth with this model when it opens its mouth of course.

I'll wait for the PNSO Version of this one... Love your review though ...

This debate is really quite heated, and I am guessing that the latest study where scientists were able to identify a genetic mutation that triggers the growth of teeth in chicken embryos will make it even more interesting 😊

I really like the sculpting so close to Blue Rhinos fleshy SUE. But (yes I am a nagger) ...WHY!!! That extra tail with horrible seamline? And why is the body red with black stipes and the tail suddenly red with grey 27:32 (pause) ??? I am picky but it looks a bit like the tail from another paint version (or is it the cam?) And if they made it 1/35 scale standard perhaps it would have been a little smaller but made-in-one piece beautiful sculpt. It´s like: Oh PNSO makes horrible seamlines sometimes... hold my beer - We are REBOR we can do that much better!!! Great review again - very informative , scientific and neutral. PS: and what about the ancient land living crocs and their lips/no lips? Kaprosuchus and his homies. PPS: It´s really like every good company has a strategy for nerver making a overal (perfect) great model... so that you allways want to buy the upgrade. Too big scales...next time smaller ones... seamline...next time no seamline...no seamlines perfect skin, but broken joints ... and so on

I don't know about others, but I love these long and well-detailed reviews. ❤ As I always say, these videos help me a lot to learn new things and I will never say no to a long video like this. And about Rebor, man I love this company. They are without a doubt one of the best figure producers out there and I think Rebor teeth are the best teeth I've seen in figures. I have only one Rebor figure (Rebor GrabNGo Komodo Dragon / Megalania) and I can imagine the quality of these Rexes. Most of the time I try to have scientifically accurate toys/figures. With today's technology, we can predict most things correctly and I'm sure most of these toys/figures are quite accurate. And with this in-depth analysis If anyone has any doubt about lips or no lips, I'm sure you can come to a better conclusion. This review went so much further with the inclusion of both sides of the fence journeymen research papers and presentations of ideas as to the pros and cons. Loved it! The lipless look has a certain appeal that, to me, isn’t just aesthetic. But I did order one of each ‘Kiss’ and ‘Tusk’. I don’t normally do that-if I have an opinion about something I follow it. But, because this is one of those areas that has no conclusive answer, I felt it best to spend the extra money. They’ll still look great together. As for the tail issue, I’ll heat both the main body and tail with a heat gun before assembly. If there’s an issue, super glue and a couple of clamps should fix things. It's a gorgeous figure, but man that tail seam... I'm wondering if heating up the area where the tail is inserted will help you push it in a bit further. It's a trick that many action figure collectors like myself use when a joint feels like it's stuck. Heating up the plastic for maybe 20 seconds or so with hot water or a hair dryer will temporarily make it more malleable.

