It's truly not necessary to clean 22LR bores as often as people think.

Thanks for your video! I just bought my first .22 carabine (I'm 60) Used to blackpowder where we clean everything like maniacs, I didn't know how to take care of my .22. You are great help and save us time and hassle. If we ever meet, beer is on me. I suscribe, keep at it! All the best.

Man you hit the nail rite on the head with this video ..I tested my model 60 Winchester 23 inch barrel 22 lr rifle with cleaning the barrel totally clean to bare metal and then shot multiple groups and the groups were shit .. with cci 45 grain hollow points suppressor 970 fps rounds As I shot more and more rounds groups kept shrinking and shrinking until it finally settled down after around a hundred rounds through it ..The groups from 50 yards starting out we're around 3 inch groups from cleaned barrel to 2 bare metal and they shrunk to around 2 inch groups 50 yards with around 50 rounds and they kept shrinking until it hit around 1 inch groups at a hundred rounds .after around 200 rounds they shrunk even a little more around 3/4 inch groups at 50 yards and I have put around a thousand rounds threw this rifle and it shoots the most accurately it has ever shot since I've owned the this rifle so ya you are exactly correct don't clean your 22 lr rifle barrel this man is 100 percent on target ..I would of never tried this unless I seen your video so who ever says that a cleaner barrel is better is completely wrong ..it really makes perfect sense it would shoot better with a fouled barrel especially on a older rimfire like I have ..the lead and lubricant from the bullet fills in any pitting ..tool marks ..or any imperfections that the barrel may have which yheirfore your rifle will shoot more accurate this is a fact so again don't clean your rimfire barrel ...thanks for the video and you definitely have some of the best knowledge out their keep these videos coming this man knows his shit I promise he does

I shot four position compaction from the mid 70's thru the mid 80's. I had a winchester model 52d, which I got in 1970. And never clean the bore. I shot on average 300 rounds on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday every week. My instructor was Bill Robenstine, he had two sons, one was using his rifle that he used in the olympics, and he never clean his.

Wow, this is a new one on me, now I have to rethink some things. I just sold a Bergara B14R recently and noticed after a good cleaning it seemed to take a lot of rounds to get back to good groups. I used Break Free CLR when I first bought it and switched to Bore Tech Rimfire Blend later, it really stripped all the lead build up out and the group sizes got larger afterward and took longer each time to get back to acceptable groups. I have a friend who shoots an Anshutz 1710 and he was told by the tech at Anshutz to only clean moving parts, now I think I know what he meant. I have a new RimX ordered, this is going to be a hard habit to break. Do you use a bore scope to check your barrels? You really gave me something to consider. Great videos. I just found your channel today. Thanks.

Due to the cost of ammo and being a Smith and having little time, I have been playing with the .22s alot lately. It's kind of a new found hobby for me that seems to be getting out of control. In the past few mos. I have unfortunately found a few (3) youth rifle clubs that have sold off their rifles at cheap prices and I find that to be a sad situation and at my range we are down to just a few kids shooting now due to the recent school shootings. I purchased a Kimber 82G and 2. Walther KK UIT Spezial Match and a Anschutz 54 for around 1/2 price. I also bought a B-14R and rebarreled it with a Bartlein 24" heavy palma barrel. I think you are correct on the barrel cleaning. When I buy a new to me rifle i strip out all the carbon and lead to see what i'm dealing with and build back. I was told by an oldtimer that to refoul a barrel it takes at least 1. shell per inch of barrel length before it starts to shoot at all and that testing in the military proved with the .22 rifles they were using with iron peep sights even after 100s of thousands of rounds fired they found no significant loss in accuracy without cleaning. I would agree that the barrel rifling would dictate when it needs to be cleaned. My Kimber 82G has shallow rifling where as the Walthers and Anschutz rifles have a heavy deeper rifling and my Bartlein cut rifled barrel is really starting to shoot now that it's broke in and after quite a few rounds fired without cleaning. I also tell my customers that in F-Class rifles I build them to quit cleaning them so much after a certain barrel round count. I've seen people stupidly clean a rifle before an F-Class shoot and their first relay was a terrible score for them to which I reply "you shot like someone who just cleaned their rifle" usually they say "I did" well there you have it clean it from now on when accuracy or X count falls off. Good info and thanks for the video I appreciate your hard work. I especially liked the ruining the barrel with a bronze brush video it was a hoot.

