Thanks David... after endless stories of the great orange one, brexit shenanigans, climate catastrophe, and the pandemic wrecking civilization, it’s so nice to be able to lose oneself in the bucolic scenery and relaxing lifestyle your vlog depicts so wonderfully. Please keep it up good sir, the world needs more of this right now.

First of all, another nice, gentle vlog. These are very much needed - esp here in smoke filled Sacramento, California. Second, there are nice, light folding trollies (hand trucks here in US). I use mine for my music gear. Third, I propose David Johns for knighthood. You are giving the world one of the best insights into England and the English soul.

Hi David, I am from Austria and I found your channel while searching for videos about boat holidays (we have already done this in France and the Netherlands). In the last 2 months I have watched ALL of your vlogs, almost every TV evening started with "hello and welcome to the vlog" :-) David, thank you so much for your videos (also for the fun stuff, your "bread baking" is really outstanding, I watched it already several times) and also thank you for the work that goes with them, please keep going like this!!!! Alrewas or in the anglo saxon days, alre an alder tree and waese a wash area. fen, flood plain, marsh etc. before the land was drained the over flow from local rivers would create such a wet land. So the village I suppose, may now have the modern English name of Aldermarsh.

I do relish the appearances of these videos. At 5:09 we passed a narrowboat that read "Sam" 'Sawley Mist'. It almost brought a tear to my eye. A loved one, no longer with us I thought. A Google search (other search engines are available) quickly made me chuckle. A very enjoyable end to a busy day. Thanks David.

3:38 Concur. You can never have enough relaxing at home with a cuppa and a nice cheese sandwich. 5:55 "When In Doubt, Mumble" is the title of a 1972 book by American humorist James Boren (1925-2010), written on the subject of "the vacuumental thinking and idiotoxicities of Washington". It's an amusing read. Recommended for a rainy day on board, if you can find a copy. Splendidly relaxing video as always, safe journeys!

An easy day on the canal! According to the ever-reliable Wikkipedia, Alrewas is pronounced "awl-ree-was" and the name derives from the Old English 'Alor-wæsse', meaning "alluvial land growing with alder trees". These toponyms (apparently!) always bother me - can you imagine someone actually bothering to call a place 'alluvial land growing with alder trees'?!

Cruising the Cut I have a great idea for a new KZfaq channel. As YT increasingly gives the impression that the majority of Brits now live on narrowboats, how about a channel entitled 'Living in a house: How I moved from the canals onto dry land'. Subjects covered would include 'How to put out the dustbins', 'Annual costs of owning a house', 'Going shopping by car', 'How to use a plumbed-in toilet', 'Cooking in a house', 'Basic maintenance of a house' 'Gardening - some ideas'. I am sure that it would be very popular, as stressed narrowboaters need some escapist viewing after trudging through mud to the shops, emptying their toilet cassette, struggling to open a load of heavy locks every day etc...

You need to go to a Auto. shop store and buy one of those electronic car horns with chose of fanfares to play at a touch of a button. That why you can play yourself through the locks. Barton Marina, they have a range of shops, places you can buy fresh food and several eateries including a pub. I have just finished watching and I genuinely haven't any read comments but you asked a question about gouges in brickwork. I think they are/were for planks to drop in and isolate the section of the canal for repairs etc. Do I get a virtual cheese sandwich if I am right. To anyone who got whatever the answer is correct earlier then well done.

We were travelling along here a few weeks ago, but we were taking our time. We spent a night at Fradley, and discovered that the water point there is probably the slowest in the country.. We then stopped just before Alrewas, and stayed a couple of nights because it became very windy (we were 2 boats away from the top lock landing, and had great fun watching the mainly inexperienced boaters negotiating the lock).

Luckily most marinas don't tend to have lots of kids running around, the boats tend to attract an older audience (ie grandparents rather than young parents, I'd say)

Alrewas; from the Anglo-Saxon alr-wasta, meaning the Alder(wood) waste(land), in reference to the area's ancient aspect. Place-name etymology is a great way to understand the natural and economic history of the land in which we live. Brill channel, BTW.

Great stuff David. I think you'll find that the September heat wave was ours. We specifically booked it along with our narrow boat holiday. Alas we are confined 12000 miles away, not allowed to leave the country and I'm guessing some other lucky folks took our boat. I hope they had a great time.

A fanfare for locks opening ... this seems like a splendid opportunity for a custom horn replacement. something with a little mp3 proclaiming your entrance into the lower canal !!

@@CruisingTheCut Oh yes.And there is a marina/workshop that be clearly seen too.At times I envy you floating along at 4mph when I am chasing a schedule at 50+ mph..Mind you on a rainy day I prefer the warmth of my cab..

I’ve never heard of that village. Well, perhaps I have and merely thought someone was clearing their throat. Thanks for posting, lovely and scenic as always.