Oh, there's no doubt in my mind - speaking as a paleontologist - that 48' would be easily within the range of intraspecific variability for T. rex - the longest known individuals hover around the 12.5 to 13 meter mark or about 42' - even looking at our OWN species, where the average man is 5'9" in the west and 5'7" if you average all men across all nations and ethnicities globally, you get SIGNIFICANTLY larger individuals. Even for myself, I'm "only" 6'2" but consider this: at 6'2", compared to the average 5'9" western man, I am 5 inches taller than average or nearly half a FOOT taller than average - or about 7.5% taller than the average man and 10.5% taller than the GLOBAL male average. If you applied that to T. rex, an individual coming in at 7.5% LONGER than the KNOWN adult specimens would be over 45' long and if 10% longer would be over 46' long. Now, take into account individuals like 7'2" Shaq - he is 17 inches taller than the 5'9" average western male or 24.6% taller - which if you apply it to T. rex would go from around a 40' average for adults to just under 50 feet long. That's not even accounting for even larger individuals like the nearly 9 foot tall Robert Pershing Wadlow. It's NOT something that only manifests in humans, either - the average African elephant male is 10 feet at the shoulder and weighs in at around 5 tons .But there have been exceptions - one freakish male was 13 feet at the shoulder and weighed in at around 10 tons - TWICE the typical mass. The average blue whale is 90 feet long as an adult and reaches an adult weight of between 100 and 140 tons - but the largest RECORDED individual was 110 feet long and weighed in at a staggering 230 tons - about twice the size of the average. There have been massive cattle, gigantic dogs and freakish rabbits and of course, Gustav the enormous 25+ foot Nile crocodile. My point is, the fossil record only records the individuals lucky enough to have been preserved in the right way at the right time and does NOT preserve the vast majority of individuals. It stands to reason that, as with any species, there WOULD be gigantism present in T. rex - individuals FAR exceeding even Scotty or Sue - and so I think a 48 foot Tyrannosaur is EASILY within that range. If I had to guess, the maximum LIKELY for a freak of nature, once-in-a-century T. rex with gigantism would be somewhere in the range of 50 to 57 feet long and 6 meters at the hips, or just under 20 feet (compare that to Scotty or Sue, who are 4 to 4.5 meters or around 13-14 feet at the hips. This MEGA rex would easily be able to scrape the bottom of a 25 foot high underpass with its head and would be about as long as one of the big 18-wheel transport trucks you see on the road. It would weigh probably around 15 tons (as opposed to Scotty's mass of just under 10 tons). I'd say that's ENTIRELY reasonable given the range of sizes present in EVERY species - gigantism is real and it happens on rare occasions and when it does, you are usually looking at an individual not just a LITTLE larger than average but a LOT larger than average. A 50 foot rex is therefore entirely conceivable (in fact, Mark Witton was just recently musing on the maximum attainable size for a T. rex and whether there wasn't at some point a massive individual far surpassing all others). I just find it interesting to note that there's a HUGELY conservative view that dominates when it comes to estimating maximum theropod sizes when a brief survey of any given 10 or 20 modern species WILL reveal gigantism at work on rare occasions and the individuals are often HUGE compared to the others (and to clarify, no, Scotty and Sue do not represent any form of gigantism within T. rex - they simply represent very mature individuals who have attained their full NATURAL size and were lucky enough to be fossilized for us to find). A list of gigantic specimens by species with the species average: 1. Shire horse: Average: 68 inches at the shoulder Largest individual recorded: Sampson, 86 inches at the shoulder Size disparity: 26.5% larger 2. Human being (homo sapiens): Average male: 67" globally (5'7") Tallest recorded: Robert Pershing Wadlow - 8'11" (107 inches) Size disparity: 60% 3. African lion: Average male: 400 lbs Largest recorded male: 690 lbs Size disparity: 72.5% 4. African elephant Average bull weight: 5 tons (10,000 lbs), 10' at the shoulder Largest recorded bull: 12 tons (24,000 lbs), 13' at the shoulder Size disparity: 140% (weight) and 30% (height) 5. Moose (Elk) Average bull: 72" (6 feet) at the shoulder and up to 1,400 lbs Largest bull recorded: 7.6 feet at the shoulder and 1,808 lbs size disparity: 26.7% (height) and 29% (weight). I could go on - the point is made already, though, and that is that the size disparity between the average adult size and the largest recorded size among living animals is very frequently substantial - at least 25% for height/length and up to 140% for mass. GOING by that, I'd posit a 25% to 30% larger maximum length vs the large adult lengths we are familiar with - which takes us to a maximum achievable length of 52.5 to just under 55 feet long if we take 42 feet (13 meters) as representing the typical maximum size for an old adult. For height, that would take us to around 16.5 feet at the hips to about 18 to 19' if we assume a maximum normal height of 13.5 to 14' or so - which brings the height at the top of the high point of the nec, posture depending, at around 20 to 22' if we presume a 30% size disparity between the true max and what we see in the fossil record. And in terms of mass, that variability is a lot higher simply because mass increases very rapidly with increased dimensions - much faster than height or length does - as you can see from the African Elephant example, there 140% increase in mass for a 30% increase in height or over 4 to 1, while the moose, owing to its more gangly build, doesnt increase nearly as much in mass. Given the build of T. rex, it's safe to presume the mass would at least stay in line with the length or height disparity and in fact eclipse it by a fair margin - so a 50% heavier over a 10 ton max bringing it to 15 tons is right in the range I posit above. There you have it. I posit a maximum POSSIBLE size for T. rex of around 55 feet long, 18 to 19 feet at the hips and a mass of no less than 15 tons. Bear in mind, we're talking about an absolute monster - a freak - the T. rex equivalent to Yao Ming or even Robert Pershing Wadlow compared to the average man. This would be a one-in-a-million T. rex - the kind of animal ALL other tyrannosaurs in the area would make way for and never dare challenge - the kind of animal you'd only see every several generations or more - maybe several centuries. Somewhere, at some point, a T. rex that big - I can almost guarantee - did exist - and no, if you're wondering, it does not violate the square-cubed law for that to happen. It's just on the extreme end of attainable biped masses, most likely.

Amazing video absolutely loved my figure should be coming tomorrow but I believe dinosaurs were lipped because exposed teeth for me makes them look dumb but the lips makes them look wiser and intelligent but it is what it is.

Rebor wins the first time against PNSO. That's not to say Wilson was BAD when it came out, but clearly we can see every improvement Kiss has over him. Also, I like lips because it looks more natural. You can tell if something is *natural* just by looking at it, without profound knowledge of paleontology or anatomy. It's an instinct. "Lipless" is still possible, but all those lipless models just hadn't done it right. Maybe someday PNSO can make a really natural-looking lipless theropod model and that's when I change my mind.