Interesting insight and comments. All of your rifles are bolt action. I would be interested in hearing about how you would treat the semi-autos. I just got a 10/22 with a 0.92" target fluted bull barrel. Pretty darn accurate. However, it was filthy out of the box so I cleaned everything thoroughly. I remove the trigger group and the bolt after every 200 rounds and keep those clean and the inside of the receiver cleaned as well because I want to ensure the bolt cycles properly. BTW I used 3in1 dry lubricant on these parts, not oil or even CLP because it keeps the residue and carbon from building up.

If you do a large amount of testing of different brands with a rifle, do you clean after you find the ammo the rifle likes? At 73, I’m getting back into small bore shooting and loving it. I have cured my flinching. Thanks for the great info.

Been watching a bunch of your videos and they been a tremendous help. I have a cz 457 and was wondering what your chamber cleaning process? If i dont clean the chamber after 500 or so rounds the bolt becomes difficult to close. Ive been using a brush to scrub the chamber after every outing and running the crud out with 2 or so dry patches.

I think you provide sound advice. I would add one caveat, if you have a semi-auto .22 you should clean the bolt area at least every 400 rounds because the fouling will cause various malfunctions. Additionally if you get the barrel hot with rapid fire it is easy to have molten lead build up in the bore. I have seen this occur in my own 10-22 with a bore scope inspection. Aside from that my 10-22 barrel will be surprisingly clean after 4-500 rounds of slow fire despite how fouled the bolt gets.

Cool Cool... Good Info. I've recently inherited a 552 Remington Speedmaster (year 1987 from what I can gather) and shoot around 30 or so CCI 22LR varmint and target rounds a day. Is cleaning the bolt and trigger group frequently (once a week) necessary? I just want it to keep shooting straight and I sure as hell don't want to ruin it cause it was one of grandfather's rifles. Thanks in advance.

I found that I have to clean just the chamber of my kidd's barrels and my savage when they won't extract a live round due to the wax and carbon ring at the end of the chamber. Other that that I usually don't clean until accuracy falls off. I'm not using match ammo. But only sub-sonic loads from cci, eley, rws, and that dirty remington sub's. All rifles are suppressed. No hi-speed stuff ever.

No world records to my name, however, if you look back at my previous videos posted on youtube recently where I'm shooting the TS Customs RimX rifle, you'll see some impressive performance with thousands of rounds on the barrel since cleaning. Impressive, even when comparing to benchrest level results, despite that I'm shooting from prone position with bipod and rear bag.

I only clean chamber due to carbon ring that builsds up after about 300-400 rounds. Ive tried a higher round count and i get flyers that open my groups up to .5s. After cleaning chamber im back to .2s and .3s. Im shooting a cz457 with a Lilja match barrel 3 groove with a eley eps match chamber. What in your own opinion would cause this?
@primalrights
@primalrights 3 жыл бұрын
Different barrels will certainly react differently due to the large variances in lead angle, chamber dimension, land/groove configuration, bore diameter, and many other variables. Ammo can also play a very large role. This is what leads to the equipment choices and selection seen in my rimfires. Large actions, with large diameter tenons, so as to avoid potential sources of failure when pursuing the upper tier of rimfire precision and accuracy.

Lots of varying opinions on this subject in forums and whatnot. Many are of the same mind. Did I understand you to say that you DO clean the bore between brands when testing different ammo? If so, I'm assuming that's more to clear the different kinds of lubricant? How many rounds do you consider it taking before a new barrel has "Settled in"? I read on the Lapua test center website they prefer a barrel to have 500 - 1000 rounds through it before sending it to them for lot testing. One more question... When ammo testing and after cleaning, how many rounds does it take to properly fowl the barrel before you start seriously judging accuracy? Thanks so much! Very nice collection you got there...
@primalrights
@primalrights 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the nature of the test, but in certain instances, yes I will clean the bore between ammo types. However, usually no more than 20 rounds is required to get new ammo type to settle in. On brand new barrels, it may take as many as 1000 or 1500 rounds fired before it settles in. Depends entirely on the bore and chamber configuration.

Some of the rifles in this video are fired only a couple times a year, for the last 15 years... and still I do not clean the bore. The take away should be regarding 22lr and the fact the bore doesn't need the kind of maintenance a centerfire does. As mentioned in the video, I still advocate maintenance of the action, muzzle, and exterior.
