Johnny's Reloading Bench considering that the adjustable barrel tuners, like that Harrell muzzle break/tuner can have a drastic effect on group size with just moving 1-2oz of weight a small distance forward or backward on the barrel, I wouldn't be surprised that just the brake/suppressor adapter would make a drastic difference in group size. Was a great test though for sure. I've already ordered one of the Lyman funnel sets to try them out. Way cheaper option than the Sinclair units I was going to stock up on lol..

I made it through the first 100 rounds today. Creedmoor is not exactly a big recoiling round, but 50 rounds with no suppressor or brake starts to wear on you! I'm hoping to start testing the actual muzzle devices tomorrow.

350 Creedmoor + 50 Grendel + 50 .223 Rem = HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS of trickling powder charges. Every single one of them is weighed down to the single granule of powder. It was exhausting! I wanted the best ammo I could make for this testing, though...so hopefully it will pay off.

Awesome, a double feature! Can’t wait to watch the Grendel video next. Did I see a box of .257 Roberts dies in that stack of dies? I would love to see a series on the .257 Roberts. I think it overdue for a resurgence. A great cartridge that is good for deer and varmints with light recoil.

Yup, I have an old sporterized Arisaka chambered in .257 Roberts. One of the pieces in the bolt is cracked and I haven't been able to shoot it in a while. I need to see if I can track down a replacement part. Is anyone making guns chambered in .257 Roberts right now? I wouldn't mind picking one up. I killed a couple deer with the Arisaka when I was a kid so I'm a fan of the cartridge.

Building a 10.5 inch ar pistol for alternate season. Your butt kicking series is helping me a a ton! General reloading question: can I reload without a chronograph if I'm staying under published max charges? I wouldn't start at the max charge or course work my way up looking for presure signs. Any other tips to reloading without a chrono?
@uraniumpenetrator3844
@uraniumpenetrator3844 4 жыл бұрын
Read your brass for pressure signs and you'll be OK. A chronograph is a tool for checking the consistency of cartridges, round to round. Good stuff to know, but not essential to reloading. The industry loves to sell us stuff we don't absolutely need. You're definitely on the right track. Start at the minimum powder charge and never exceed the maximum, tenth of a grain at a time. Start over when you change a component. There's my nickels worth.

I think you should draw your intersecting lines for your point of aim, and then put your orange dots 3moa down and 2moa right, and almost every video you will have several shots hit them. That way it's not a wasted dot! 😜
@JohnnysReloadingBench
@JohnnysReloadingBench 6 жыл бұрын
lol great idea. I know you're joking, but I usually zero my gun off the dot so I can keep a consistent aiming point with a fresh dot. It's not a big deal with 22 caliber, but with 30 cal a 5 shot group can tear up a dot pretty well. It's also much easier for you all to see the bullet holes on video when they're on the white paper.

This is a truly strange realization. In shooting custom 75 gr everglades FMJ HP. I have a 24 in barrel with a 1-7 twist. I have tested R-15, TAC, VHT N140, N540. My best groups all have been with 24.0-24.2 gr. I was very surprised to discover this. Watching this and other videos show very similar results even with varying barrel lengths. Just throwing this out there.

a lot of fire from the muzzle = wasted energy/powder. i understand that picking most accurate powder that can push bullet with highest velocity is in most cases will result in lots of un-burned powder granules on exit. removing suppressor just made it so much more obvious. it literally hurts to see expensive powder literally going to waste burning outside the barrel and not pushing the bullet. I wonder if there are powders that can burn almost completely by the time bullet reaches the muzzle. i should say that i know that there are powders like that. perhaps ones catered to SBRs and pistols, but i mean what are those powders and how do they perform. I think, Johnny, this could be potentially an interesting topic to dive into and explore.

I've got an off the shelf 10.5 inch barrel that has gained about 4moa of precision loss over the last 500 rounds. Total rounds through the barrel is about 1200. The bcg scope and shooter have all been eliminated from the equation as my son is shooting a second barrel from the same lot and we have swapped all other components during testing over the last few days. Both guns are exact twins. His barrel is about 2moa mine is 4-6 moa. We both clean our barrels with bronze brush and frog lube with patch wipe-down after each outing. Our rounds have mostly been 50gr zmax using AA5744 at 2600fps we always split the same batch of loads. Really perplexing situation. I never imagined such a quick drop in precision. My groups are nice and round and evenly spaced yet very spread out. Any thoughts? I'm totally shocked.

I was watching iragveteran888 on one of his videos. When you are doing your testing and having a stray bullet jump, could that be a cause of a bullet being a little lighter than the others. So if you weighed each bullet from heaviest to lightest and used the ones that were closest in weight, wicks would that give you a better grouping. Keep up the awesome job!

Theory on relatively poor accuracy without muzzle device: The crown of the muzzle on my 10.5" 5.56 pistol is completely flat. Not conduscive to any sort of accuracy. Maybe check your muzzle crown?
@drobbyb
@drobbyb 6 жыл бұрын
I think there's something to this. These barrels are meant to have some sort of muzzle device attached to them. Whereas say a bolt action hunting rifle for example traditionally does not (and therefore is crowned accordingly).
@thejohnnybob

SoCarRob That was exactly my thought process.

The crown is the crown. If it was messed up, the problem would be seen with or without the suppressor. Keep in mind this is a 30 caliber suppressor, so there's a ton of clearance. Plus, this same loss of accuracy is seen on pretty much every gun I own. The next video should clarify things.
