There are m.artists that have better technique than others. There also ones who can teach better than fight, compete etc. Having a wife chinese does not mean you have better knowledge than others. Being chinese does not mean you know more than non-chinese. The lesson here is to take what you like and leave what you do not. Live life the way that makes you happy. Use this as a guide to being a healthier person. Do not judge someone who is trying to help others. Peace and tranquility.... And by the way, I just came across this video this morning.

I’ve had years of experience training hard martial arts, weapon retention and control, and military calisthenics drills. Going through this sequence is like giving myself a hug after years of hard living. It released something in me and I teared up a little. I think I’ll keep this as a practice session for days off since it’s been my first training in a long time meant to take care of me instead of hurt someone else. As I get older with a disease that is slowing me down, I’ve sometimes wondered what is an acceptable minimum for my ability to move and defend myself. I think this will do nicely. As I get better, I’ll add it into my walks.

Mr. Mace I have been watching your tutorials for some time. I have read the numerous negative comments regarding your skills and I admire your perseverance and class with which you handle it. You obviously love what you do and I commend you for that. Many so called masters have much to improve on as well. Having spent the last twenty or so years learning both Yang and Chen family systems it is apparent however that some of these criticisms are accurate with regard not only to technique but of Chi flow as well. I know you are aware of this unless you are deluded somehow but I don't believe this to be the case. I understand the business side so I get that one can admit to not knowing everything but probably not a good business decision. Anyone who teaches understands that 99% of those who wish to learn Tai Ji Quan will never move past the beginning level. And the sad reality is that most teachers are fitness oriented at best. The one aspect I feel many of the haters fail to realize is that learning and teaching are the same thing. We teach others to reveal our own weakness. Students who continue to learn find our teachers are not so perfect once the martial romance wears off. Keep doing what you love and teach others. Keep advancing and never become the "master". You and I as well as all the other players out there have much more to learn.

hi, my name is marty. feb 15 2011 I fell off a 60FT cliff and destroyed my entire body. I shattered everything from my collar bone down, and sat in a body cast for 6MONTHS. they said i'd never walk again, but i learned on my own after a long time of rolling around in that chair. recently i started going downhill really bad, but i found a new doctor who is trying to help. I've been following these videos for a couple of years as i do my rehab. I used to be a very skillful martial artist and had been studying kung fu since i was a kid, and Brazilian jiu jitsu as a teen and young adult. i started following you and have watched this video in particular many times to teach myself how to move again, and re-learn my tai-chi. It helps a lot to get up and move the body in many directions and learn to focus on my movements. Just wanted to say thanks, and keep up the good work. I would like to see new tai-chi videos as I progress, so i'm hoping maybe you can post more forms soon to follow. If anyone reading this has gone through anything as bad as i have. it really works to study and practice, and learn to use your body again. and it really helps reduce the pain to get your body back into shape. whether it's brutal nerve pain, inflammation, broken bones, unfused bones, metal implants or whatever. laying down 24/7 only makes it worse cuz your muscle will atrophy. I'm not saying this is a cure, or that it will give you a miracle or anything like that, but i am saying it will help, and it definitively helps to deal with the depression of recovery. give it a try if you can move, and give it sometime. you may notice some improvement. work through the pain and stay positive. it takes time, and for some of us who will be in pain forever-this helps reduce those negative effects and bring some peace to your soul. hang in there and good luck and godspeed. and thanks again for this video man. i will keep watching untill I master it, and it makes a difference when you contribute these lessons for free to people who would otherwise, not be able to learn from a dojo, whether it's that they can't afford it, or that they simply can't get up and volunteer at a studio or a dojo. keep up the great work man.

So this was my first time in a few years looking for a tai chi tutorial video. Few years back there wasn't much out there or I wasn't looking correctly. I spent about 45 minutes today looking for one that could teach clear concise and concretely. Yours was it! Not too much stopping to explain or cutting the video after each pose. Your video was nearly perfect! Iv'e never done Tai Chi so it was hard to follow along while you were facing us. It was great that you showed us in real time as you were facing away. My only suggestion is maybe as you're walking us through, you have a student facing you so we see what it looks like and folks don't mirror you ultimately doing it wrong lol. Anyway, thank you for the video and I will be using this one and the following to practice til I can do it on my own in my own back yard. :-)

This form reminds me of when I was training in Taekwondo, and white belts. More specifically, what I was taught when being instructed in how to be a good instructor. "Don't expect perfection from the white belts. They're WHITE BELTS. They're beginners. Just the most basic movements is sufficient to begin with. Then, as they go up through the ranks you refine their technique, and you refine their technique... BLACK BELTS you can expect perfection from." I do something similar when teaching weight lifting techniques - I've got someone who's been working on the deadlift for some time now. First I got her to understand the idea of looking straight ahead (so as to keep the back upright instead of bending over and lifting with the back). Then to thrust forward with the hips as if wearing a strapon. Then she got the hang of grunting and tensing up the abdomenals to form a "muscle corset" as I described it to her. And then to pull BACKWARDS with the shoulders, to further refine her technique... now I'm working with her on the idea of pretending she's wearing spike heels and is driving them through the feet of someone unpleasant. Euphemisms and metaphors to help her grasp the concepts more readily than "focus on contracting the gluteal muscles and hamstrings, which are names you won't remember for muscles you're only starting to learn how to be aware of and using dry technical terms makes me sound intellectually superior to my stupid student, because I'm more interested in being a bully than in actually teaching." We're improving her technique a little bit at a time, as the amount of weight on the bar slowly increases and increases... once she's up to a suitable amount of weight I'll take a bunch of weight off the bar and start teaching her to do cleans. My only complaint regarding this video is that Jake Mace isn't explaining the WHY of things. I'm having to look at other videos showing the applications of the tai chi movements. So far I've had to look at several different videos regarding "white crane spreads wings" to understand that it's about parrying, grabbing, and throwing or striking with power generated from the hips/legs as with a wide hook punch or a ridgehand strike. And additional videos regarding applications of "strum the lute" to understand it's a parry/arm bar or a parry/strike. Now I'm about to look up the applications regarding the stuff at the end, because I've got the general idea (I think), but I want to know the WHY to make sure I've got this right.

Good job Jake. Liked the way you are teaching this for the beginner. I tell people that learning Tai Chi is like learning to write cursive. No two people will have exactly the same cursive. Your "cursive" is quite nice and easy to "read". I've seen some Tai Chi people who I can't "read" at all. Couldn't even tell it was Tai Chi. You have good Tai Chi Penmanship!

👏🏼The amazing thing is practicing Tai Chi is not necessarily do it as if we were Masters, Tai chi is to do slow movement that as long you do it slow and move softly the Meridians in our bodies would be activated, so many people do their horses very low because doing for many years give you flexibility and so many young people who have practice gymnastics can do even lowers horse with great flexibility. If you ask people who don't even speak English in China who received their instruction from their ancestors, they will tell you; as long as you breath and move slow don't even need to do all the movements and can miss some of them and still be ok! Those who correcting this young man have so much pride, anything to serve to share a talent even to charge for it as long as they do it with the good intention is a good deed and benefit the soul.

I think this is pretty good, to be honest, for the beginner, although I would say that you also need to give a quick comment on where the feet are going on each manoeuvre, in tandem with saying - which you do, very clearly - where the hands are going.

im no expert, but i thought Tai Chi was about cultivating qi stores and qi flow. although this form looks physically aesthetic, i can not see the song in the movement to enable correct qi flow? looks like physical form rather than energy form.

O yes and it’s important to mention that your whole body should be in motion from beginning to end. Jegan
