Keeps em cool longer to prevent the brakes heating up too much and losing friction. Probably extreme downhill type gear

@@YeetxBoi a wider pad wouldnt burn out though. You'd need less braking force. Making less heat. On a wider pad and wider disc surface that will dissipate heat faster.

​@@YeetxBoi If you want to keep the rotor temps lower for the same energy dump, increase the mass of the rotors by keeping them solid and not skeletonized (ironically to keep the weight low).

@@runar4993 leverage is pointless when it causes pads to wear quicker than anything. If the pads were bigger they would last a lot longer. I'm burning through pads at the moment from all the 40+mph riding I'm doing now my bikes electric

A huge rotor like this definitely has its use, especially on the rear wheel. Not necessarily for stopping power, but for thermals. I hope they provide adapters for the calipers so I don't have to stack them (;

@@vinceking7878 I use metallic pads in the rear already and they don't heat up much on most of the trails I ride. I could see modulation, or possible lack of, being a possible issue, but on the flip side it'll require less force at the lever

@@Alex-12381 Interesting. I’m only a beginner mtber tbh 🤣. I’ve got shimano mt200 breaks with the stock resin pads, they are surprisingly good tbh; I’ve gone down a mountain with them a few times as well(I don’t weigh much and I’m on and off the breaks, and it wasn’t a long track). They still work fine.

I have an E-MTB with a 1,500W Motor, Magura MT5e Hydraulic Brakes paired with 203mm Rotors front & back and I have never felt that I needed more braking power.. I feel like brakes like these only really make sense for maybe 2000W+ E-Bikes.. I've been a bit skeptical of the Bicycle Industry as of late, I feel like they just keep making something new or different to try and convince people to upgrade or buy another bike when they don't really need to lol..

Might be useful as a drag brake on a loaded tandem in the Alps - if the chainstays clear the rotor.

MT 200s are not that bad (as long as you don't need 1 finger brakes), my XC has these and you can easily balance the bike on the front wheel, modulation and brake power is not that bad

@@dantindley5181 I live in a hilly area. If they get warm (brake rotor yellow to blue, 270 to 300° C) they start to get some fading, but the pads always survived without damage. With this method you can even get rid of squeaking, if you had some contamination on the brake before

Tell me which fork would actually fit a rotor this size since, as far as I know, the biggest rotors you can actually fit on an mtb fork are 223 mm.

@@loganjacobson2335 ah yeah fair enough. As far as I know, the Atherton's ran 240mm rotors on Fox 40s when they were still sponsored by Trickstuff so I presume triple crown forks can deal with bigger rotors since they have a stiffer chassis

The problem with big rotors is they tend to bend more easily which then makes them randomly rub on your disks more frequently

I have made a 280mm one for an in - law's Merida . I made special brackets and the fit is good with no unwanted rubbing .

I had issues with 180mm galfer waves being always out of wack. I can't imagine the pain these are... You get 1$ for every meter they stay true 😂

Finally some one who made a bigger rotor than the 225 mm floater in my Hope Mono6Ti caliper........ thats 19 years old......19. PS. Running the 203mm galfer wave rotors..on heckler ebike.. they stop well but feel like shit....205mm hope floaters coming. Just run HOPE.

Well if you think about it actually makes since having a 246 on 29er vs having a 180 or 203 on a 29er with a 225+ guy which is going stop him faster. I know I'm around 270 and my 203 rotors are really pushing there limits at times.

What’s the point even? Regular sized brakes can lock up a wheel just fine and I doubt they’re getting hot enough to warrant all that extra material being added.

Ebike +200- 250lb rider to stop means 203-250mm rotor. But can regular hubs hold 250mm rotor?

If you want to make the rotor as large as possible then why not just use the wheel rim as a combined rim and rotor. You could even implement some sort of u or v cable routing to clear the tyres.

Circumference is more effective at slowing you down than a bigger caliper, and it's cheaper to swap out a rotor than buy brand new breaks

I have tektro orion 4 pot front, 2 pot rear, i had 185mm front and rear rotors and swapped for 203mm and it made precisely no noticeable difference. Im pretty sure when rotors get this big, its just an ego thing, as if to say "i have bigger rotors than you"

@@dantindley5181 yeah, rotor size only matters for the top dogs. Break cooling and modulation is improved with a bigger rotor, but I presume that's only noticeable at World Cup racer speeds
